Read on here somewhere that somebody paid 8 bucks to go snorkeling there. Is this standard?

I think it's about $10 USD now.

We were there late in the day Saturday and the water was orange and murky couldn't see a thing. Anybody know what that was?

We experienced a huge area of that brown water heading out towards the sea side. Took forever to get through and very disconcerting............

We had this experience a few years back and in lesser degrees many other times . There was a very limited area in one mid November snorkel .

Clear at the entry

Cloudy at the mid point and flats , clear at the ocean rock

I don't think it's a good idea to swim in a sewer. Yuck!
Plus, you had to pay?

There was a thread a while back on this topic.

Some said that the emulsion is the result of the fresh water coming from the underground cenote mixing in with the salt water.

If the water was contaminated, one would think that there would be an absence of fish.

Can anyone veryify this?

We snorkelled in Yal ku in the spring and it was $10 each, and we had a locker for our stuff. (FYI) When the freshwater from the cenote meets the saltwater from the sea it creates what is known as a halocline (sp). The water is not discolored, but things will appear very blurry as a result of the halocline. If the water is discolored, this is not necessarily bc of the halocline, but something else. The freshwater (generally) sits on top of the saltwater, in that the saltwater is heavier/denser. If the discoloration is on the surface (the freshwater) then probably the input is from the cenote. If the discoloration is lower in the water column then it may be input from the sea. If the discoloration is throughout, then it would seem that there is probably some mixing going on through the water column. Mixing can occur as a result of wave action, and sometimes temperature changes in the water column. Without knowing the actual water chemistry of the discolored water, it is very difficult to know (or guess) the source, the cause or if it is a "pollutant" to be concerned about. It could even be just organics being "kicked up" from the sediment. Anyhow, hope this helps a little.
As for me personally, I don't like snorkelling in a halocline because the vis usually sucks

LOL..I think what you experienced is brackish water.  Don't think it's poop! .  Keep in mind that you are paying for the upkeep of the lovely grounds with the pretty plants and sculptures, showers, lockers, banjo, etc.  A small price to pay imho.  My advice would be go left and swim into the lagoon away from the ocean.  The clarity is better there.

Cheers,
Seagoat

The middle photo here is what we encountered. Crunch is right. We had to wade through the area of absolutely no visibility for a good 15 minutes to get to clear water. It was brown in color and I could see my hands but that was it. I kept thinking I might run into a rock or something so I kept my arms out to act as early warning indicators. This brown stuff was not the result of halcilyne (or however you spell it).
