I just looked a goggle map and it looks like the bush family could very easily connect the property from the north and use property they own next to ABR.

Well, that would explain why ABR is silent on the plans. Perhaps the wrong people are being asked the questions.

If the information monofrio has posted is correct I see this as a win-win situation. The Ortiz family gets a large cash infusion into their account for doing much needed upgrades to the ABR. It slightly changes from a 250 room resort to a 180 to 200 room resort. People now have the opportunity to rent, or if your pockets are deep enough, to own a beautiful beach front condo on Akumal Bay. The local restaurants get more business from the folks in the condos. And everyone just keeps happily enjoying the beautiful area of Akumal. That's my 2 pesos on the situation.

Condos would be great, there are too few of them on main Akumal Bay, bring em! MtnMan makes good points also. Just hope I could afford them.

I was able to talk to some local Mayans. ( Just learning the language ) Here's what I was told, if I interrupted correctly. The round shape restaurant and the old ruins of ABR are being torn down due to a JOINT venture between the Bush and Ortiz family's . The property between ABR and Akumal Club Caribe (which includes the old Buddha garden) will become an activity center. No condos. No hotel. Just an activity center. More palapas to be added, possibly tennis courts, ping pong, etc. Now I am not sure if it is also for the thousands of backpackers poring into to Akumal bay, or just the two resorts. Either way, this is not good for the long timers looking to get away from noise. But if you are a woohooer, than great for you. Personally, I am not happy about it at all. But I understand that both resorts are struggling in this economy, and they need to do what they feel is right.

The new look ABR I agree. I would bet dollars to donuts on it.. as to what becomes of the property no longer part of ABR....do the residents/owners in akumal have a say? Must it be approved at a "city council" meeting? Curious how things work down there.

Bosco--I would think there are some laws in place. Didn't a LG'er try to buy Lucy's and had problems getting approval? Seems like I read that here. Now that businesss is health related so who knows! Probably will turn out "who you know" and I'm sure those two families know everyone and how to smooth out the rough spots $$$. My dollar says they'll get what they want.

I just do not see how an activity center would make any money. Sorry.
