I'm the kind of person who says. "Why should I buy trip insurance? Don't we all know it's a big scam?".
Well. I'm about to find out.
We had a fantastic trip totally planned and booked. First week we were going to drive from Cancun to Belize and Guatemala (Tikal and Flores), then three for four days in Valladolid for the "XXII Expo Feria en honor a de la Candelaria 2013". We went last year and had a ball. Then it was off to Akumal for two weeks on HMB.
My wife had major foot surgery in August but we figured that she would be in better shape than ever when Jan rolled aorund. Then the first hiccup. The surgery on her foot didn't go the way it should and after 8 weeks in a cast and a boot she was informed that she had to have the surgery done again. AARRGG! We were on the brink of cancelling at that point but decided to wait and see how things progressed. Then the second problem occurred. I tripped over a carpet at home and landed on my shoulder. I went to the doctor and they diagnosed it as a "soft tissue injury" (they should just say , "we don't know"). After a couple of hundred percocets and 8 weeks of no relief from the incredible pain I convinced them to do an MRI. Torn labrum in my left shoulder and my biceps tendon was torn in two places. We have to schedule surgery. Then he tells me it might be until middle of December before I can get the surgery done and then 8-12 weeks of rehab. So much for our trip of a lifetime.
For some odd reason I bought trip insurance when I bought my plane tickets. So now I can cancel the trip for $100 per ticket. I had already paid for half of the stay in Akumal.
I had a colonectomy in May due to a tumor and went on a crusade to lose weight and get in shape for the pyramid climbing in Tikal. Dropped 40 pounds since June. I haven't been at this weight in over 30 years. Feel great and was ready to go. Then a little trip and wham I'm out. At this point I'm trying to reschedule but I was told that the insurance would cover the cancellation fees with Virgin and I want the condo to keep my money for a future trip. We'll see how that goes. To top it off my business is taking off and a one armed electrician isn't real effective but I can do a little hiring and take care of that.
So now the journey of the insurance claim begins. I went through this before when Mexicana folded and came out if it ok. We are hoping everything works out and we can go in late Feb or March.
We won't let this stop us we just have to work around the inconvenience. We're both in our 60's and try to stay in reasonably good shape so we are still in training for Tikal!
Insurance seems like a waste of money until you need it. I constantly complain about my Kaiser costs. I pay $1140 a month now just for me and it goes to $1245 in January. But it all works out when you need a couple of hundred thousand in surgery costs.
The moral of the story is that the insurance is cheap compared to the potential loss that you may unexpectedly stumble across.

YUP! Or you need it, and don't have it. Been there. I sure hope it all works out for you. Best wishes, with all of it.

My good friends father was in a partnership for many years. One year he and his partner decided the business was slipping some and they needed to try to cut down their expenes. They decided that the partnership insurance that they had been paying for years really just wasn't worth it, and was just a big waste of money, so they closed the policy.
Well I guess you know what happened next don't you?? Alan the partner had a massive and fatal heart attack the very next year, and Roy was left to buy out Alan's widow to the tune of several hundred thousand dollars.
Lesson learned a little too late!!

Bottom line is that insurance may seem like a waste of money, but when the time comes to collect, peeps who have coverage are sure glad they spent the dollars to pay the premiums.

Sorry... What a bum deal . :( I hope your trip can happen in the near future. Best wishes for good healing. I have never bought trip insurance except when I traveled with a bunch of kids and some fragile adults. I know this is silly as something can happen to any of us. Thank you for the reminder. If you really look at trip insurance it really isn't that much to add it for the amount you are spending on your trip.

Oh Panesh, what a nightmare and I'm ss for everything you have had to go through the last couple of months. It might be a little different where you are but..from what I understand trip insurance does not cover any pre-existing condition 3 months prior to departure. I hope this is not the case for you and you are going to be reimbursed. Its always such a worry that something will happen and the piece of mind trip insurance brings is well worth it. Keep us updated on the results.

I hope everything works out well for you Neal.  That both surgeries go well and that you trip is rescheduled and wonderful!

Thanks for the reminder.

I always wrestle with the decision to buy the insurance as well. So far so good. I did buy it when we took the kids, as it was costing around $10,000.

I sure hope everything works out for you!

The big thing I am curious about is your weight loss! Forty pounds is quite a loss!
Good for you! You must feel really good, not only physically but it must be incredible emotionally!

How did you do it?

I'll find out tomorrow but the way I read it was that the pre-existing condition exemption was for 60 days before you bought the policy. You can't buy a policy way after you bought the tickets and nobody can predict what will happen between the time you buy the insurance and your departure date.

The coverage effective date would be the date of purchase in my opinion. Maybe someone here can interpret this correctly. I'm not an attorney and didn't spend last night at a Holiday Inn Express!

(t) PRE-EXISTING MEDICAL CONDITION EXCLUSION:
The Insurer will not pay for any Loss or expense
incurred as the result of an Injury, Sickness or other
condition of an Insured, Traveling Companion,
Business Partner, or Family Member which, within the
60 day period immediately preceding and including the
Insured’s coverage effective date: (a) first manifested
itself, worsened or became acute or had symptoms
which would have prompted a reasonable person to
seek diagnosis, care or treatment; (b) for which care or
treatment was given or recommended by a Physician;
(c) required taking prescription drugs or medicines,
unless the condition for which the drugs or medicines
are taken remains controlled without any change in the
required prescription drugs or medicines.

It would be kind of pointless to buy insurance that didn't cover the time between purchase and departure. That's what the insurance is for.

I'm still losing weight now. Down to 194. minus 43 pounds since June 1. Shooting for 180 by the time we leave. It's a matter of willpower. I used to have 3-4 glasses of wine with dinner (or had dinner with my wine). I stopped drinking completely. I know I've saved enough money from not drinking to pay for a trip to Mexico! Good wine ain't cheap.
I also cut out most of the carbs. I eat fresh fruit for breakfast and about half of what I used to eat for dinner. Lunch is usually another peice of fruit. I really went on a Mexican diet. We have a Mi Pueblo near us, probably the most fantastic hispanic market outside of Mexico. We eat tacos for dinner 4 nights a week. Salads and veggies the other nights. It all started when I had surgery. I really didn't feel like eating afterwards and just turned it into a life style change and bingo. Bye bye weight.

Talked to Travel Guard this morning.
No problem with the trip insurance. I just wanted them to pay the $100 per ticket cancellation fee but they are refunding the total airfare costs. It'll take a month or so but all is good.
Just a note here, When you take out the insurance it will only be for the airfare unless you specify that you want to include lodging. You just have to be specific and you should have no problems. My total cost for the ins. was $54. Money well spent at this point.

I had a friend that went to Cancun for a fishing trip last year. While there he suffered a stroke, and obviously was glad to have insurance. He came a long way and was looking really good so decided he would go again this past October. Seeing as how he had a stroke, he was finding it hard to get trip insurance. He decided that he was going to go regardless if he got coverage or not. He was driving by BCAA and thought he would see if they would cover him. They did give him the coverage for $280 which was well worth it. While down there in October on some flats somewhere he suffered another stroke. Spending 3-4 days at the hospital in Cancun he was released and is doing well again. I couldn't imagine how it would have drained his bank account if he decided to go without insurance like he was going to. It's stories like these that make you glad that you buy travel insurance no matter what the cost. It's like the visa commercial says "don't leave home without it"
