Hola
We will be visiting Riviera Maya for 10 days in December.
We are staying at Barcelo Maya Colonial, which has pretty good snorkeling
We would like to take a cab one morning to snorkel off the beach in Akumal and spend the morning snorkeling and dining, drinking around lunch time.
What is the best location to enter the snorkeling from the beach.?
Which dive shop has lockers?
Best restuarant suggestions for lunch any price?
Gracial to all you Loco Gringos!

It's all good there. Sometimes we walk from ABR and enter near the wall at the casitas, from there an easy snorkel out to the cannons, lots of fish to see there, then out to the reef break.
Plenty of eats to choose from, Lol Ha for food or booze, the Loncheria near the Super Chomack or Imeldas behind CEA for authentic local cuisine, Cueva, Turtle Bay. Browse the forum, you'll get great advice!

All the restaurants there are pretty good, personally I prefer the Lol-Ha for lunch and toes in the sand dining, and eat dinner at Cueva's or someplace else. La Buena Vida on Half Moon Bay just north of there is also pretty good, great views, bit of a hike, or you could rent a bike or two, or golf cart rental is available at Mexicarte just inside the arches, next to Hotel Akumal Caribe reception. In fact, why not spend the day and also visit Yal-Ku lagoon and maybe Half Moon Bay if not too rough or windy (can get currents) and then Akumal. Easy enough to get a taxi back just outside the arches is a taxi stand.

We like stooping to rent golf cart for 1/2 day getting there around 8am or so. We take a slow ride back to Yal Ku Lagoon and snorklenthere 1st. We then like stooping at Half Moon Bay & then take the cart back & head over by Loo Hop & rent. Ouplenof beach chairs for remainder of the day. We usually have lunch right at Lol Hol where there are lockers. You can snorkle right out from there. Really makes for a nice day.

The Turtle Preserve right in front of Lol Ha is a good place to start. Then walk down the beach to the the area in front of ABR's pool and work your way out. Lots of reef, and all kinds of fish, just move slow, sometimes the surf raises the sand enough to reduce visibility. I've seen large grouper, all kinds of reef fish, and one barracuda that made me glad my wife had headed back early. Hands down the best snorkeling I've done anywhere. Hoping to introduce my granddaughter to the underwater world there next year.

Last week we always found turtles straight out from Lol Ha and straigh tout from the Moonrise bar at ABR and in between. There were lots of turtles!

I see a lot of light blue in the map that Tortuga Tom posted. Is it shallow in all of those areas? How deep does it get in the bay?

The light color is just sandy bottom as opposed to the dark areas being either turtle grass (where the turtles eat) or reef. You may see turtles anywhere in the bay but if they are in the sandy areas they are usually just passing through. The deepest parts of the bay are probably not over 15 feet and most of it is much shallower than that.

Here is another view of where the turtles are. Be sure to drag the scroll bar at the bottom of the photo to see the entire panorama.

Here is another cool view of the sunrise in Akumal. If you view it in Internet Explorer you can also hear the morning birds.

Thanks Whale. Great to view this. Makes one want to be there. Bird sounds really enhance the viewing
