On the drive down we tried to use our bank card for fuel and the fellow showed us the reader and it said declined, so we scrambled for pesos, paid in full and went on down the road. After arriving at our paradise home we tried to use our card for fuel and again was told it was declined. Paid in full with pesos and went on down the road. We have used the card many times for groceries, hardware and other things and never a problem. Shortly after the 2nd Pemex decline I just happened to be on line checking our bank account and saw the charge was pending. We expected it to fall off as of course we did not sign after we were told the card was declined. Checked back to the first card decline and saw that charge had gone through even though we paid cash. HMMM- new Pemex scam???My bank is working on it but wanted to give a heads up to those who may have experienced something similar. No mas tarjetas at Pemex solo pesos!!

These Pemex guys are famous for knowing every scam in the book and inventing some new ones. I would never given them any card. Likely the top income "earners" in all of Mexico!!

inventing some new ones So did the Shell gas stations learn from Pemex or the other way Shell gas stations in Canada (BC) charged users a max of 100$ last week rather than the actual amount used

Verano . There are two main scams . The first involves not zeroing the pump from a previous fill up . You pay for the last guys gas as well as your own even though he paid too . This may have happened to you given your information , unless you have a very large vehicle . The second involves some very talented "sleight of hand" in very skillfully and rapidly "changing a reddish 500 peso note into a reddish 50 peso note that a tourist might actually mistakenly offer . People have suggested only asking for 200 pesos and then using a 200 peso note to allow less chance for monkey business . I recently read that even this tactic can be fooled because the attendant can pre select your 200 pesos as you request so that the pump shuts off automatically at the selected amount but that they can double bump the nozzle , somehow , to appear that it shut off as requested . The bottom line is that you must knuckle down and get your game face on and closely watch the entire transaction without being sidetracked by anyone else . Discuss the bill that you offer while it is in your hand . I have been tricked by BOTH of the main scams in the past and almost by the extremely slow addition of the last bill of your change and life goes on , but pay close attention and be seen to be paying close attention to the attendant . It is a shameful practice but part of the deal . Last trip I was innocently flashing my 500 peso note as the fill up progressed only to replace it by correct change on completion . I head faked the guy with counter misdirection and I am so easily amused that I enjoyed some small measure of skill at the (his) game .

ORIGINAL: ChicagoCraig That is a great heads up. ANd sure does sound like a new scam method. I, like the others, just pay cash. quote:

Whoa.....200 pesos should get you at least a half tank. How did your transaction go down? I made sure they zeroed out the pump but i went back into the car to get cash and someone got in front of the car to "check under the hood" so i looked at him. so i didn't see what was going on the entire time. it wasn't until i drove away and looked at the pump to see how many liters were included that i noticed that ONLY the total amount was showing. i am pretty sure we were scammed. so don't go to the pemex on constatutionyents (sp) on the way back to 307.

That is the scam that they pulled on me in San Cristobal... someone asks you a question and you look away for a moment and suddenly the screen changes... no amount of gas shown only the cash amount due. Only $7 US but I cursed them out and put a hex on their families as I got my gas cap back on.

Verano..... Two get out of the car. One keeps an eye on the pump and the other keeps an eye on everything else. The guy at the pump NEVER diverts there attention away from the pump. NEVER let Pemex open the hood(bonnet) of the car. Show the money to the attendant and verify what you are handing them. CB
