PREQUEL Sooo – 9 days prior I got my very first case of Shingles. 3 days prior Tomas got really, really, really sick with food poisoning. Here are my lovely shingles: As you can see they bisect my forehead, go up into my scalp, are on the side of my forehead, and even in my eyebrow. This made grooming a bit of a challenge! Luckily we had packed the weekend before. This is all I need for one week: Here is what Tomas takes: [image]http//lh6.googleusercontent.com/-FOtC87h829E/UM9_mupIAYI/AAAAAAAABAU/zUAPk1NUh2A/s640/DSCF2399.JPG[/image] I did not take any pictures of Tomas getting sick, but just picture him lying in bed groaning, tinted a vibrant shade of green, interrupted only by hours toiling in the bano for 3 straight days. And that was after going to the doctor and getting on medications. I can honestly tell you he barely made it onto the plane and The day before we left was the 1st day he ate anything except sips of soup and Sprite. The day prior to leaving was Tomas’s 1st day out of bed. So of course as tradition dictates we had lunch out at a favorite Mexican restaurant: At this point we were still talking about whether to cancel or not. Here is Tomas’s lovely lunch. He ate almost 3 whole bites! I, of course, crammed mine in because I was so stressed! Here is Tomas “manning up” and trying to pretend he didn’t feel like pile of steaming dog poo: We even managed to walk the pooches before taking them to “summer camp” at the vet: We did make it though so here we go: Destination: Akumal-November 15-22, 2012 Dia Uno Our trip starts out well. We are on the road early and traffic is what we call “light” in North Texas. After a short time in line for security where we proudly assumed the position every time they asked we put our clothes back on headed for some breakfast. Breakfast is at Einstein’s and consists of water, a latte, & 2 bagel thin & egg white & turkey sausage sammiches for $21: For 200 calories this is actually a really good deal. Here is a close up. I am just whetting your appetite for the real food porn to come: The plane is here: Don’t we look like we were never sick? Our flight leaves early even though we were flying American Airlines. We paid extra for the exit row and it was worth the $33: The flight is smooth and we land a bit early in Cancun. No flight attendants or passengers had any major meltdowns. A minor miracle these days ;) Thirty-seven point five minutes after touching down we are out front to meet Luis, our USA Transfer representative: Luis turns us over to our driver, Victor, but only after we grab two margaritas to go: Soon we are sailing down the 307: Thanks to Mr. Badger (awesome directions y’all. Don’t take the PM overpass!) we stop at Salchicha in Puerto Morelos to grab a couple sausage baguettes for the road: Tomas’s stomach is ready for some great food after three days of food poisoning that did not completely go away until he had that airport margarita ordered while listening to a favorite Buffett tune “Fins”. Here is the menu: (86 pesos for two baguettes and three waters). We arrive at Condos Playa Caribe about an hour and ten minutes later: Super easy check in to unit No. 12 thanks to their wonderful staff. They had tons of great art, but this was our favorite: The beautiful view from the deck: View of the pool from our deck: Master bedroom: The kids room (ok, we didn’t have any kids with us but just in case Tomas got on my nerves…..) One of the bathrooms: Main room: The safe is easy to figure out: Kitchen: After we check in with Agustin we are off to Midway Foods across the road for supplies. We were lucky Alfredo was handy & hauled our heavy bags up to the fourth floor. It was well worth the ten bucks Tomas tipped him! The same staff is here from when we stayed in No. 11 four years ago & they are just flat fantastic. Patricia is our maid and she arrives with a huge fruit basket including chips and coffee: So now it is cocktail hour & unpacking time. Our favorite kind of multi-tasking! The WiFi was quick and easy to set up and we are ready to rock: Of course crunch unpacks in about 30 seconds flat so she can engage in her favorite activity of sitting on the balcony sipping a cocktail: Dinner will be at La Buena Vida tonight, a five minute stagger down the beach or road: As usual, LBV rocks. Strangely, chips and pico de gallo were not brought to the table as usual. All the other folks had chips so of course it was our right to have chips although the bread they served was very good. I attribute the 20 minute delay on chip delivery to the possible fact that maybe our waiter may have worked at Lol Ha & was trained “that” way ;). We love Lol Ha but their dinner service is not always the best. Our dinner tonight is grilled grouper: Chicken fajitas: Crunch enthusiastically slurped her 1st of many grilled fish con ajo fillets of the trip: 2 entrees & 4 margaritas for the great price of $37 US plus the tip (we tip 20%): Regular viewers of this trip report may be SHOCKED by the greatly reduced Ceviche consumption. This was caused by Tomas’s diagnosis of Gout. He had no foot problems this trip and we attribute that to his scaling back on the seafood. We amble back under the stars to the condo for a fantastic night’s sleep on a very comfortable bed, great linens and awesome pillows. Dia Dos We are up bright & early this day & every day. I think the latest we ever slept in was about 6:00 am. Chef Tomas prepared himself scrambled egg tortillas: He fried 2 eggs in Pam for Crunch: With slight variations this was our every day breakfast routine. It is so nice to just chill with morning coffee & I don’t know a single restaurant that has a better view than this: The only thing that would make it more perfect is if they delivered watermelon slices at our door! The electric cook top here is easy to figure out & use. Our mission this morning is to rent a golf cart from Mexicarte. Sometimes they are all rented out & you have to wait so we shall soon see. It is a really pleasant walk into town on a November morning: Golf cart rental goes well and we are on the road in No. 6, a fine vehicle with good torque. Marcelo is still there & gives us a receipt for our 500 peso damage deposit: These carts are electric. If you rent for more than a day or 2 don’t forget the extension cord & charger! After a stop at Super Chomak for food for future breakfasts we are back at PC12 to pack up to go snorkeling. Turdle has graced us with her presence (people have to hike 4 steep flights of stairs to see us so we are very honored!) & then we are off to a very crowded but nice Akumal Bay: Our first snorkel is nothing short of spectacular. We only see one sea turtle (a green) but also a huge southern ray and two fish (LOL): After a to-go margarita on our spot on the beach we are off to Lol Ha for lunch: Awesome it is, grilled Grouper for Crunch: Maya pork tacos for Tomas: And 2 margaritas each (4)for 695 pesos plus tip: We would have paid that just for the incredibly enjoyable day tripper show! Any time we go to Lol Ha & Tomas hits the bano he comes back with another version of this to add to the 30 gazillion we already have: Have snorkel gear will travel: After lunch we are back at Half Moon Bay for some great chill time with Hallin’, Turdle and perros, Lucy and Jackson. Chillin: Dudes & Beagles (these are a few of crunch’s favorite things!): Amigas & Beagles (more of crunch’s favorite things ): And her majesty, the one & only, the diva of all Beagles……… drum roll: Beach Beagle! (line up if you want autographs ;) Tonight’s plan is a mystery. Florida Girl and her esposo will be here and who knows what trouble they will cause tonight! After a few cocktails on the balcony we are off to Cueva Del Pescador for a wonderful dinner with good friends: Some of us set a very bad example: And the less mature of us join in: Of course it was all Tomas’s idea! Seafood medley for two (600 pesos) for crunch y Toams: Seafood medley for one (it was huge) for Florida Girl: Ok, it hadn’t actually been delivered to FG yet. A plate-dwarfing huge steak for Poppy: numerous margaritas, beers & waters for 1460 pesos: [Great dinner with great friends at one of the best & one of our absolute favorite restaurants in Akumal. Dia Tres Tomas was out of bed before the sun this morning. Ooooh: Aaaah: This morning we started the day bright & early with a 7 AM long morning snorkel out in Half Moon Bay. Crunch saw Turdle ;) Our entry point is in front of La Mirage condos & is pretty easy and relatively rock free in this area. A snorkel vest is handy here to keep you away from harming the coral. Some random shots: Really love the purple: And these studly dudes: Back to the condo to shower and have a nice breakfast of fried eggs & fried egg tortillas, Tomas’s new invention, patent pending. Totally random shot of man & coconut. Just because we can! This morning we are going on the road with Florida Girl & her esposo. We have no idea where this adventure will take us but one goal is to have lunch at Chamico’s. This is always a goal of ours! Our friends are supposed to arrive around 9 AM. Tomas expects them to be right on time around ten ;). It’s Mexico. What does time matter anyway? The day could not have been more perfect. Though we did not make it to Chamico’s (the annual triathalon was in full swing & traffic on 307 was pretty bad). Xpu-Ha was every bit as beautiful as I have heard on LG & we will be back: We did not think the snorkeling was good here so we did not bring the gear. Were we ever wrong! Again! We walked out on Xpu-Ha Beach Club & saw that little reef out there. It was too much to resist. So for $10 each we rented the snorkel gear and headed out: It was great. Not too many fish, did not see any turtles, but the amount of coral was incredible: The happy campers: From what we could hear & see over at Catalonia Royal Tulum Tomas says there is absolutely no way we would ever consider staying there. The beach was the size of an elementary school basketball court and there were 1,004,000 humans out there having “fun”. The “BIG LOUD SPORTS GUY VOICE” in Spanish was loud and clear & you could hear the “Mexi-Hip-Hop” even under water at this safe distance. We like a little space, thank you. However, upon further contemplation of that beautiful beach Crunch thinks she could probably find a way to survive a stay at CRT: Tomas thinks for a first-timer to Mexico, AI lover, and for the younger folks it is great, though. It’s just not our deal anymore. He does remember staring out at the pool at Playa Caribe back in 2005 & stating that he could never stay here in Akumal. It’s just too “quiet”. Well, people change. Crunch just rolls her eyes as usual and let’s time teach Tomas to “never say never”. FG went out and tickled the fish: [image]http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w7Ndd2DSj5Y/UNB-cXN9b1I/AAAAAAAABLA/9YRztkAokgI/s640/DSCF2601.JPG[image] Why would you name this boat this? Lunch was great & the service there was really good. I guess you know who had this (no fish is safe!) Esposa de FG (he was very bashful or is it witness protection?): More great tacos for FG: Tomas’s mixto fajitas: Margaritas, waters, grilled grouper & fijitas mixto for 1,015 pesos, plus tip: More chilling on the beach after lunch & then we are back at PC12 to shower, cocktail, & think about where to go for dinner. The hardest decision we have had to make all day! We’ll be in the golf cart tonight. Anything is possible. Condo note. This condo has reverse osmosis but we got a little nervous about drinking the water anyway. Tomas talked to Agustin about it & Augustin whistled a command to Alfredo. Less than five minutes later Luis had the 20L bottle of water up to our room on the fourth floor: Incredible service. Seriously, why did it take four years for us to stay here at PC again? After imbiding some brain lubricating Canadian Mist & Coke Lite’s we decided it would just be stupid not to have dinner on the beach. Another great dinner at Lol Ha: Fabulous service from Armundo who is a great waiter even though it is only his 2nd night there. He was always there every time we had lunch too. Truly a nice guy & great waiter. We started with garlic bread: Chicken parmesan for Tomas: Bacon wrapped shrimp for Crunch: Don’t even bother hoping for any left over bacon wrapped shrimp from crunch! Ooops, did you blink? All gone! 4 margaritas (20 peso upcharge each for 1800) and a couple bottles of water for $69 US plus the tip: Of course we had to stop by & visit Tomas’s pal: Dia Cuatro Once again the only thing on Dish Network at 6:00 am is Imus so we quickly shut the TV down & head out into Half Moon Bay for another early morning snorkel, which is great once again but we did not see any turtles today. Tomas brought tip money & everything but no luck. We did see this: And this: A little bit of that: And some more of this: Our Floridian amigos will be here soon and who knows what mysteries the day holds for us? We end up at Akumal Bay for some fantastic morning snorkeling. So many turtles we just got tired of saying “excuse me sir, but could you puhleeeze get out of my frigging way?” ;) The fish were a real pain in the behind too ;): And then there are those pesky tourons: Lucky Tomas gets special delivery: Lunch at Lol Ha was great as usual. Tomas was a little distracted by the Cowboys VS Browns game but the ‘Boys won anyway without his help. Cheeseburger: And other assorted yummy stuff: Those post snorkel Lol Ha margs will really sneak up on you! Pretty sure we payed our bill ;) ……holy carp those Lol Ha margs are not only strong but taste very good. After lunch we sent esposo de FG out on his SCUBA mission whilst we chilled on the beach & watered up: We conversed with Steve from Fallon, NV and his girl Karen from PDC: Get a room : We met some great LG folks today, most of whom we had never met before & some we had. We talked with SoSo, chatted with Steve & ‘Roonie, finally met Fins Up, and OMG Tomas met his online sparing partner Seagoat. Here is what he had to say after: “Seagoat you truly rock. DO NOT change, you wild Canadian!” Poppy finally made it back from his dive to find us all sobered up again: We left the beach a lot later than usual. It was five PM and they were starting to bring in the turtles and sand for the night. We had a little surprise when we returned to the condo. For some reason our coffee maker was replaced with a nice new Hamilton Beach Brew Station coffee maker: It tookTomas a drink or so to figure the thing out but it looks like a pretty cool device. The proof will be if the only coffee-drinking customer Crunch will be happy in the morning. Dinner. La Lunita? Should we suffer through another on the beach & toes in the sand experience? The current menu at La Lunita is, well, interesting. Not in the mood for duck we end up having stuffed spinach chicken for Tomas: Grilled grouper for Crunch: With 2 margaritas it was $42 US plus tip. We usually only go here once per trip. This is a nice & romantic place for dinner but a Mexican restaurant that does not serve chips & pico de gallo needs to work on that policy a bit. No chips & Guac in mexico? Who knows how it may make you feel: The bano is still great: Desert tonight is Magnum Bars from Midway Foods & under the stars(our 1st ice cream all trip – oh no!). Eat ‘em fast before the humidity melts the chocolate away. Dia Cinco This morning it is very foggy and a bit chilly. Instead of our morning snorkel we head down to Loncheria Akumalita for breakfast: The breakfast menu: Egg and sausage omelet with toast & OJ for Tomas: French toast for Crunch: Good stuff for 140 pesos plus tip & a favorite place too. After a stop at El Pueblito market we are back at the condo to await the arrival of our Floridians. What adventures will today bring? Rocking her beautiful casa: If you want to go for a nice relaxing dip or maybe swim some laps to work off all the good food you can just borrow the neighbors pool: We start the day out with a nice snorkel off Xcacel Beach. This is an amazing beach. Probably the best we have seen in years. Bring your own shade though! The Lizards here are many & huge: Is that a beautiful beach or what? Great snorkeling and we saw a huge barracuda, the first time we’ve seen one this trip: Mask face!: Lunch is at Chamico’s. Look at this view: This is the “indoor” restaurant: There is no menu, but the nice gentleman or his family will let you know what they are offering that day. We started with margarita’s (of course ) Tomas helped direct traffic to the parking lot: We checked out the kitchen appliances: I wonder if they take this boat to get the fish? Cutie and Patootie ;) Frick and frack: Pause for a refill of that margarita: Then the boss man made us all do some grueling physical exercise before lunch. The 3 of us did high rep margarita lifts while boss man showed us all how it should be done: We all shared the best ceviche in the world: Followed by this terrifyingly delicious fish: After those lovely margaritas you will need to make a stop at the unisex bano. It may look & is rustic, but it was astonishingly clean & even had nice TP! It is just as great as it was for our first time two years ago. The four of us had 9 margaritas, several waters, ceviche & whole red snapper for 970 pesos plus the tip. You don’t really have any idea what it will cost until you get the bill so bring plenty of cash & a relaxed attitude. It is a bargain at an price! After viewing a 1:02 Youtube video Tomas is able to successfully peel and cut up the pineapple that was part of the fruit basket left for us by the condo management: He still has all ten fingers and we deem the project a success! Dinner tonight hmmmmmmm. Where will our golf cart take us? Cueva Del Pescador! Once again Cueva rocks. Service, menu selection and value are all there. We think it was locals night, but they let us in anyway. What a great way to celebrate Monday: Shrimp pasta for crunch: Arrechera beef for Tomas: With 4 Malibu/Coke Lites, the bill was $40, a serious bargain for this area Jose, our no-English night security guy at the condo, helps us by unwrapping the extension cord and plugging it into the outlet when we get back from dinner. The outlet is behind the fence at the condo office and requires leaning over some nasty-smelling garbage cans. Tomas can always hear something alive down there by his feet. Racoon? Opossum? I don’t know, but it has not growled at him. Yet. Through a series of hand gestures I understand that Jose would like the permission to unplug our cart in the morning so we will be ready to rock. The guy is truly amazing and we give him another tip. Dia Seis The plan for this morning is to hop in our golf cart and attack Yal Ku lagoon at 8 AM before the tour groups arrive. As it turns out Yal Ku does not open until 9 AM: We kill the time by driving around the area looking at all the new homes being built. One new condo building advertises a 153 square foot condo starting at $91,000 US. That seems a bit cramped for us. On the bright side at least you could vacuum a condo that size with a small dust buster. Yal Ku does not disappoint: We pay the $10 US per person entry fee: They have brand spanking new lockers: We spend about 90 minutes covering the whole inlet: Above water too: Cannot get enough of these guys and they were everywhere! Ok, enough already! May as well go skating: Hide and seek! 1 more and that is it! No, really….. Seriously, this is the last one: Yikes! Were we ready for land after all that. Lots of fish & a fun time here except the huge area of brown water that you could not see through. Not halcyon for sure. We did not like it! Next we are off to the beach in Akumal Bay. Security was extremely tight today: Chillaxing: We thought this family was really neat: A friend dropped by: LG sighting! Can you name the LGers? After some more chilling on the beach we are back at Lol Ha for lunch: Salud: The entertainment: Crunch’s usual por favor: I love fish too! Tomas wants his usual too: Tomas created a new entrée soon to be featured on the Lol ha “fine dining” menu: Great lunch. Great people watching. 4 margaritas, grilled grouper (yes, again) chicken and beef fajitas for $56 US plus the tip. Armundo is our waiter again. He’s pretty cute and I think my wife is plotting something, but hey what do I know? Tomas is really relaxed: After some brief chill time under the watchful eyes of the webcam we are back at it. 1st we had to admire the art work (little boys are all the same): These fellows seemed to be employed keeping the steps from flying away: One last snorkel for the day and boy howdy it is a fantastic snorkel. The younger green turtles were out today in full force. There were fish: More fish: Guess what? Wife fish: Ray dropped by: Purdy: Oh yeah, Turtles! Dog fish (cute!) We arrive back at the condo to shower up and it starts raining. I guess it really was time to leave the beach. It is now cocktail time and our Floridian amigos will arrive later for tonight’s dinner adventure. It should be interesting to say the least. They are heading for Belize in the morning and we will miss them because they have been very entertaining. After a few minutes of discussion the decision is made to go to Tequilaville for dinner. Our driver takes us over 307 to the pueblo for a great dinner at a great price. After swearing he would NEVER, EVER go there again after a crummy experience in their earlier days Tomas relented & returned to Tequilaville: He tried his usual jokes about Canadians and Ken and Mary seem to enjoy them (probably for the 7 millionth time!). Our last visit two years ago to this place did not go smoothly so the moral to this story is to always give a second chance. We had a great time. They were nice enough to lend crunch reading glasses that matched her dress (what a nerd!): I guess they deserve each other (book end nerds!) Couple of nerds: [/image]http://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-EGwA3VcqRHw/UNCuzEoQ3RI/AAAAAAAABd4/Uyiht22rhEg/s640/DSCF2867.JPG[/image] Our more beautiful and normal pals: Crunch had coconut shrimp & thought it was FABULOUS! Both of the guys had this: Then FG had dessert: Tomas gave it the fork of approval: Everyone enjoyed Tequilaville: A bunch of margaritas, two orders of steak fajitas (at 110 pesos each, a great price), coconut shrimp and a cheeseburger with fries for just less than 800 pesos plus the tip. Dia Siete Our day begins early again. We are up at sunrise. One thing we do like about the groups staying in the condo building right now is the fact that we all seem to be early risers and nobody makes any noise at night. It helps that this building in particular was built with privacy in mind and is well insulated between the different units. After our fried egg breakfast it is time to check the Internet. Nothing. Internet service went down yesterday and is still down this morning. I will ask about it today but only because I want to make sure they know there is a problem, not because we really need it. Some of these folks here need to check in with the world and they will not be happy if they are unable to do that. After all, it is part of the room package here. Today we will reluctantly turn in our golf cart. It has been a fine way to get around and it (No. 6) has lots of torque compared to some of the weaker carts. The day will start early on Akumal Bay and we will maximize our last full day here in paradise. This is our seventh stay in Akumal since about 2005 and I must say this is the absolute best trip we have ever had. Maybe it just keeps getting better? I don’t know. This trip just seems to be over the top as far as having a great time. Off to Akumal Bay. Snorkeling is great again and see a few turtles as usual. Tomas found an oar by the cannons & gave it to the lifeguard. No charge! How cool is this: The Lol Ha beach delivery service rocks: Those margaritas will put you in the zone: And cause you to really, love your spouse ;) After two beach margaritas from Lol Ha it is time for lunch. Oh goody, our favorite table & here comes our favorite waiter! Do not even think about sitting here! There guacamole was excellent: Guess who had this? And who had the Lol Ha burger? We milk out our last Lol Ha lunch for all it’s worth. 4 margaritas, guac with chips, grilled grouper and the Lol Ha hamburger for 770 pesos plus the tip. After lunch we contemplate the universe: Water up: And then we snorkel out from the web cam location and make way down the beach, getting out of the water at ABR’s Moonrise Bar and walking back. Lots more turtles were seen. Whatever! Really nice hair. Beach note: Europeans are so interesting. They are all good with getting to the beach and changing into their swim suits right there. We don’t mind the occasional scrotum view or breast shot but I have to wonder that if they are fine with no clothes on a packed beach then why even wear clothes at all when going into the ocean? Just an observation. Not a judgment. Well, back to the condo for us. Tomorrow is departure day and USA Transfers will be here bright and early at 0900. Packing for the trip home takes about ten minutes. The lovely Ms. Turdle stops by. They are back from Tulum and we’ll have dinner with them tonight at LBV, but only if they bring those cute little beach beagles along with them. It is incredibly brave of them to put up with us & our horrible last day stench: We meet our beach beagle people: and settle down at a nice beach front table. The well-trained Lucy is right at home in her own chair while Jackson stays in the sand: The Malibu/Coke Lights are going down smoothly and the dinner was awesome, with awesome people. Shrimp pasta for crunch: Fajitas for Turdle & Halnass: Fajitas for Tomas: Gorgeous! Getting all the Beagle love I can: Oh, and since we are with Turdle we get to have dessert! For our part it was 545 pesos plus the tip for four Malibu/Coke Lights, Pasta Laya and beef fajitas. We hate to say goodnight: Reluctantly we say our good byes and shamefully trudge back to the condo. But, “last day stink” does not seem to be present on this particular trip. I wonder if it is because this trip went absolutely perfect. A rarity for us. Usually there is a “Tomas-related” event but this trip is OK. Finale Buenas dias sunshine: USA transfers shows up and off we go. We got a confirmation email from Brandt so all should go well for the trip back. Frozen pizza and the Cowboys/Redskins game await us when we arrive back at the house. Wilbert from USA Transfers shows up 8 minutes early and we are on the road. From the condo to the airport was one hour and ten minutes. Check in goes smoothly and we have chicken sandwiches and a Coke at Bubba Gumps for a whopping airport price of 375 pesos plus the tip which is about $32 US according to their exchange rate. Our final no healthy eating rules meal is at the wildly over-proced Bubba Gumps: I look manic, but it is just that I am excited to see our pooches again! We had thePollo burger with bacon. Push it to the limits baby! The flight to Dallas/Fort Worth goes smoothly. We had the emergency row to ourselves: We land a bit early and then a new record is made. The place is empty and we are out to the car only 15 minutes after landing. We have never seen Immigration as empty as we saw today. We are home in time to watch the Cowboys lose badly to the Redskins. Back to life as usual: This was a great trip. Another sand jar for the collection: Tomorrow morning it will get even better when we pick up our precious little fur beasts from the kennel. We know they will be very happy also. And here they are doing what they do best:
