Where ya from? Ever driven in a big city? That's what it is like here. Pay attention and don't speed. Pretty simple.

What it said was "why you don't want to have an accident". I completely agree with that and take proper precautions. I read the article and I didn't really see where they said don't rent. All they said was make sure you have insurance. Same thing most of us here would advise anyone. The place we rent from (cancun) has an all inclusive insurance policy included in all of their quotes. Anyone who doesn't take complete insurance is a fool. ( I know they don't cover the victims expenses so don't have an accident) We have rented cars every time we have been in the Yucatan. Last trip we had one for 26 days and drove over 2000 kilometers all over the peninsula. We were planning on renting a car in Cancun and driving to Belize and Guatemala in January and February. (Had the car reserved, the flight paid for and the casita almost totally paid for) You need to get the proper insurance for each country but I was really looking forward to it until I screwed up my arm and can't get the surgery done until late Dec. Looks like we will have to do it in March or April or May. We'll see but we are still going to take the trip. I couldn't do the trip without a car. I love the beach but I used to go to the beach even before I went to school all though junior and senior high school. Where I grew up the beach was just part of our lives. While I love the beach in Mexico it is not the only reason we go there. We love to travel to out of the way places and small towns and meet the people and just hang out. Seeing the real Mexico is impossible without traveling through the countryside.

Agree you have to do what is right for you. Personally I have driven all over down there and rented every time (last two times a friend had a car and I paid my share of the rent and gas) and driven all over with no problems. Do some research on this guy, this story has been on the Internet for at least a year and a half, he is a pastor and was clearly at fault, and if I remember correctly did not have his papers on him. He is very bitter and he, his family and some of his parishioners have been spreading this story all over the Internet wherever they get a chance. Now there are places I would not rent, such as Mexico City (and I am from the LA area and used to traffic) but it is a judgment call on your part.

I have been renting vehicles and driving in Mexico for 27years but I no longer rent. I have had my own vehicle down there for the last 5 or 6 years. I have never come close to having an accident. When on Cozumel I never drive over 35 mph as there is no need to. You do have to watch out for the motos and bicycles. On the mainland there really isn't that much traffic unless you are in a tourist area and that is just on the main streets. Just go slow and watch what you are doing. You'll be fine. I don't see how you can get into a high speed crash and really hurt someone. A fender bender might happen but the isurance will cover that. If you hit someone on a moto or bicycle make sure to back up and run over them again. It's cheaper. LOL The story you read is a couple of years old. I know the spot where the accident occured and there is no way if you were paying attention and driving slow that it should have happened. According to my insurance policy, any fees or fines ordered by the court to be paid to the injured party will be paid by them. That includes lost wages. Make sure you purchase the extra insurance. It will double the price of the rental car but is worth it.

Since this came from Frommers, who writes travel guides and publishes a monthly magazine, I assumed the information was reliable but wanted opinions from those who have driven often in Mexico. We're not from a large city, but do drive throughout the US in and out of cities and have rented cars often in major European cities. The two times we've rented cars in Mexico we have taken out full insurance and had no problems at all while thoroughly enjoying our driving experience. But, jail time while settling wage reimbursement is an altogether different issue. My brother, who speaks fluent Spanish, and has driven all over the Yucatan, Belize and Guatemala is going to check out the Mexican law regarding wage reimbursement. No one plans to have an accident, at home or while traveling, and the suggestions about having full documentation and important contact numbers readily available are appreciated. Thanks to all who posted comments regarding this article. We're only 3 weeks away from sun, fun, sand, snorkeling and cervesas in Akumal.
