It has been over 2 weeks now since I got home and have finally decided to do my trip report. This was my 3rd trip to ABR and this time I had a friend to travel with. My friend, and newbie, Joan came along and she was as charmed by Akumal and the resort as I am.

It seemed like an endless flight down from Vancouver but the view over America was great. The airport was very crowded and I anticipated a long long wait, but it did move along fairly quickly. Both of us got the green light and out to the waiting transport to the hotel.

We had requested Building 6 with 2 double beds and got Building 7 with a king sized bed. that was rectified the next day and we got a 3rd floor room in Building 6 with a great view of the ocean. Air condition worked although we didn't need it as the breeze was so nice. Lots of hot water too. And a resident gecko.

This was Joan's initiation to snorkeling and she did great. We saw so many fishes and turtles. We both had issues with foggy masks but that didn't adversely affect the fun. Loved being down by the Moonrise under our palapa. Both of us were careful to get enough shade so that we didn't burn.

The wind was a constant and it did churn up the sand rendering the visibility less than perfect. To my chagrin, when I got home and looked at the webcam the water has been as smooth as glass every day since lol.

We did one touristy day to the Tulum ruins. We intended to take the colectivo, but walking out to the road it was SO HOT away from the breeze at the beach that we indulged in a cab. For 400 pesos the driver took us right to the entrance, waited about 3 hours for us to look around and then too us back to ABR. A good deal I thought. The ruins were amazing and the waves at the beach even more so.

The gathering at the Lol Ha on Nov 12th arranged by Gato was so much fun. Got new signatures on my cooler. The rain that followed was incredible. I love meeting the people that I have gotten to know on here.

Both of us thought that the food was wonderful. I am not usually a fish eater, but I had the fish twice a day - it was so good. And I always love it when they have real Mexican dishes on the buffet. Took in the Mexican specialty dinner and had a chile relleno - first time for that and it was delicious.

Walking up past Building 7 where the grounds staff do not clean up the seaweed it was dismaying to see how much plastic is washed up. Over 2 days Joan filled 5 bags with the plastic and that was just a tip of the iceberg.

It was very nice to see that the hotel has put out containers on the beach for cigarette butts. And very not nice to see that some people are such lazy pigs that they still flick their butts into the sand instead of walking 2 or 3 steps to the containers.

I was amazed to see how many turtle nests were on the beach. Unfortunately there was a turtle release when we were there and we missed it. Maybe next year.

Although the snorkeling was not perfect I am glad that we were there before the Moonrise was taken apart. It will be interesting to see how things progress over the next little while.

All in all it was a wonderful trip.

Hopefully these links will lead to my pictures on Picasa.

What beautiful pictures! I love the colours in the squid. It looks like Joan had a great intro to snorkel. Glad you had a great vacation.

Nipper, those squids were looking at me with the same intensity that I was looking at them. It has made me rethink eating animals.

Beautiful pictures - the colors are beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing :) Can't wait to get there in March! I have to ask, what kind of camera are you using?

HI Pinkscallop. It was really nice to meet another enthusiastic snorkeler!
Nice photos, can't get enough of those stoplight parrot fish. Your friend floating looks like a juvenile yellowtail damsel fish
Let's hope you get back to see a turtle release one day.

Thanks for all the compliments. Rupietoot, I use a Canon D10 on the underwater setting. The water was not very clear and the original pictures were very cloudy. i cleaned them up on Picasa and that was the result.

Barata and ChrisandCindy it was great to finally meet you too.
