Confession - I don't have a trip report yet. We've been back a month and I think every single day "This is the day I'm going to start my trip report" but despite the best intentions I haven't done it yet. So maybe if I take it piece by piece it will help me get started. We had such a great trip and tried so many new places that I hate not to at least get the basics out there and a few pics!

Anyway, feel free to give me a hard time! Or if you are about to head to Bacalar or Mahahual feel free to ask questions!

I will start with the parts that don't require pictures.

Rental car - we went with Cancun/Carribean Rent A Car this time. We've used them and Easyway both. I had a (slight) preference for Cancun over Easyway because (in my experience anyway) Cancun had been a little more professional. When we arrive and walk outside the terminal it took us a while to find our rep. When we did, he said "Five more minutes, please wait." Sure, no problem. What's five minutes right? Fifteen minutes go by, it's insanely hot, we aren't in the shade, we are just standing in the sun, waiting. So I ask the guy again and he says "I'm trying to do my job - please wait 5 more minutes." OOooohkay then. Fifteen more minutes go by - if he had just leveled with me in the first place, we could have sat in the shade at Berryhill and ordered a cerveza and chilled, but now we've been standing in the sun for 30 minutes. Time passes and I tell him I'm calling the office myself - he gets on the phone and a van appears. A PACKED van for another rental car company. I was somewhat concerned that this was the old rental car switcheroo - so we hem and haw a little and now that this has been going on for almost an hour at this point I don't care WHO the car comes from just get me out of here. There is only one seat in the van, next to the driver. My husbands sits there and I sit on the console between the driver and my husband. Every turn sends me into either one of their laps, which was funny at first! Finally he does indeed arrive at Cancun/Carribean and after a 20 minute wait in line we get our car which is bigger and nicer than the one I had reserved, the AC works great and it has one functioning speaker. All is well and we are on the road finally! Going forward I'll continue to use Cancun or Easyway with price being the deciding point.

We have 10 days in Mexico for our trip, but no reservations for the first four nights. We know we want to spend one night in Akumal and then head south to see new areas. I was hoping that no reservations might mean getting some good deals, but that wasn't necessarily the case.

Great start, looking forward to hearing more. Not sure where you stayed but during stays at Hotel Akumal Caribe, the posted prices are always higher than booking thru LG. A couple of times we have done a walkup due to having days left over after visiting other places.

Our one week rental in Akumal was through LG but we just wanted to play it by ear the first four days. I did email HAC the day before we left and asked if they had any specials and they responded with their posted rates.

Arriving on vacation on a Wednesday is nice - airport was uncrowded, lines were shorter, and there was little to no traffic on 307 so we got to Akumal in no time. Upon arrival we went straight to Lol Ha for our standard first day meal - cervezas and ceviche mixto at the bar. Delicious as always. Not crazy about the loud, thumping Europop music they blare from the radio at the bar these days though. After eating we head down to Vista Del Mar to see what they have available for a place to stay. Front desk shows us a hotel room and a studio condo and offers us the standard posted rates. Nothing wrong with the place or the price, but we continue down the road to visit our old favorite Playa Caribe condos. We stop and speak to Augustine and he graciously sets us up in unit 12 for the night. Beginning the next day Playa Caribe is closed for a week for maintenance and repairs so we get a slight discount and a lovely the view. So glad to be back - I head straight to my lounger on the bay.

Ok I just want to stop here and let everyone know that I googled "how to resize photos on photobucket" and the best answer was on a website called My Little Pony Trading Post. Pretty funny.

Now why do I have those extra "image" things next to the pic?

I use to use Photobucket all the time and this last time I was on it I couldn't figure it out at all when I tried to resize! For some reason those little "image" things were always in my last trip report too.

Kath - yay so far so good. Except for the car rental thing.

Are you using the Direct Link image in PB to paste to here? Try that. Also 640 x 480 is a great size for posting here.

Thanks looking forward to more of your adventures south

I will try your direct link suggestion Kwing! The pool at Playa Caribe.

Yes - that worked nicely thanks! Fixed the other pic too.

Nice! Can you tell me if the pool at Playa Caribe has a swim ladder or better yet, swim steps with a handrail? I cannot tell from your picture. Thank you so much, am really enjoying your report.

Considering the Casitas if I cannot get a good sale price at the ABR.

Steps at Playa Caribe pool, but very shallow and you could safely get in without the handrail because they are long and shallow.

Great report!!!

Thanks Maggie and crunch, I have mobility issues and have to use a cane outside of my apartment, so sounds like the steps are shallow, which would be fine
