The Club Maeva was just sitting there decomposing the last time I passed through there in aprox. 07 or 08.What a waste of a beautiful hunk of beach!Has anything been done with it over the last four to five years. If I remember right the "Palace" hotel chain had bought it and then ran out of money or something before they could rebuild.Very curious. If a resort is ever rebuilt on that sight I(and I'm sure many others)would be back there in a heartbeat.

What a shame. My very 1st trip to the QROO was a 10 night stay on this very beach though at a different location down the beach from here. I do recall walking with my wife to this place just to look it iver for a possible future trip though the Hurricanes took care of that idea. Hope this area can one day be rebuilt into a nice place again. XPU HA beach is a fantastic beach area.

This is so weird to see this here today. I hadn't seen it, but had been thinking about it because my wasband and I stayed there when it was Robinson Club Tulum. I was trying to find it on Google earth, but couldn't remember exactly where it was. I ended up finding the article that CC posted the link to.

Somewhere I have photos too. We didn't care for it back then...changed rooms 3 times in the week we were there, and English speaking guests were a definite minority. (I think we were there in '98 or '99. Can't remember exactly.

Thanks for the article, Chicago Craig. Remember driving past the old Robinson Club on our first trip to Cancun (ugh) and Akumal in I think 1999. At that time, there were not a lot of AIs (my how things change) other than this, Oasis, probably ABR, Club Med in Cancun and likely a few others.

Our stays at Maeva was awesome....pretty close to being like ABR but the restaurant and bar area in the main building was much nicer....there was a small beach restaurant along with the outside pizza oven that made killer pizza....but you had better get there on time......

Met lots of great travelers while we stayed at Maeva......sure miss it....what a grand lady...

Thank you so much for the update and pics. This was absolutely our favorite resort - especially when it was Robinsons and run by Germans. The food was the best ever - 22 kinds of bread for lunch. Snorkeling was excellent - I saw my first turtle here - the rooms were beautiful the beach was and still is gorgeous and uncrowded. There were very few english speaking people here but the staff sat us with other Americans and Canadians and we stuck together and had the best time. Club Maeva was still good but the prices went up and the food was not as good. Interesting to hear about the cenote under the resort - glad we didn't collapse the roof! We visit the ruins every year and reminisce. I think they should remove the buildings and let it go back to nature.

Thanks for the article, I love the pictures.

It's kinda creepy to see places that have been abandoned. I wonder what it would take to renovate it? Before too long the jungle and all its inhabitants are going to take over.

When we were at the CRT 4 years ago we walked down there to have a look. Wish we could have wandered thru the empty buildings but there was a guard sitting in a building by the beach.

It really is a shame that Palace couldn't do anything with the property. I'm all for protecting centotes, but the resort had already been there for quite some time, so why not allow it now? Maybe some agreement where they have to work within the existing footprint of structures, no adding new buildings?

We stayed at this resort when it was Robinson Club and to this day we still talk about the food at that resort. I think, it was three days before I found guest that spoke English. I did not realize that I could ask to be seated with English speaking people for dinner. (The seating at Robinson Club was like a cruise ship with eight people to most talbes.) Even with the staff, German was the first language, Spanish was the second language and if you spoke English to any staff, they would go get someone else to answer you. I think about that with fond memories because I loved it at Robinson Club.

We were booked to go to an AI in Playcar. The AI in Playacar was much cheaper than Robinson Club. Hurricane Roxanne hit the area and the AI in Playcar was not going to be open in time for our vacation. Apple Vacations called us to tell us this and we were given the choice of our money back or staying our ten days at Robinson Club. I couldn't believe that the relocation because of Roxanne would be at such a higher priced resort than the one we had booked.

The "before" pictures in the above post brought back a lot of memories. The "after" pictures made me sad.

Surprised as large an organization as the Palace resorts are that they haven't been able to negotiate with $$$$.

When staying at the CRT I walked down and snorkeled by the abandoned pier. A gigantinc ball of fish was there along with a baracuda. Very unique snorkeling experience. There must have been thousands of fish in the ball. The resort was really eerie to walk around, no guard at that time.

Palace owned the resort on the far north of this beach also....it was destroyed by the same two hurricanes and they had a massive dispute with the landowner that was in court for years...they lost and we only allowed to rebuild on a small portion of the property with no beach. They purchased the Maeva hoping to have access to the Xpu ha beach again...this beach was used as a destination for all their other sorts (none of which have good beaches). Now they are right back in litigation....trying to rebuild. I guess the land is virtually worthless if it not able to be developed. I was really looking forward to seeing what they were going to do there. Palace really is a good organization and all their resorts are beautiful and well run...with excellent food and service. Such a shame.
