Hanging out under the snorkel boat...Barry's BIG BROTHER!! (They play music, and he either likes it....or they're feeding him). It's not the first time I've seen him hanging out under the boat that come in with snorkel groups.

I was swimming over to check him out (using video for a change) and he decided to swim out to ... sign autographs? pose for photos? Not sure. we got a little too close to each other and I had to put my hand up on the boat to stop my momentum...but even though this is a SHORT VIDEO...listen at the end...you can hear him SNAP!

You are way braver than I am!!! I have often tried to get a front picture of barry. One time he came over to me in Cozumel. My heart rate went way up and I left, knowing I could never outrun him. Camera??? I think I had a camera with me.....

I always see a Barry (4-5+ ft) under the boats at Akumal

Saw a 4+ ft Grouper there as well in May12 - uglier teeth

Soleil loves to tell the snorkel tours about the barries right beside them - never seen them swim so fast to shore

Why didn't you give him a good teeth flossing while you were at it?

Does the original Barrie still live right off the dive shop at ABR? We saw him both years we stayed there but that was 6-7 years ago. We've been condo'ing in HMB in recent years and never got that far down snorkeling in Akumal Bay

Thanks
Grant

Wow,, he is a beauty!!
I would actually like to be that close to one.. minding my fingers however..LOL

I got a video last year in Cuba of a Barracuda actually getting a fish,, they are incredibly quick. I had to slow the frame rate down to 1/8 of the regular time just to be able to see it playback on the video..

Great Video.. thanks for posting it!!

Happy Travels.

Saw a barracuda in the 5' plus range, straight out from the Italian Restaurant back in March. Could that be the Barry? I dive North Carolina regularly, but this guy hanging out in about 10' of water, was in the running for the biggest one I've ever seen. Was actually kind of glad the wife had turned back early.

Yeah, I would think that's him. I saw him in February and April, August. He usually hangs out right under the boat that comes in with snorkel tours. I really think they're feeding the fish because they've become somewhat aggressive by 'getting in your face' when you snorkel over. Last time I'd seen him, some woman was going to get in the water from the boat - and she'd have just about ridden him like a horse. I told the guide, he was right underneath her legs as she sat on the side of the boat!

The original Barry - they one we saw 6-7 yrs back was much thicker and older / uglier - I will see if I can find some of my older photos

As for feeding them, I have seen many captain's / mates cleaning thier catches on the rocks near the Dive Shop and thowing the 'scraps' into the water, thus the Groupers and barries hang out there
