Are you noticing it? Are places full? We won't be there, but just curious.

I couldn't go this year, but most December's I'm in Cozumel and/or Akumal up to the 23rd or 24th. The Christmas crowds start building up around the 20th-21st. I don't think the Mayan calendar ending on the 21st is going to be any noticeable difference with the number of people. It'll be the typical Christmas week level.

We live down here and have not noticed anything too far out of the ordinary. We interact with Mayans frequently and have been told that it is not the 21st. but the 24th and NONE of them believe the prophecy. Many aren't even aware of all the hub-bub. It is widely thought that this is just another way for the Americans and Europeans to profit.

We had heard that it was really busy there. But the source we heard it from it seemed unreliable. Sometimes I think they say it is to create attention so they can increase prices.

It's super busy! The airport was utter chaos! No organization at all! I thought fights were gonna break out! On the drive down to the resort, several military areas were set up to be on the lookout for drugs? Maybe. After seeing that, Kirk said no way to taking collectivos anywhere, LOL! Today is our first full day here! Probably just hit the beach here at the GBP and explore a bit. Tomorrow is Xelha day!

Suz and Kirk-
The military presence is normal there. From Cancun to Akumal you will or would have passed probably three or 4. You just slow down at the topes they may or may not look at you and on you go. Normal. Hope you have a great time.

We stopped by to meet Alma at iTours in mid-December. She was unable to show us a room because they were all rented out and she said they have been busy for some time - more than usual at that time of year.

iTour is busier than usual since they went with a new booking agent at the start of the year. I wa talking with them about it in Feb.They are usually booked up a couple of months in advance now . It used to be you could almost always get a "walkup" room but not so anymore.

As far as Chichen Itza, they said it was busier than usual but not as busy as it is for Solistice. We've been for Solstice and it was kinda nuts in the afternoon. Everything was going great until it got cloudy and started raining about 30 minutes before the whole serpent was visible. We'll try it again soon.
