I am struggling with this subject. I guess I could try to write an email to administration, at ABR, for an update or explanation but I thought for sure a Locogringo would have the scoop on this. I guess there is something to be said for not releasing tenative plans for new construction at the resort. But I would also think that ABR would want to inform thier loyal guests, of the plans. Surely with the fences and buildings being torn down, they would give us an update. Or do we matter and are we just "dust in the wind".
I am going to follow the forum for awhile and hopefully this mystery will be solved. I have seen change over the last 33 years I have visited, some I like some I don't. but come on, there has to be some sort of plan of what they are doing with the property by the moonrise bar. And if anyone has photos of progess. I would love to see them..

Those that know aren't saying and some of those that don't know are speculating like crazy. About all I know is that usually the most they tell you when you book a resort is "Construction in progress, some additional noise can be expected during the day." But I don't know if ABR is even mentioning that. And I don't know for sure but I think ABR is doing what they can to stay viable. Will it work for them? Who knows? All of us ABR-aholics are breathlessly waiting. And yes, pics of construction would be nice.

We will be down on Dec 12th and can take some pictures and give an update. We were going to make a sign and take it down but with no place to hang it that will have to wait.

I too I am waiting on pin and needles. I have been in contact with the ABR about having our "ceremony" at the Moonrise. I have inquired about the rumors, which they tell me no worries, that it will be a beautiful ceremony. REALLY? Where do they plan on holding it.

The construction stress is to much. Therefore, I am back to trying to find a venue that will hold 20+ people.

More than likely they would hold it under the small palapa by the main lobby.  It's usually plan B when the weather doesn't cooperate for holding ceremonies at the moonrise.

“ABR being rebuilt”

Here's a cut & paste from that other site. I don't see anything here on LG yet but it sounds like we can expect some photos from VSD soon.

Just returned. talked to Management and the construction posts/barriers are going up. Bldg 1,2, most of 3 , Moonrise bar, old dive shop and the old alacarte complex will soon be gone. the vacant lot by bldg 1 will also be in the new rebuilt section. it should take 2 years to complete, hopefully less. will post photos over on LG"

Just learned from friends who are ABR regulars (as we have been for 10 years) that almost all activities are no longer available (archery, tennis, pingpong, exercise room, etc) and that the Moonrise Bar has been torn down. They learned this only AFTER booking their trip and then calling the resort when they learned about the remodeling. ABR management has also been very coy about the construction (over two years ??) on their Facebook page, not really posting any info of value to guests. I am not willing to listen to unabated construction noise while trying to relax on a most beautiful beach, and am very unhappy with the lack of honesty on the part of the ABR. For 2013, we're looking to go elsewhere, perhaps the Catalonia Royal Tulum. Anyone have comments on that resort? We've never been there. Thanks for any info and/or updates anyone can provide about ABR.

ABR is a business and as such, I'm sure it doesn't want to drive away customers during construction.  They are building a new building to replace the aging older ones and perhaps that is a good thing,  Noise will be inevitable....just like change is, but the waves will probably drown out most of it.

If you don't want to be around during the work in progress, then perhaps booking another resort is the best option.

Cheers,
Seagoat

People, many of whom are longtime customers, just want and deserve honest basic info from ABR so they can make informed decisions. That's all anyone is asking for. It's not like this is something that can be kept hidden or quiet for long. ABR isn't doing themselves any favors by responding to inquiries with vague, evasive "answers". Some people will choose to go there during the transition/construction. Others won't. But they need to know what's happening in order to decide.

I wonder if they will construct a temporary beach bar as two years is a bit long to have to wait to get a drink!

Pretty snakey.

I understand change can be good. And I am all for ABR finding ways to bring back the people. However, this is NOT a simple vacation for us! We chose this area because we love it and wanted to share it with our family. However, for ABR to take my money for our ceremony and not say anything! That's shady in my opinion.

But you know what? Its not the only beach in that area and at this point, I will gladly move down the road.

Oh boy....I've been following all the news about ABR for the last week now. Gotta say, info is less than vague as to what they plan for the interim in regards to a beach bar. We have booked again for the end of Feb. and are bringing another couple. I'm starting to get a little worried we made the wrong decision.they fell in love with the place based on our "good times" at the Moonrise, the access to snorkelling and palapas adjacent to it, and the general peace and quiet, laid back vacation that went with it. A construction zone isn't in my vacation plans anywhere.period.and large crowded beach areas and beach chair/palapa wars don't rate very high on my list either.hope they figure it out soon. I haven't broken the news to our travel companions yet, and options for booking another Akumal place may have to be made. So disappointing!

We already know what is happening.  It has begun and will continue for some time.  It really is ABR's choice to either try to keep this quiet or shout it from the rooftops.  If you were the owner, what would make most business sense to you?
If the construction is not something you are willing to tolerate, then it's best not to go until the construction is over.

Seagoat -

We don't know the extent -they could put the fence up and not do anything for months.

To be honest, I am going to HAC end of March/April and if there is jackhammers all day long on the other side of the fence - I am not going to be happy. I don't know if that will be the case because I have no idea what they are doing and how close to HAC they are building.

I will wait and see what happens in the next few months - but construction noise was not in my Itinerary....

And I am sad to see that empty lot go -
but hopeful that the change will fantastic...

I wonder how firm the plans are at this point and perhaps that is why they are reluctant to say much.  Construction usually involves hic ups and delays at the best of times, and we are talking Mexico here.

I hope for your sake ( and others as well) that the noise and upheaval is minimal.  I'll be first in line to try out the new rooms, which will still hopefully be affordable to most of us!

Cheers,
Seagoat

I agree - but you may need to get behind me to try the new rooms out -

I heard a rumor, well partially spectuation - now keep in mind both parties were intoxicated, but one does have some really good insite when remembered correctly, the other - well not the sharpest knife in the drawyer.

So, what am saying, I think we should be ready for a swim-up bar and water slide at the ABR!!!

That would be so much fun, just think of ALL the small children, drunk drownding adults all in fancy ABR pee pool water!!!

Ya, baby let the fun times begin!

BINK!

Never stayed there, but the noise coming from the beach area was so loud I could hear it underwater while snorkeling at Xpu-Ha beach.

Suffice it to say we will not be staying there. Just a bit too much "activity" for me.

What about HAC? Not an AI but still on Akumal Bay.

I'm really sad to see so many negative posts about the new goings on at ABR. Everyone has complained about how the place is going downhill, the standard rooms are bad, etc etc. So now they are doing something about it and they're being shot down before they get in the air.
I agree with Seagoat, it's a business, they won't want to run customers off. Yes, there will probably be a bit of noise, which could be why they are putting the temporary new Moonrise down by building 6 & 7, so it's quieter and not as dusty. The snack bar is a fine place to hang out and it has food. The snorkeling out front is great. And there aren't a bunch of daytrippers. (I sooo hope ABR won't be taking the snorkel groups out south of building 3, then I will be really worried for the reef)
Since I don't go to ABR's fb page or their website I have no idea if they are warning people about the changes to the resort - they really should say something. But hey, it's Mexico - I bet even the construction crew doesn't know when they're starting. Or finishing.
Stay calm and carry on - until there's some real news.

Agree with you Barata. The fences were being pounded into the sand during my last snorkel on Nov 30th.

People complain about the lousy rooms/mold, etc in the old buidlings, well now they're doing something about it.

ABR is like a cult following....so many people have so much to say. Folks, we don't own the property, it's TIME for some much needed updates! It's TIME for some changes, I only hope that with those changes they don't spike their rates - just because they (think) they can. I'm all for updating and improvements, I just hope they don't change my 'home' into some monsterous mega/modern place. I want to come home to 'welcomes' and hugs...I don't want to come home to strangers....that's not home.

I hope, REALLY HOPE that they curtail their damn snorkel groups out of the dive shop area because from what I saw my last week there, they were one of the biggest offenders, and the poor turtles seem like they are being 'crowded' south in the bay..not good for them, or for the coral Very sad to see....

Why would ABR tear down all of their oldest buildings -- except one? Why tear down the alacarte restaurants, the dive shop, the Moonrise and buildings 1, 2 and most of 3 (whatever most of 3 means)? Seriously. Why spend 2 years in construction and end up with one old building -- #4 --- right in the middle of everything? That really makes no sense to me and has me pondering the possibilities.

I just went to ABRs own website. I didn't see anything mentioning construction. They still list 3 restaurants and 3 bars. The Moonrise is still on the resort layout map. If I were to book there for the first time through their website. I think that I would wonder where I was when I arrived.

Personally, we booked through LG for May before hearing about the changes. May is a ways off. So, I'm taking a wait and see attitude before we decide to change our plans.

Well I have only stayed there once, in 2009 during the height of swine flu (and I think I was the last person to checkout the day they closed) but I really liked the place. Venta was running it then, the food was decent (well dinners could have been improved upon) and I stayed in 403 and loved the room. Just hoping they will have some construction sales, as I would like to go back in May. I love HAC but dang, their prices are getting up there for this gal who lives on Social Security and a small pension. CRT looks good but cannot afford their single supplement at 100% of the per person rate. Maybe Playa Caribe Casitas if ABR does not drop their rates during low season and construction.

So what is ABR telling LG? Are they being more forthcoming with the booking agencies? Personally I am fine with whatever they do with the property as long as time share sharks aren't involved, and the bay itself is protected. I just would like to know what to expect as far as amenities when we book.

As for jackhammering beside HAC, there are only palm trees in the empty lot ?????
