We stayed at FA in Cozumel in 2009. We had a great time. It was low key, off season. Never a problem getting beach or pool chairs. Food was delicious and great snorkeling from the Money Bar down to FA. It is not 5 star, but we like a casual atmosphere, no need to dress for dinner!

I stayed there once, before it went AI (used to be an AI optional). It was fine. We like being closer to town though, preferably someplace we can walk to anywhere in town for dinner.

The one thing I really did not like about Fiesta Americana when I stayed there is they do a lot of group business, booking large dive shop groups. There were a few large groups and it was impossible to get a chair at the pool or the manmade beach area in the afternoons. The bar area in the evening was also near the pool, outside, and in an oceanfront room you got all the noise.

I kindda like the place (Marguarite not so much). Have stayed there a couple different yrs. over Carnaval. Seems we always paid about $110 USD/night. I liked being close to Dzulha (Money Bar). Just walk up the road, and drift down. I would wear Rics foot protection for getting over the iron shore, and just strap into my weight belt as I entered the water - exchanging them for fins.
If you go early in the morning, you'll see where the creatures have settled in for the night. Look in the pots for octopi, and coral heads for eels. Sometimes you might see eagle rays cruizing the coast with their entourage.
Wouldn't mind spending a night there this trip, but we've already planned a lot of running around.

We like to do this also, Tom.

Just a bit of advice here. If you are there in the hot months take along some sandals for the walk back to Money Bar. I burned my feet on that asphalt the first time we did this and had to make a run to Mega for that gel stuff to put on burns (it worked great). Just throw your sandals on your wrists while you are snorkeling.

We stayed there about 8 years ago.  We didn't do the AI option but frequently did the breakfast buffet which was good.  Liked being a little out of town but close enough for the cab into and out of town each evening to be quick and inexpensive.  Liked the room (I think all have ocean view), liked the pool area and the snorkeling in front of the hotel was decent and money bar (then dzul ha) close by with great snorkeling.  Our method of getting up to dzul ha was to swim both ways, thereby avoiding the need for shoes.

Sometime in the last few years they switched to being an AI resort, not optional anymore. Considering that other than Money Bar, there really isn't anything else around that you can get to without a car or taking a taxi, just as well to do the AI. Most people did anyway because they always had a promo of some kind with someone (just had to look for it), where they offered AI at just a few bucks more a day than the room rate.
