I would like to use this post as an investigative post. one to cure the curiosity of the recent changes at ABR. the facts as you know them. i know this can be an emotional charged issue and the temptation to express our assumptions and dissapointment are great. I understand that. I am looking for the truth as you know it.

this what I have heard :

I talked to a real estate person in the area and they said that the Ortiz family sold the property of buildings one and two and moonrise bar to the bush family. from what I heard, they are going to build Condo's.

Now i also heard through you guys that the tennis court were involved, the old italian al la carte.

when I was there in October they were dismantleing part of the old entrance( where they rented 4 wheelers) and what about the old gym.

If from what I hear this is what I see. correct me if you have different info and/or conclusion:

the second entrance near the Old atm would be the entrance to the condo complex. as you enter there are many buildings that I would assume be part of the project. the tennis court and all the above would be also part of it.

I tried to download a map of the resort but file was too large so I am linking a sight of a map and maybe someone else can post it and maybe we can mark off the buildings that go down. this is a good mystery :O) lets have fun with it and try to solve it together.

Link of map:

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=akumal+beach+resort+map&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&tbo=d&biw=1067&bih=697&tbm=isch&tbnid=4YeVpkxlXFtlHM:&imgrefurl=http://www.playa.info/playa-del-carmen-forum/24911-akumal-beach-resort-trip-report-aug-2006-a.html&docid=9OcaFDcSAxfb9M&imgurl=http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a151/canard1/ABRmap.jpg&w=605&h=450&ei=bePJUI7ELaXw2gXpuIHYDg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=83&sig=103140938940947138668&page=4&tbnh=140&tbnw=206&start=72&ndsp=27&ved=1t:429,r:73,s:0,i:309&tx=145&ty=128

most buildings left of building number 3, I see being torn down.

I just looked a goggle map and it looks like the bush family could very easily connect the property from the north and use property they own next to ABR.

Well, that would explain why ABR is silent on the plans. Perhaps the wrong people are being asked the questions.

The new look ABR

I think everyone agrees that those old buildings were toast! Don't understand the weeping and gnashing of teeth. Out with the old and in with the new!

If the information monofrio has posted is correct I see this as a win-win situation.
The Ortiz family gets a large cash infusion into their account for doing much needed upgrades to the ABR. It slightly changes from a 250 room resort to a 180 to 200 room resort.
People now have the opportunity to rent, or if your pockets are deep enough, to own a beautiful beach front condo on Akumal Bay.
The local restaurants get more business from the folks in the condos.
And everyone just keeps happily enjoying the beautiful area of Akumal.
That's my 2 pesos on the situation.

ABR as a smaller resort - cool. As long as they don't make their beach overly crowded with day trippers.

Wouldn't condos have less max capacity and decrease the environmental impact?

I have the feeling they will not be in our budget, but if they were i would definitely be all for a condo there.

If you get a condo in Akumal, I really wish you would consider adopting me....even if as a 'long lost sister.'

I was able to talk to some local Mayans. ( Just learning the language ) Here's what I was told, if I interrupted correctly. The round shape restaurant and the old ruins of ABR are being torn down due to a JOINT venture between the Bush and Ortiz family's . The property between ABR and Akumal Club Caribe (which includes the old Buddha garden) will become an activity center. No condos. No hotel. Just an activity center. More palapas to be added, possibly tennis courts, ping pong, etc. Now I am not sure if it is also for the thousands of backpackers poring into to Akumal bay, or just the two resorts. Either way, this is not good for the long timers looking to get away from noise. But if you are a woohooer, than great for you. Personally, I am not happy about it at all. But I understand that both resorts are struggling in this economy, and they need to do what they feel is right.

I agree.

I would bet dollars to donuts on it..

as to what becomes of the property no longer part of ABR....do the residents/owners in akumal have a say? Must it be approved at a "city council" meeting?

Curious how things work down there.

Bosco--I would think there are some laws in place.  Didn't a LG'er try to buy Lucy's and had problems getting approval?  Seems like I read that here.  Now that businesss is health related so who knows!
Probably will turn out "who you know" and I'm sure those two families know everyone and how to smooth out the rough spots $$$.  My dollar says they'll get what they want.

Most definitely need a full on suit. And the first responders on the lookout. Talk about surf, sneaker waves and rip tides. We got all of the above. MM can tell you about those sneakers, and he was way much souther on the "dark" side of the oceans.

If'n you're coming to Orygun, let me know buddy. There's some kewl bad a$$ beaches.

We're coming down for the first time in February, and this thread has eased my mind some. Since we've never been there, I have no attachment to the Moonrise (although I understand, because I'm sure we would have if we had been before). My primary concern was that we'd be be inundated by construction noise constantly. We requested building 6, which looks to be at the far end of where the construction is taking place, so I feel better about that now. Thank you for clarifying the what and the where visually, that was very helpful!

MSpink - building 7 is the farthest away.

Tish - did I understand you to say you are learning and can speak Mayan? WOW! That must be an incredibly difficult language to learn.

Bring in more day trippers and charge them for a full day snorkel and activities tour.
