We stayed at the Oasis Akumal for the first time in 1987 and have gone back 3-4 times, last time was around 10 years ago. The oceanfront rooms that are currently available are the old condos behind the beach pool. The old oceanfront hotel rooms near the pier have been torn down and are being replaced by white, stark rooms with huge windows and hot tubs. They say they will be open by Dec15 but I am doubtful they will be done by then. Anyway, our room was large, on the beach, marble floors, good airconditioning, free minibar, nice dresser, new pillowtop mattresses and soft pillows, no moldy smell, new 42' flat screen tv, amenities -shampoo, body gel, lotion etc. Since these rooms are original and hadn't been used for months, we did experience several problems with plumbing and tv connection that were fixed fairly quickly. This resort is very international with Italians, Germans, French, Asian, and many other countries so it is an achievement to keep everyone happy. They certainly are trying.

The beach is one of the nicest but can't compare to Akumal Bay - nothing can. The sand was eroded so there was a 3 foot drop to the water - no big deal. There is coral rubble for the first 3 feet, then alot of rock so always wear reef shoes. The coral rubble is pretty eroded so it's not a big deal. There are hundreds of sea urchins farther out so watch your step if you must stand. There were 3 people 3 days in a row that stepped on sea urchins and that is a pain that will linger. The urchins are displacing the fish's hiding places in the rocks. They weren't there on previous visits and I was told that the excess nutrients coming from the resort is attracting the sea urchins. This bay has been a coral graveyard since I can remember, but there are some nice formations with lots of fish. The best thing was being surrounded by 11 cuttlefish in perfect formation semicircle about a foot apart. Of course I didn't have my camera. Otherwise, there were lots of powder blue and royal blue tangs, a few parrotfish and the usual suspects. The clarity of the water was outstanding, probably 30 feet. There were 4 days where it was windy and rough so I gave up fighting the current and took a cab to Dos Ojos.

The food was good, typical fare, Mexican and Italian restaurants and Asian beach snack bar. There were less than 100 people at this time so there will be more restaurants and dishes added. The roving mariachi bands were very loud and invasive at lunch and dinner - I think they will tone down in time. My friends actually paid them to go away.

This trip we just chilled out on our nice padded loungers under papapas waiting for Guadalupe to bring us fruity drinks. Did go to Akumal twice, once to snorkel and see my turtles. Water clarity was not good and there had been no wind for several days previous. There are so many snorkel tours now give me a break!

Our second trip was for the Lol Ha get together on the 12th. I am so glad I got to meet some of you - what a lovely bunch of coconuts you are!

Have been told that they will go back to the old GORM name for the new fancy section with 7 restaurants, roof bar, infinity pool. etc. but will also keep the Oasis Tulum section - jungle and garden rooms, oceanfront condos with two price structures.

This resort is not for everyone but it is for us. When the remodeling is completed it will be awesome. Hope we can afford to go back.

Sounds a lot like they are going for the same set up they have in Cancun at the Grand Oasis there. Separating the room categories. We stayed there in 2006, and I remember how bad the urchins were then. The beach was great , but, entering the water was dicey. Truth be told, the buffet was smaller than ABR, but, had more variety. Good to hear it's working on improvements.

The Asian snack bar was advertised as a sushi bar when we were there. They had several varieties of fresh sushi and often a bowl of cold shrimp, but, not sure if that is what it still means.

There is a sushi bar by the back pool. There is the Asian snack bar by the beach. It has a great fish with coconut sauce, shrimp tempura(sp), veggie tempura, fried rice and other stuff I don't remember.

How much walking is involved if you are staying in one of the garden rooms? Is there a reef or just scattered coral for snorkling? We are trying to find an alternative to the ABR which is booked up for our next trip.
