We spent 10 days in Merida and 7 days in PM. We ate out more on this trip than usual, especially in Merida. The food there is outstanding! The cost of meals in Merida is much less than in the Roo. The food carts are plentiful in Merida. If and when you visit, you have to try the deep fried hot dog stars and papas.....Tony says " was a tasty snack." LOL

I've always thought the the people who do not eat "street food" in Mexico are missing half of the real experience.

Saw the hotdog cart in Merida. I remember getting one of those before game one of the White Sox World Series game in Merida during Wilma. Best damn dog I've ever had. Great slide show and selection of musica

Shanener, Merida is about a 4 hour drive West from Playa del Carmen. Check out, Merida . What a city . On this forum. Tony

Have to get there one of these trips (been to Uxmal and Campeche, but not Merida unless you count the time my late husband took a wrong turn on the way to Uxmal and we spent 45 minutes driving through working class area of Merida - tire shops, laundries, etc. before he admitted he made a wrong turn

). Looks really nice though. Just so hard to tear myself away from the beach.

The food carts are great when you look for the ones frequented by the locals... can't go wrong when you eat as the locals do!

I love the food in Mexico! Most of it's gluten free, and it's FRESH! What a concept...

I talked to my 83 year old, great aunt a few weeks back. She asked what I had been up to, and I reluctantly told her about my 3 weeks in Mexico. She was thrilled, lit up like a Christmas tree, talking about Mexico and the food.

I guess, back in the 70's, she and my uncle used to go all the time. She said, "our friends and family thought we were crazy, that is was too dangerous." Haha, that sounds familiar.

She raved about the food, and talked about the little community where they used to go, and help plant fruit trees. It was volunteer work, and they became very close to several of the families over the years. She talked about the food carts, and I told her that it hadn't changed. Then she said that they were eating soup, and she asked what was in it, and they told her sea turtle. I said, "OH, THAT has changed!" Nobody would be eating sea turtle soup these days, at least not that they would admit to anyone.

I could eat the food down there, every day, for the rest of my life. It's odd that my first husband was from Mexico, and I never appreciated the food, or culture back then. I think it bugs him a little that now, it's such a huge part of my life.
