It's always a good idea not to leave anything valuable on the beach.... other than a towel, hat and sunscreen ( things you need) I would not leave anything else there. We also have found it a great idea to make some new friends, go to the beach together and take turns going in and watching each others things if you want to take more with you (camera, some money, etc.)

What things are we talking about . If you're not driving , leave your wallet in your room safe . If you're driving leave your license in the ashtray and your wallet in the room safe . Buy a Bathing suit with a velcro or zipped pocket and have a heavy duty baggie or commercial product for cash . Wet money is commonly accepted , happily . Watch that you don't hand out extra stuck wet bills . I did this on main street in Tulum to the liquor vendor with the free samples and he kindly returned it to me , a little Pemex Reverso if you will . I already really liked the guy with the free shots and all and then some blatant ethical honesty . Yah mon ! Bring old towels that nobody will covet . Bring a selection of small sized creams and lotions , so no big loss for any one . A waterproof camera takes care of that problem but a land camera can be tougher . We always rent cheap cars but a fancier car might have a fancy chipped key that can react poorly to submersion and can actually cost alot without any padding by your renter . I buy dollar store sunglasses if we know we will be leaving things on display and switch for good ones as needed . I bring old cheap flip flops for beach leaving , wives have their own views on shoes and don't go there amigo . If there was a watchful thief out there , a lot of bling or earphones for Ipods or waving your telephoto lens around might twig their radar or trendy brandnames plastered all over everything you own . I know Winipeggers are ice cold cool but tone it down a hair with your beach gear . We are in the habit of "snapping " our picnic (k)napsack to a chair leg or something else to slow down a snatch and grab job . I've read of backpackers having a bike cable lock for their more important sole source of supplies . We bring an old synthetic fabric shower curtain , very light and compact as a beach blanket , again no Mickey Mouse or anything vaguely desirable to thiefs . We've had one mask go missing in 25 trips and this was likely by accident by another tourist whose gear was heaped near ours . A well tipped waiter has a long memory and your best interests at heart , so there's a friend on your side as well . We end up trusting a lot but if you had presription meds or prescription glasses that you would suffer greatly without , entrust them to a beach mate or waiter or as you say , take turns .

I was at the nude beach one time, and two girls there went in for a swim, leaving backpacks on the beach. I saw a kid of about 12, dash out of the jungle, grab their backpacks, and dash back into the bush. I was too far away to do anything. He had left their clothes, and I gave them some money so they could get a taxi back to their hotel. I have never since left my things unattended.

When I was in the Navy back in the 80`s,while in Mazatlan one of my shipmates decided to go for a swim on the way back to the ship. It was night time so he went in with just his underwear( bit of alcohol involved), same deal ,a kid come from nowhere and took all of his clothes. So they are not even safe 1

Make friends with others nearby and offer to watch their stuff if they will watch yours, or take turns. I only take a little bit of money, enough for lunch and a Coke, plus lotion, towel, etc.

I often snorkel alone, and only bring what i can do without and take my chances. Money and any keys i need are in my bathing suit, camera on my wrist and every thing else is lying on the beach. If it is stolen I wont worry about it, i am here to enjoy the moment so i dont worry about my STUFF it can be replaced.

I want to get one of the KYSS bags for the beach.  Basically, it has a cable lock attached that locks the zipper and can be anchored to a tree, chair, etc. so nobody can snatch and run.  They're cute, too!  We still don't plan on leaving anything of value in it, but it should help protect the bag itself and the few things we do have on the beach (lord forbid I'm in the middle of a good book and lose it!).

My wife and I always stay in Tulum. Love the place! It is very safe! Actually safer than most "small" towns in the USA. Don't worry. Just have fun!

Get a vacation vault. Big enough to hold small camera, phones, wallet, keys, glasses, etc. We find a small palm tree or beach chair and lock up!

Get one of those Pelican (brand) waterproof boxes, big enough to carry key money etc. You can find them at REI or other places...
When you're in the water, you can wrap around your neck inside shirt, keep around your wrist, or put in large pocket on your (male) bathing suit w/velcro, depending on what you're comfortable with doing. Personally, wouldn't put iphone in one, but other things that can get a little wet, just in case.... :)

Since I mentioned the KYSS bag in my earlier post, thought I'd follow up. I got an email today for 20% off KYSS bags for their Cyber Monday sale! That made it only $35.96 with free shipping! Woohoo, glad I waited. :)

So if anybody is contemplating ordering, the promo code is: CYBERKYSS (all caps).

We always try to find a private 'spot' further down the beach, away from the crowds; and we are willing to walk as far as we have to.  That being said, no matter where we stay there always seems to be a path back behind the initial shrubbery/jungle that I am aware of.  What I have always done and never had anyone even remotely attempt to take our stuff is:  The ugliest or plainest tote I have with the minimum stuff is what I take to the beach.  My hubby tends to want to take his creature comforts like his ipod and ipad; but I think he has learned from a few hard rain showers we got caught in not to do that too much.  I take the handle of my tote and tie it to the beach towel from the resort (which we always take on our furthest walks, no problem).  Then, I put one flip flop on each corner and my sunscreen on top of it.  I orient the bag I tied to the towel on top of the towel.  The end result, is no one is gonna grab and go.  They would be tangled up long enough to feel my wrath, as myself and my hubby are both athletic and we take turns facing the shore.  I also don't 'swim' so I can't go in far enough not to get out somewhat quickly AND I give people the evil eye when necessary

For me, the bottom line is, you can't put your stuff down in the US and expect it to be there when you get back....so why would I do it on vacation.  There are people who target tourists in every situation. I still have a blast and don't stress about it too much.

We got a blue water tight bag from penney's luggage area that worked perfectly this last trip and we put our money and stuff in that when we snorkel.

Finally something that worked. It is made by eta and is called a "waterproof pouch". It was $8 over in the travel section at JC Penney. This pouch has a double seal plus a fold over and snap feature that gives your contents triple protection. I was unable to find this product on eta's website but they still do have them at JC Penney.

I liked it so much I went back to buy a couple more. They were on clearance for $5 each so I bought four of them.
