Does anyone know if these ruins are open yet? We are really anxious to visit when they are. We were down at the Mayan Beach Garden in 2010 when they were still excavating...I tried to "goggle" for information updates but could not find anything.

Not new, but have you seen these two videos from 2011? http://haecceities.wordpress.com/2010/05/04/1674/

Thanks Whale...I have written to the university (archeological dept) for a permit to visit the site...I will see what happens...otherwise we might just head over there and see what's - what...and take our chances if someone will let us in for a look and some photos. I have heard the jungle is wonderful in that area and it would be exciting to see the dig going on.

From what I've read and seen lately there will be many more sites uncovered in the central and north eastern Yucatan. Most of these were just never thought of as being in the right place for Mayan cities but they migrated east and you can bet that many of the mounds and things that just don't seem to be in the right place will reveal more sites. We've done a lot of traveling off the beaten path and have seen a number of unexcavated sites. In many small towns you can ask the locals and they will usually know of places that haven't been touched yet (at least recently).

That's a great link! Thank you soo much!

here is a link to Mayan Beach Garden's (we've stayed here) site where she has an interactive ruins map which is very good:http://www.mayanbeachgarden.com/mapYucatan.html

Ichkabal is west of Bacalar near the site of the ruins at Dzibanche...it is a new dig. We ave travelled by car all over and gone by many intriguing mounds that you just know are more sites yet to be uncovered. Ichkabal is said to be another very huge and exciting city when it is all unearthed.
