As part of Birgette's birthday celebration, we had a dinner for all the S.H.*.T. Members. The celebration started with special cocktails and a pinata … what a fun time ! AnotherBob, as President of the S.H.*.T. Bored of Directors, presented Humphrey's family with their honorary S.H.*.T. Neck wallets. This is Humphrey, the Chi hua hua. And this ....... is Humphrey in action: http://youtu.be/gaxYZdnhUyA Remember that big surprise ? Our Social Butterfly, Rose …. hmmmm … you have to really know her to understand her. She is the conscience of the group … wagging her finger, tsk, tsk, tsking, or “oh my”ing when we do something off color. You see, Lasse and Birgitte have been “living in sin” (Rose's words) for the past 6 years and Rose decided that was long enough. To appease her, it was decided that a mock wedding be held as part of the dinner for all the S.H.*.T. Members. Wedding music was downloaded onto a computer which was hooked up to a set of Ipod speakers. A bouquet was made from the flowers on the resort. We used part of a Halloween costume as a headpiece and NotTheMama donated a ring made out of a dollar bill as “the ring”. One of the group is an internet minister and his only concern was whether or not he could actually marry them … this was, after all, a mock wedding. Once he was assured that it would not be legal, everything was set for the surprise. I say surprise because almost everyone knew about this but Birgette (the intended bride), her daughters, the boyfriend of one of the daughters and about ½ of the group. After dinner was done, Birgette and her daughters were led to the front of the restaurant …accompanied by the “wedding march” to a waiting Lasse and the “minister”. A very short “service” was performed and then ….. well, I'll let the pictures explain. Lasse telling Birgette that he has to speak in English ... And the answer is ....... YES ! The happy family !!! The happy family with the "minister" and Matchmaker Rose ! The happy couple !! A possible honeymoon at CRT in October ? Shortly before leaving for CRT, we saw on Facebook that CRT was sponsoring a school in Puerto Aventuras. A quick email to the group resulted in a collection of school supplies. After we got back, the General Manager of CRT sent us a few pictures of the presentation of the supplies to which he added all of our Halloween decorations. We now have a new goal for the May trip. We did the customary shopping expedition into PDC – and it was HOT ! David arranged a taxi for us (this time WITHOUT a guide) and we made arrangements for him to come back and get us at 2:00 p.m. We hit Hacienda Tequilla and picked up some chocolate tequilla, Xtabentun, hot sauce, agave nectar, and vanilla. Negotiated a pretty good price for a hammock and two hammock chairs from a store on one of the mid blocks. Bought a beautiful scarf on 5th Avenue from a store that looks like it should be in India .. $9 and I'm still kicking myself for not buying more. Drinks and snacks at LePez – our customary stop on our walk up and down 5th and then back to the pick up location. PEOPLE THAT WE MET: You all know about CabinBoy's hats. They are definitely conversation starters and because of them we have met some really fantastic people. This year, we were lucky enough to meet Julie and Gary from Wales. Unfortunately, they were winding down from having already spent 12 days at CRT, so we met them at the end of their vacation. They were “absolutely” hysterical and we only wish we could have spent more time with them. As a matter of fact, they were the ones that introduced us to the Mexican Flag shots. If you've never had one, they're made of: grenadine on the bottom, clear Tequilla in the middle and then a mixture of green crème de menthe and vodka on the top. If it's done right, all colors remain separate and don't mix. My only suggestion is to make sure you down them in one gulp – don't sip ! In true Mexico style, they didn't have enough of the correct glasses at the bar and so they made them in the small salt shakers. Yes, salt shakers without the tops. That just added to the fun. We all had them again at Lasse's birthday party and they are so much better when you just throw them back. You live and learn ! It was nice to finally meet RUCruizin and her DH when they and TomKatWinipeg and his DW spent some time at Playa XpuHa. We had met TomKat when the LGers did the medical supply fundraiser and it was good to see them again. CabinBoy and AnotherBob spent some time with them at the beach, while I ended up suffering from a serious attack of sand gravity. It was really good to see Renee and Dave and Meli and Mark. They are always there during October and we'll sit with them and catch up whenever we can. Last year Renee and Dave gave CabinBoy a hat that was a beer stein …. this year it was a very handsome frog. He was worn and is now packed safely away for next May's trip. ABOUT CRT: There were no big surprises at CRT, just some minor changes we had heard about before we got there. Lunch at the snack bar has changed a little. You used to be able to order pizza by the slice or baskets of french fries, but that has changed. You now have to sit down and order lunch from an expanded menu; calamari, fish and chips, veal burger, nacho supreme, hot dogs, pizza, french fries, etc. The towel game has just about disappeared thanks to a new process they put in place. The towel shack has been turned into a “game shack” where you can get ping pong paddles and board games. When you check in, you are given two towels. Every night, the turn down staff will take your dirty towels and replace them with two clean ones. Works like a charm ! The staff was the best as always and we found ourselves gravitating to a couple of specific servers during breakfast and lunch. A multi-day running joke regarding Cabin Boy stealing the silverware (can you guess who was the instigator ? ?) became a huge source of entertainment for the wait staff at breakfast and lunch. One of our favorites, Fernando, even brought CabinBoy a plastic fork, spoon, and knife as a way to convince him that they knew he was stealing the real utensils. Tons of fun ! If you ever get to CRT, please tell Fernando that we said “hello” and the silverware is holding up well ! The Vera Club was in full force and the resort was at 100% for a number of days that we were there. No issues to speak of. As a matter of fact, even though the resort was 100% full, the beach and pool seemed empty to us. We finally figured out that most of the visitors there through Vera Club leave during the day on excursions. The Animation team consisted of new members since our visit in October of last year. The new group seemed to be a little more low key. The head of the group was not as outgoing as Salvo who was the previous head....he was a hoot, running up and down the beach waving and stopping by to chat with us every day. We participated in bingo every day and never felt left out. CRT has a couple of new animation team members, also. They always stopped by and chatted whenever they were in the area. CRT is not known for its aggressive animation teams and that's just fine with us. I read in one of the trip reports that ABR is thinking about getting chair cushions. It must be time for all of them to do that as the chair cushions for the chairs around the pool were in short supply. We had heard that they had requested new ones … but they had not arrived during our stay. For some unknown reason, CRT created a premier seating area in the old massage hut. There are two sun beds, chairs, you have your own waiter available at you beck and call and the area is roped off so that no one can invade your territory. In the two weeks that we were there, I never saw anyone sitting in the area … Hmmmmmm …...I wonder if it is the $50 per person cost ? Hey, you never know what's going to work until you try it. The coati's were in full force and for some reason people just don't get it ..... they are wild animals and should not be fed "people" food. To me, it is just so frustrating .... Towel art was as wonderful as usual ..... so cute ! CUSTOMARY FOOD PORN ! THE LAST DAYS Why is it that the last days seem like they are moving at twice the speed of light ? Is it because time DOES fly when you're having fun ? Are we the only ones that feel like this ? I can't believe how fast this trip went for us. Both of us admitted that we could have stayed another 5 or 6 days and been perfectly happy … but the real world was calling …. jobs were calling … kids were calling … grandchildren were calling … and the cats were calling. So back into the real world via U.S. Airways – Cancun to Philly to White Plains. … and back to SANDY ! Such a cute name with such devastation and destruction. For many of us Northeasters, memories of our childhood spent on the Jersey shore are all that is left. Gas shortages … something that I never thought my children would ever experience … are being experienced again. We are fortunate … we were without power for only 2 days. Maybe the reason that this vacation was more meaningful is that we finally realize that things can change in a New York Minute. Moral of the story …. don't sweat the small stuff … go on vacation and experience it all … the good and the bad … that's what life is all about. Hope you enjoyed this trip report ….. look for another one in May of next year – we're already planning ! The Members of Sun Hunters International Travel NOTE: ALL HATS COURTESY OF CABIN BOY
