The last eight years we have gone to Mexico last year was the first I can remember shop keepers in Playa wanting Canadian money,we always travel with US and pesos, but wondered if Akumal is the same if our dollar stays strong.

I assume you're Canadian?
For ease of purchase I find it best to purchase pesos in Canada and bring them along. Have never had a merchant request CAD. Dont exchange your CAD for USD for pesos. You'll lose in the double exchange.

You'll get a good exchange rate at your bank or a currency exchange broker. You can use an ATM in Akumal, however my account was comprised 6 months later so I avoid that now.

That being said, if the loss is only two or three cents per dollar... it's really no biggy. That's only $2.00 on $100, so unless you're spending thousands do what's most convenient for you.

Hi!

I was just down there a couple weeks ago. Go with pesos, everything is cheaper that way. It really is. And I got a great rate right outta the atm's at the banks. Make sure to use the bank atms too, those other ones charge alot to use em.

Cheers!

Doug

SchnauzerDog was right on with all 3 points.

Last summer I had a bit of a misadventure and had to see a doctor in Akumal. When all was said and done (great service and treatment) the doctor asked to be paid in Canadian or pesos. The reason is, that there is a limit to the amount of American dollars that he, or anyone can deposit, to stop drug money laundering.

I deal with TD Canada Trust and just ordered some Pesos through online banking. They where delivered in a couple of days. It was very convenient. They will not take them back, so I will have to exchange whatever I have left back into Canadian while in Mexico.

hey Northern, you don't want to lose more in exchanging pesos back to CDN.

bring 'em home. then you have an excuse to spend thousands more to go back again!

have fun in February and welcome to the forum.

I've always used the ATM @ The Scotia bank and gotten a great rate. I don't even bring any money with me any more other than what I need for my transportation from the airport and a meal maybe.

Last year when we were walking 5th avenue in PDC there were exchange booths where you could exchange both US and CAD into peso. The exchange rate if I remember correctly was around 12 pesos for one CAD. It did vary from exchange booth to exchange booth so just keep walking till you find the rate you want.

That's a good point! Although there are other places who will buy them back (like Kantor who's local to me). I usually hold left over pesos for my next trip or sell them to someone I know that's also going to Mexico (and I usually buy their left over pesos when I'm going back to Akumal )

The banks here have been advising people that there is a crack down on US currency by mexican authorities, as was mentioned above. Take pesos & C$ or use the ATM to obtain more pseos. Most exchange shops deal in many currencies incl C$.
