Today two of them, tomorrow a couple more and pretty soon you have the same multiplied destruction the herds of imported snorklers are doing. Jet skis have no place in Akumal Bay. It takes experience and skill to manuever through the break in the reef to get the fishing boats in. This is ridiculous.

Easy folks. Remember we had this scare up at HMB a few years back. Anybody know where they're from?

Why can't they just take a taxi or colectivo like everyone else who does not stay in Akumal but wants to visit? Hopefully next time someone will wade or swim out and remove the distributor caps or whatever jet skis have.

quote:
ORIGINAL: UTpowhnd On the surface it seems like a bad situation, but if they coasted in the boat lane at wakeless speed and parked to eat or snorkel and coast out at wakeless speed they wouldn't cause any more distrubance than any of the other boats coming and going. The problem and dangerous situation would be if they were out in the bay playing above wakeless speeds. IMHO, UTpowhnd posted a sensible reaction, especially seeing that there has been no evidence of maliciousness or wrong-doing at this point in time. But really folks... quote:
ORIGINAL: Tomas I'm gonna have to say I still think it's a bad idea. The boat drivers in Akumal Bay are respectful and responsible. I've never had a close call while snorkeling. A bunch of alcohol-fueled boneheads on wave runners from Grand Serenis coming into the bay? Not so cool. I've seen the way the turtles react to watercraft and I'm pretty sure it would be a bad idea. C,mon, Tom. Isn't that the knee-jerk, "all those crazy young'uns!!!" cantankerous, old fart attitude we SWORE would never happen to us? "Bunch of lcohol-fueled boneheads" is painting with a pretty broad brush... quote:

Hopefully next time someone will wade or swim out and remove the distributor caps or whatever jet skis have. And actually condoning vandalism - which is also a crime in Mexico as it is here?!?! Mexican jail time isn't the way I would prefer to spend my vacation. Being a responsible boater/skier, I'm not the biggest fan of PWCs or many of their operators, but they do have certain rights like anyone else. I also don't know what the "official" rules are concerning their presence in the bay, but you all sound like a hysterical lynch mob lighting your torches and grabbing your pitchforks. In all seriousness, and as long as we're pointing fingers... - First reports sound like the PWCs were operated responsibly, even if most of us do prefer them to be miles away from Akumal Bay. - The majority of the pangas in the bay (and their number grow every year) are still sporting 2-stroke engines - HUGE polluters, especially at wakeless speeds. - The PWCs are also have 2-stroke engines, but with much less displacement. - The PWCs are also jet driven vs. the propellers on the pangas - and have much less draft. Seems to me that would mitigate the damage IF operated resopnsibly. - And don't even get me started on all the other problems (septic systems, run-off, etc) that all the humanity has caused. Snow
