Doug did you happen to check flights from Austin or San Antonio on Air Tran to Cancun ? These flights began last May. I don't know about the times or fares but that may be another option for you. These flights will eventually be flown by Southwest. One of the reasons the fares are higher is the cost of jet fuel keeps going up. Here at Southwest we are doing several things to offset the rising costs of the fuel. Raising the fares is always the last option but sometimes it can't be avoided. If Southwest is forced to raise fares it's a small increase compared to other airlines.

ORIGINAL: Tomas Not a bad deal even with the baggage fees. Looks like, for on line booking, bag fees for one carry on and one checked bag per person is $65 total. I sure don't appreciate the way they hide the fee schedule on their web site. http://www.spirit.com/OptionalFees.aspx I do like the fact that the lavatory charges can be booked in advance cheaper and you can pay for each use or go for the all-inclusive package which includes both urination AND defecation. Is someone stationed outside the lavatory charging for the TP?? or is that included

I flew VA 3 times out of Austin, it was great. VA has moved to San Antonio, but no direct flights to CUN. Looked at their price two weeks ago, but they were higher than a direct flight out of DFW.

I've found some fares nonstop out of SFO for around $450 for next spring. In fact the trip we had to cancel cost us close to $1100. Now I can book the exact same flight for $950. This is non stop on Virgin. There are other fares from here in the 380-425 range but the layover and late night flights don't make that much of a bargain. The flight we had left here at 8am and we landed at just after 3pm. We're going to try and go in March/April now.

I'm still curious what your maximum price is. For me, when Delta was the only non-stop show in town, the price hovered around $600RT and I wouldnt pay it. I flew through Charlotte or where ever to save a few hundred each ticket. Now with Airtran in town, it's under $350 consistently. I have flown Spirit many times. People love to hate them, but they can be dirt cheap, even factoring in the baggage fees. Inside the plane is the same as delta and airtran. You may need to join the $9 club to get the cheap fares, but you can sign up for a short term and cancel. If I lived in the west coast I would learn to love Hawaii. Not that it would take much learning. But I understand people's love for Mexico.

Yeah, be very careful with Spirit. Their fees are a hidden surprise that bounces up on you at the airport like a Jack-In-The-Box. Found that out the hard way flying with them to Vegas. Once you factor their "fees" back in, you've really not saved much money. Sorry to hear that Sun Country has succumbed. I really liked them as well. First time I flew with them to CUN was last year, and I was pretty impressed.

Most of the places I go (from DFW) where Spirit competes with AA, it seems like after I add back the baggage fees, the prices are close enough to push me to AA - if for no other reason than where Spirit has a single flight or maybe two, AA has many - so if AA runs into a mechanical issue that cancels my flight, I have options. It also helps that I'm Gold on AA so I get a mileage bump. All of the fees from all of the airlines are a PITA, and a very obvious way to squeeze more revenue from travelers - bottom line, it's the TOTAL cost to get there and back - including the time it takes to get there (directs versus multiple connections). I see the flights as a commodity - all things being equal, I go with the least expensive. At some point, though, I'd like to see all of the airlines adopt a universal policy about seating the people that take up their seat and part of mine - yeah, I guess ya could say that I'm heartless and insensitive when it comes to that, but it really bothers me when I pay for a seat, and I have to share my seat with an overweight person ("May I have a seat belt extender, please") in the seat next to me for 4 hours. In a perfect world, right next to the bag sizer at the gate where they insure that carry on bags meet the size constraints, ther would be an a$$ and shoulder sizer that insures that each passenger fits completely into the space that they paid for - or they buy two seats - seems simple enough to me. The smart ones would buy two seats in advance to save themselves the embarrassment of a public sizing.

I don't want to seem heartless, either but agree with you here. Although I am tall (and my husband, as well)....I am slim and I do have back problems. It causes me constant pain to have to sit in the ever shrinking seats, coupled with the persons in the seats around me 'spreading' out. Yes, I do feel that bigger persons should pay for 2 seats OR pay extra for seats with more room, etc. I do not, however, feel this is an excuse for airlines to contstantly shrink the seat spaces in order to eeeek out more total seats (which is my understanding they have done)....as well, I notice a huge difference in the space I have versus 10 years ago. So, now you pay more $ and get less space...I feel crushed, physically. I can't say how many times I am the one who doesn't get an armrest because the people on both sides of me take it and when the people around me slam their seatbacks into me and then throw in the extra SMACK...it is frustrating. I am NOT big and I should not have to pay more to have a normal amount of space on the aircraft. I also wonder about people (with regards to Spirit charging for carry on, now) who can't seem to get their luggage in and out of the overhead compartments and truly delay loading and unloading....standing there helpless, even asking other people to help them with it. That is another issue, because if you cannot manage your own luggage you need to check it. It is a shock to me how many people stand their clueless and lost during loading and unloading of most aircraft. They simply do not move. I wonder, how would everyone get off this plane if there was an emergency. quote:
