5 people to CUN in early June with taxes, fees, etc.

Spirit Airlines - $1288
American Airlines - $2169

I don't know if you've priced Spirit lately but that's very reasonable (considering American has lost their ever loving mind). I priced two adults on Spirit - $555.

I've tried to make Spirit work for us, Doug.

By the time I added all the baggage, etc. fees, took note of the crappy flight schedules and saw the layover times and stops I went running back to the luke-warm embrace of AA.

Sad to see that Sun Country out of DFW has stopped being competitive also. I really liked them.

I didn't factor baggage fees but the times were perfect for us. Non-stop too.

air fares are ludicrous - at least up here.

Looking at $2800 return for 2 in May direct Calgary to Cancun.
That is more than double lasy year's cost. Insanity.

Sorry. I guess I'm spoiled here in Texas. But I wouldn't go to Mexico if airfare was $1400 per person. That's just insane.

I'm curious, what price would turn you away? Would you pay $2000 per person? $5000 per person? Everybody...what is your number?

By they way, I should state very proudly, we are willing to travel at odd times and through various stops to save three or four hundred dollars. I used my airline miles in October. On the way out we stopped in Pensacola, Miami, then Cancun. Direct flight on the way back. BUT, $148 for both of us RT.

Not a bad deal even with the baggage fees.

Looks like, for on line booking, bag fees for one carry on and one checked bag per person is $65 total.

I sure don't appreciate the way they hide the fee schedule on their web site.

http://www.spirit.com/OptionalFees.aspx

I do like the fact that the lavatory charges can be booked in advance cheaper and you can pay for each use or go for the all-inclusive package which includes both urination AND defecation.

Doug did you happen to check flights from Austin or San Antonio on Air Tran to Cancun ? These flights began last May. I don't know about the times or fares but that may be another option for you.

These flights will eventually be flown by Southwest.

One of the reasons the fares are higher is the cost of jet fuel keeps going up. Here at Southwest we are doing several things to offset the rising costs of the fuel. Raising the fares is always the last option but sometimes it can't be avoided. If Southwest is forced to raise fares it's a small increase compared to other airlines.

DungSR,  We also live in DFW.  I always just shoot for the best price, I don't have a 'number' (yet anyway).  I have flown Spirit, and of course I love to fly direct.  I recently saw the news story where Spirit was charging for carry on:  Rediculous.  I dunno.  Maybe I will like it if I don't have to wait for so many people struggling with their bags, since that was the reason Spirit gave (delay loading and unloading with more carry on).

The thing that stinks, is that airfare is the one thing you cannot get around for vacation.  I have often theorized that I could get by with no food or little food as long as I could be on the beach on vacation.  If you price travelling to a beach within the contiguous US, it is astronomical from a cost perspective even if you drive.

To be honest, I can't get by with any less room on the aircraft.  It is getting rediculous, both of us tall at 5'10 myself and hubby is 6'5".....it is nearly unbearable as it is now.  Especially when people slam their seatbacks against my knees and the person next to you on the only armrest/s.  Getting on my freakin nerves.

I think it's pretty shameful that airlines hide fees. But in the end, the bottom line is the bottom line. If I can save a $100 on one airline carrier vs another, that's all that matters. If I have to pay to use the bathroom, that's fine. If I have to pay for beer, that's fine too. As long as the end price is superior.

It's like when I took Viva Aerobus from Austin to Cancun for $9.99 each way. Yes, I had to drive to Austin, spend the night with my brother and yes it came out to $146 RT in the end. But I got where I wanted to go and saved $200 per person.

I flew VA 3 times out of Austin, it was great. VA has moved to San Antonio, but no direct flights to CUN. Looked at their price two weeks ago, but they were higher than a direct flight out of DFW.

I've found some fares nonstop out of SFO for around $450 for next spring. In fact the trip we had to cancel cost us close to $1100. Now I can book the exact same flight for $950. This is non stop on Virgin. There are other fares from here in the 380-425 range but the layover and late night flights don't make that much of a bargain. The flight we had left here at 8am and we landed at just after 3pm. We're going to try and go in March/April now.

I'm still curious what your maximum price is. Would you pay $1000 per person? $2000 per person. I'd be somewhere much more exotic for that much. Just curious. I think my max would be around $600 per person.

For me, when Delta was the only non-stop show in town, the price hovered around $600RT and I wouldnt pay it.
I flew through Charlotte or where ever to save a few hundred each ticket. Now with Airtran in town, it's under $350 consistently.

I have flown Spirit many times. People love to hate them, but they can be dirt cheap, even factoring in the baggage fees.
Inside the plane is the same as delta and airtran.

You may need to join the $9 club to get the cheap fares, but you can sign up for a short term and cancel.

If I lived in the west coast I would learn to love Hawaii. Not that it would take much learning. But I understand people's love for Mexico.

I'm in the same range as DSR, but only for a non-stop daytime flight. If it goes much over $600 I'd consider driving. That's on the long range radar anyway.

I'm only 1 person flying.  From Springfield MO there is NO non stop.  It AA thru Dallas or delta thru Atlanta.  been flying Delta since they bought out Northwest.  Its holding at 518.00 for May.  Piad 502.00 last May.   However I did steal a flight at 332.00 for this past fall 10-28 trip.  They have deals if you watch.  Our cheap charters anywhere close have folded.  I can drive to various airports buts its usually not worth it.

Yeah, be very careful with Spirit. Their fees are a hidden surprise that bounces up on you at the airport like a Jack-In-The-Box. Found that out the hard way flying with them to Vegas. Once you factor their "fees" back in, you've really not saved much money.

Sorry to hear that Sun Country has succumbed. I really liked them as well. First time I flew with them to CUN was last year, and I was pretty impressed.

And, yet, what if the fare was $605, Dong?

WAY too many factors here, Homey.

But, yes, $600 for me would be a good place to shut'r down.

Probably travel to places inside the US or Canada. I still have much to see in the NW.

I think I can get close to the French Polynesia for $1400.

You have not truly lived a full life if you have not been to Sunnyside, WA.

Why, just a visit to the alpaca farm in Prosser or the Toppenish Mural Tour would do you in for sure.

Most of the places I go (from DFW) where Spirit competes with AA, it seems like after I add back the baggage fees, the prices are close enough to push me to AA - if for no other reason than where Spirit has a single flight or maybe two, AA has many - so if AA runs into a mechanical issue that cancels my flight, I have options. It also helps that I'm Gold on AA so I get a mileage bump.

All of the fees from all of the airlines are a PITA, and a very obvious way to squeeze more revenue from travelers - bottom line, it's the TOTAL cost to get there and back - including the time it takes to get there (directs versus multiple connections). I see the flights as a commodity - all things being equal, I go with the least expensive.

At some point, though, I'd like to see all of the airlines adopt a universal policy about seating the people that take up their seat and part of mine - yeah, I guess ya could say that I'm heartless and insensitive when it comes to that, but it really bothers me when I pay for a seat, and I have to share my seat with an overweight person ("May I have a seat belt extender, please") in the seat next to me for 4 hours. In a perfect world, right next to the bag sizer at the gate where they insure that carry on bags meet the size constraints, ther would be an a$$ and shoulder sizer that insures that each passenger fits completely into the space that they paid for - or they buy two seats - seems simple enough to me.

The smart ones would buy two seats in advance to save themselves the embarrassment of a public sizing.

I don't want to seem heartless, either but agree with you here.  Although I am tall (and my husband, as well)....I am slim and I do have back problems.  It causes me constant pain to have to sit in the ever shrinking seats, coupled with the persons in the seats around me 'spreading' out.  Yes, I do feel that bigger persons should pay for 2 seats OR pay extra for seats with more room, etc.  I do not, however, feel this is an excuse for airlines to contstantly shrink the seat spaces in order to eeeek out more total seats (which is my understanding they have done)....as well, I notice a huge difference in the space I have versus 10 years ago.  So, now you pay more $ and get less space...I feel crushed, physically.

I can't say how many times I am the one who doesn't get an armrest because the people on both sides of me take it and when the people around me slam their seatbacks into me and then throw in the extra SMACK...it is frustrating.  I am NOT big and I should not have to pay more to have a normal amount of space on the aircraft.

I also wonder about people (with regards to Spirit charging for carry on, now)  who can't seem to get their luggage in and out of the overhead compartments and truly delay loading and unloading....standing there helpless, even asking other people to help them with it.  That is another issue, because if you cannot manage your own luggage you need to check it.

It is a shock to me how many people stand their clueless and lost during loading and unloading of most aircraft.  They simply do not move.  I wonder, how would everyone get off this plane if there was an emergency.
