heading back to the Akumal area for my 5th trip. Looking to get some decent underwater pictures. I was using an Olympus stylus 1030sw but find I cant get a clear non-blue green picture. would like something that is capable of 40 foot depths. also budget would be 500.00 or less. Any suggestions would be appreciated

haven't stayed at the same place twice. So many great resorts to choose from. This time is gran Bahia principe Tulum. Due to the great price but not keen on the dolphin exhibit. Heading down Feb 22-March 1st with the new girlfriend

At snorkeling depths, the clarity of the water has a lot to do with it. Photos you see posted online from most shallow water snorkeling that are clear, they've been touched up and processed through one of many photo programs. If the water you're in has a green tinge or is murky, you aren't going to get clear water in your photo. The Olympus you have is a decent waterproof camera. It's going to be on par photo quality wise with any of the waterproofs currently out there in it's price range. If you haven't done so already, put some time in and check out the various photo editor software out there, both the free online stuff and programs you can buy and load onto your computer. Play around with editing some old photos and see if that can get you closer to the results you're looking for. I would exhaust that option before buying a new camera. I really don't think the camera is going to make much difference based on what you have now.

Excellent copy & paste, Mags! bryan, biggest things are you need to get as close as you can to whatever you're shooting. I don't think that camera has manual settings, does it? It thought it's strictly a point & shoot. What settings you'll want/need to get the best results are going to vary each time out. It depends on water clarity, natural sunlight, reflections, how deep whatever you're trying to shoot is, etc. Play around with all the settings the camera offers, write down what modes/scenes or settings you used so when you looks at your pictures you'll know what worked best. I dive more than I snorkel. I use an SLR and also a high end p&s that does allow for full manual settings too. Even after years, I still have a notebook of the dive conditions and settings I used. After awhile you get used to know what you need to do with your specific camera in specific conditions to get the results you're after. One thing with the point & shoot cams that have an "underwater" mode, if you're on the surface or in very shallow water, on a sunny day you can end up with red hued photos. The filter is meant to compensate for the water color, but at the surface of at very shallow depths (like most Akumal snorkel will be), you don't usually need the filter. If you have time before your trip, play around with a couple photo editing programs and see if you can easily clean up some past shots you weren't happy with as far as the murky/green water.
