We have visited Punta Allen 14 years ago and are now looking for similar accommodations (fishermen village, simple cabins near the beach, good food, remoteness and also access to some bird nesting islands by the boat). Is the venue with cabins in Punta Allen still operating? How would one contact them? How is the road? Elsewhere we read about the repairs, but then also degradation due to storms. Are there similar rustic accommodations closer to Tulum, where we could avoid the worse of this road? I looked up CESIAK (Ecology Center in Sian Kaan) but sadly, it is booked up... We will be visiting around the time of Christmas/New Year and thought that going rustic/remote will spare us the holiday crowds... but also just want to experience more Nature than built environment. Looking around, we find most of places which we would like and could afford booked already! What are our options then? Would bringing one's own tents and setting camp anywhere near Sian Kaan/Tulum/Akumal be possible? Access to restroom/shower would be desirable. Alternatively, we are also considering area near Chetumal, like Xcalak, but read about devastation from the storm there too, loss of good places to eat, etc. Please advise! thanks.

Xamach Dos is about 25k into the biosphere. You'd love it there. Also, I might add, they recently graded and tamped the road and its great. If you want to actually stay in Tulum, DiamanteK, Coco Tulum and Zazil Kin might be worth checking out but we're talking sand floors and shared bathrooms in some instances.
