Does one of the dive shops in the ABR area offer a resort dive course. Would like to try this just to see if we would enjoy it. Too cold up here to even think about diving anytime soon.

Yes they do, I have stayed at Hotel Akumal Caribe (HAC as it is known here) and at least once a week I have seen them bring rookie divers over to the hotel pool from Akumal Dive Center next door. I am pretty sure that the other two dive shops offer this as well. Have fun, wish this was something I could try.

All of the dive shops in the area offer an introductory (resort) dive. It takes a couple of hours as they give you some instruction and pool (or bay) practice before taking you on a reef dive (usually around 30'). My very first intro to scuba was with the Dive Center during an Akumal trip and have been hooked ever since. Caution - once hooked you can NOT get unhooked! Wife is just as in to it and we've ended up on dive trips all over the caribbean and pacific (U/W cameras, strobes, the whole bit). We will be back in Akumal later this week so that she can complete her 100th dive where she did her very 1st open water dive. It's fun!

It's a great way to see if you want to get certified.

I have a girlfriend who doesn't want to get certified but loves doing one or two dives on vacation. It works out perfectly for us. I do a deep dive then meet her for a shallow one. She's done it 3 times now on vacation. The last time she was a little bored with the hour or so of training, it all comes back quickly.

too funny - no need to go elsewhere

The local Dive Shops offer a pool dive right at ABR pool and then takes you out on an ocean dive

Email ABR for details
