We are going to be in Akumal for a couple months next summer and I am trying to figure out the best (most economical) way to be able to call back to the US. I would simply stick with E-mail, but because of some family situations we will need to have phone access. I've been looking at Vonage and also thought about adding an international plan to our AT&T account. I know you can purchase phone cards and am willing to consider getting an unlocked phone with a number in Mexico. We will have internet access at the condo so VoIP is a possibility. Does any one have any thoughts or experience? Thanks.

Skype and Magic Jack both have worked well for us. If you take either of these routes be sure to activate them while you are in the States as rates go up a lot if you set them up when you are in Mexico.

Yes, Skype, Magic Jack, Vonage, they'll all work well.

Skype has a $2.99 per month subscription that allows unlimited calling to the US and Canada.

This.

And if you must have a cell phone, go to an AT&T store here in the states and buy the cheapest prepaid GO-phone they have.
25 cents a minute back to the states. They have other calling plans as well.
