This afternoon my wife got a horrible message from Timhy saying that ABR is either taking down or already took down the palapas by Moonrise and that Moonrise is next up on the chopping block?

Can anyone confirm this?

W T F are they thinking?????????

It's looking like everything north of the last two or three rooms of building three is slated for demolition. Something new will replace buildings 1 & 2. Conflicting stories abound, but it sounds like there's been some new investors/buyers who will be replacing the old with the new. Who knows what it will look like once they are done? I'm sure something will take the place of the Moonrise someday. When we were there last week it looked as though they are erecting a fence along building three, probably to keep eveyone out of the way. It doesn't look as though there will be a mega resort going in, our biggest fear. The place is falling apart, this should be a good thing though you may be looking at prices similar to the Eldorado once all is said and done. It is the most fantastic piece of real estate on that coast and anyone with money can see a way to make more of it. I love the place as is but I can't see them turning down a much needed cash infusion.

I did talk to Renato again before we left the ABR, he indicated that there will definitely be some reincarnation of the Moonrise Bar in the future, but plans are still not finalized. He indicated that there will be some sort of temporary replacement for it, probably near the current snack bar area.

Renato also said that they are in close consultation with CEA regarding the new sewage treatment system and this will determine how many rooms they will be building.
Also, all water used at the ABR currently goes through a reverse osmosis system, but because the water travels from the RO plant to old storage tanks and then through old supply lines, it is still considered to be "contaminated". They hope that eventually they'll have enough funds to completely replace these tanks and lines so that the tap water will be drinkable.

One of the bartenders at the Moonrise told us that he was concerned about his future employment once the current Moonrise is torn down and when I asked Renato about this, he just laughed and said of course they were going to keep those people employed during the demolition and eventual construction phases.

The Moonrise is still standing but 2 of 3 palapas were moved in front of bldg 4.

We said goodbye to the Moonrise yesterday as it will likely be down in the few weeks to come

The Fence posts Barrata talked about also encirle the empty lot to the north right by the HAC pool - now I know why the Buddha massage hut moved to the Arches

Timmhy and Manual will have their jobs but to one of the other bars

We have heard rumours as to who the other party is - perhaps the one that owned the empty lot?? - I say no more

I'm thinking why not relocate to the old exisiting bar in the Italian restaraunt, that way the peeps who like to hang out at the north end of the property will have a bar close to that area, plus the bar is already there so they wouldn't have to build anything. Or is that building coming down to??
So sad to hear of the demise of a place so loved by so many, but also at the same time it's exciting to see ABR finally updating itself.

Could pose a bit of a challenge to run the Silent Auction next spring if that the whole area is gone and under construction.

Dog did you get some final pictures?

Where will headquarters be? Will the hot water shower come back?

I want a 5 foot square piece of the floor from around the old pool.

So many memories since 2003.

Change is good as long as it is for the better.

Sad to see one of my favorite places anywhere going away.

Countless hours of good times and good friends there.

Yes, Jorge was quite proud of those delicious lunches.

But then Jorge is also gone.....

I think the old Mexican and Italian restaurants are coming down as well, but I don't know for sure. I want those star lamps from the Italian place!

I would assume the old dive shop will also come down. Where will they outfit the hordes of snorkelers that come in? Could the bay be getting a break for a while?

While that would be ideal, we both know they are just setting up for MORE tour groups. While we all would like to see things stay the same down there big changes are coming to that area. The southern creep continues. Things change all around us, it's just more obvious in a place like this. We'll still continue to search out pieces of paradise.
You may have to relocate and continue the outstanding work you've been doing.

I know, Neal. I'm just desperately searching for a positive in this. Thanks for raining on my tortillas.

Oh, our palapa is gone...sob

I know they will do whatever they choose with the place, but, I will be sad to see that old Italian restaurant go. There's a bit of romance in that old building.

Also, at some point the Moonrise Bar we be demolished, to be replaced in some form in the future. Renato said an efforrt will be made to save all of the signs at the bar, except tor those so deteriorated that it will be difficult to remove them without destroying them.

Wow... of all the things that needed upgrading on the ABR property, it certainly wasn't the Moonrise or the north-end palapas. There were definitely a few old buildings on the north end that needed to be demo'd and the sewage system could definitely use an upgrade. But the Moonrise had an iconic "old Akumal" feel to it that's irreplaceable.

Trying to relocate it to the old Italian restaurant will never work. The attractive aspect was walking up to a bar, hanging out and chilling while you're still on the beach.
