Would love to check out Half Moon Bay this trip, but have read lots about shallow water and currents. Are there any guides based in the bay we could hire to take us in and show us the best entry points and areas to snorkel our first time in?

I snorkeled half moon bay every morning for a week in early november. I would go out just south of vista del mar and head out slightly south to a small rock sticking out of the water a ways out. I would also walk down to la lunita restaurant and go out near there also south to some small rocks sticking out. there is small waves sometimes but even so it can be done. There is cool stuff closer in so only go further out if you feel safe.

And remember, those are not rocks! It is coral, please do not touch or stand on it!

There is a tour operator just across the road from Playa Blanca , beside the little store . I saw a youngish french fellow from that shop doing some private tours in November . If you decide to try on your own just start and finish at the north end of the bay somewhere near La Lunita or north the first time or two . There are some two foot concrete pavers to take advantage of in front of the La Joya condos for the easiest entry and then traverse to the north in three or four feet of water over to La Lunita and then head out to the easily discernable reef heading north . Post something here just before you want to go and maybe someone will work for free or small tequilas .

Thanks for all the info everyone! Due to all the great information on here over the years,we have learned the Coral "Do's and "Don'ts" and never go out alone or without our snorkel vests.I have the map of Half Moon Bay I printed off before our 2009 trip but didn't make it over there.Going to make that a priority this trip.
