Greetings! We stayed in PDC last February and fell in love with the snorkeling experience. We're going back again in late Feb but this time we're in Cancun at The Royal. For the past year I've had the Akumal beach webcam nearly permanently parked on one of my monitors with the plan of spending a full day on that beach if we were able to return. Now though, being in Cancun, the trip to Akumal would be much longer, taking valuable time away from the water. We're only there for 3-1/2 days and only one day is a completely "free" day (company trip). My question is this: Is there a similar snorkeling area to Akumal bay nearer to Cancun? Akumal Bay looks like a swimming pool in that there are hardly any waves and we find that very appealing. Thanks for your suggestions and ideas!

Welcome to the forum Bruce! Check out Porto Morales. It's less than 30 minutes form Cancun. The reef is a federal marine park. You have to pay to have someone take you out but from what I've heard, it is GREAT! Plus there's a nice little town to explore.

Thanks Frank. I've read some about PM but I don't think that's our solution. We want to be able to enter/exit the water at will and without a guide. Last year we enjoyed a guided trip that included Yal-Ku but the group was ready to move on to a cenote long before we were ready to leave Yal Ku. (I could have spent all day wandering around in that water) I had intended to take a small group of snorkeling enthusiasts in our clan to catch a collectivo from PDC to Akumal and enjoy a full day of perfection. I just concerned now that the extended travel time will put a damper on the experience. To be clear, no guides, calm waters, lots of fish and underwater items of interest, tortugas wold be nice, available food and drink is a pretty high priority too. Thanks!

If you do Akumal, try my tour Rent a car or taxi and get to Akumal By the white arches, rent a golf cart for 4 hrs ($20) get directions and head to Yal-Ku lagoon for snorkelling $10us (in the morning between 830 - 11 am ) Motor back to La Bueuna Vida (LBV ) for lunch / refreshments - walk the beach - snorkel in Half Moon Bay if calm - see all the coatis come out by LBV - check out the condos for your next stay head back to Akumal for more snorkeling / food / refreshments - hire a snorkel guide from the dive shop if you want to find the best with limited time

There's some pretty good snorkeling at Punta Nizuc at a beach occupied by Club Med and The Westin hotel. The area is smaller than Akumal bay but gets deeper and I've seen some large French angelfish in the coral "canyons.". I believe some hotels organize boats for snorkeling trips. Entry is rocky and you definitely need water shoes. But there were lots of fish in 2000 and I saw my one and only octopus, as swell as squid, rays, barracudas and the usual suspects. I spent two weeks just snorkeling and loved every moment. Perhaps the Westin and even Club Med will give day passes.

Short answer ...no. Puerto Morales doesn't compare. As a matter of fact ...I love Akumal Bay ...I do not like PM. Sundog was right on the money ...a perfect plan for a day trip out of Cancun.

We have also done Isla, Cozumel and Roatan Only Roatan offers good to excellent shore snorkeling, slightly better than Akumal - but their sand gets hot and few turtles

It's also a lot 'deeper' to the coral to see critters Nope, when we were at PM, the boats took us to spots in 6-10 feet of water

Easier to access from Cancun is Isla Mujeres. Wear your bathingsuit under your clothes..I guarantee you a different experience than your other business travellers. Isla couldn't be more different than Cancun.

I have been told that snorkeling north of the main PM pier , near the other pier is good but we didn't have time to try this location. My scouting reports said all the coral was by boat ride We were staying 2 .5 blks south of the main pier / square
