I hope so. I am planning 7 nights at ABR and 4 nights at Ixchel Beach Resort in Isla Mujeres in February. Using USA Transfers for all ground transportation. Ultramar ferry from Puerto Juarez to Isla Mujeres. Sounds like Isla is very relaxing and a unique experience.

Many are doing 2 part vacations - we did 7 nights each (ABR and Isla)

If you are near Playa, take a taxi to the ferry (PJ), rent a golf cart for the day and have fun

You can also do the ADO from PDC to Cancun, then a short taxi

for years we broke up our trip the same way: 7 days of an AI in Akumal area and a few days on Isla Mujeres. We also stayed at the Ixchel and loved it compared to other placed we stayed. Always used USA transfer for all transfers and were very satisfied. Now we are spending a few days in Puerto Morelos our new love.
Enjoy!

The minute you get off the ferry, and start walking you will FEEL it.....guaranteed. We LOVED it there. Spent 5 nights at Posado Del Mar a couple of years ago...and would love to go back! Hildalgo street at night? (Way better than 5th in PDC as far as I'm concerned)....smaller and just more fun - less hawking of wares!

You can see the island in a day - easily!

I have been to Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, I think Isla Mujeres is way better.

And yes, it is worth going to. I found when I went years ago, it is cheaper and more fun going to the Island of Women on the public ferry rather than the one ferry closer to the resorts. Check it out. It is the ferry that the locals go on, cheap.

And lotsa great spots to eat on the island too. You can negotiate a good deal for a boat to snorkel with and get lunch. Way better than pre-booking. Fun times!! Also, it is great to eat just on the beach by the ferry too, great deals and you can actually watch a sunset as you eat there. Very nice!

Cheers!!

Doug

Splitting our trip this year too. First Isla Mujeres and then Akumal for the End of the World!

We really enjoy IM. Been there three times and stayed on the south end of the island and rented a golf cart. Great food and the sunsets are perfect.

just got back from 3 nights on Isla and a week in Akumal. It was my first time on Isla and I enjoyed it. Stayed at Nautibeach condos on the north side, great location. I love snorkeling and thought the islands snorkeling was good, Akumal is better of course. I am glad we went to Isla first, it was fun to see something new before going to akumal for the third time. Akumal is allways a great time.

Most definitely worth going. Last March we spent week #1 in Akumal & week #2 in Isla Mujeres & had a fantastic time both weeks. This Feb. we are reversing the order so as not to get stuck in a rut !

Because of the time required to get there I wouldn't recommend going for a day trip unless you are staying in Cancun. However if you can stay at least for a night it is definitely worth the trip. You can easily drive all the way around the island in a few hours in a golf cart. The way we went is on the ferry from Puerto Juarez out of Cancun. It's a fairly straight shot up 307 from the RM.

I know the OP did not mention Cozumel, and I have not been to Isla......

However,  I adore Cozumel and it is DEFINITELY worth going if you have your time planned out.  If you stay in the Riviera Maya, leave early and plan on spending an hour or two in PDC, then catch the ferry to Cozumel.  The ferry ride is about 45 min.  When you get to Cozumel, go to Rentadora Isis and rent a car (you can walk there from the ferry if you are healthy, easily).  Then take the rental car to a hotel like Coral Princess in a one bedroom suite (beautiful view, beautiful sunset...OMG)....stop on the way at the grocery and get any goody's you want.  Check in to the hotel and put your stuff away and go directly to the east side.  If you can time it so you reach the East side around 1pm or so, then you will have a couple hours to stop at a private beach of your choosing, go to Coconuts on the cliff and all the other bars/stops.  Shoot for getting back to your hotel by sunset and chill on the beach with a drink and watch the sunset.  AMAZING.

Just got back from our third time at Ixchel Condos...it is so easy to get to using Ultramar and USA entertainment. They are always on time and we love Isla. From Ixchel, you can walk to the store, the market, which is just a block away, and to all the restaurants and shops. There is not alot of good shops, but many great restaurants. Renting a golf cart is a must. We rented for the week and had a blast. So laid back, so fun, and so easy....no driving 307!!! No Playa del Carmen stop signs...no hassle vacation at it's best...

I wouldn't mind staying at Ixchel again but only if they shut down Chimbo's first.

That Mexi-Rap until 2 or 3 in the morning was more than I could stand. And we were on the top floor.
I had my ear plugs in but I could still feel the windows shake from the "music".

Tomas! Start packing because they won't let them have the music any more. It was wonderful because we usually stay on the fourth floor right behind. We just saw waiters selling drinks from there...YEAH!!!

My sister and brother-in-law are thinking about going to Isla M. in the new year. Now, these are people who don't travel much, don't go to "3rd world countries" and are normally fairly free with their opinions about those of us who do. They are super paraniod about safety, germs, don't like eating out, don't like hotel rooms, are serious vegetarians/picky eaters, don't like the heat, have health issues, and to be honest, I can't even see them getting though the Cacun airport in one piece. So, you could have knocked me over with a feather when it was said they were thinking about Isla. But, I just stood there and said, gee that sounds really nice! Honestly people, are they going to be able to handle Isla M.? Is it on par with Tulum with regards to ameneties? If they ask me, what should I advise them, knowing them the way I do? I actually think that iIf I mention that they are going to have to put their used toilet paper in a garbage can, that might end the trip planning then and there!

There is a Palace resort on the far side of the island. That might be ok for them. Or they could stay at Villa Rolandi and that would probably work. If they venture out though it is typical Mexico and may not be something they enjoy. I would encourage them to go to an AI in Cancun.

I dunno about the Palace, it's kind of isolated, only about 62 rooms or so and gets daytrippers from other Palace resorts. But I do like the idea of Villa Rolandi, the food is top notch and sometimes Expedia has deals.

Yep, I guess they'll really have to do their research, and I think that's what I'll tell them. After all the comments they've made over the years about our holidays to "brown" countries, I'm leaning towards not actually telling them anything useful at all. Like what to expect and how to navigate the Cancun airport, for one. I'm not sure why all of a sudden somebody they know has convinced them that Mexico ( and particualrly Isla), is a good idea because they sure haven't wanted to listen to us about what a nice place it is to holiday in.

You have a mean streak! I love it. If you tell them anything tell them that most of the toilet bowls don't have seats so they will have to sit on the rim and maybe flush it with a bucket full of mosquito laden rain water. Also that if there is no toilet paper, and there probably won't be, that they may have to very carefully recycle some that was gently used from the waste basket or the floor.
