My husband and I were talking about vacations last night - it didn't really hit home until we were discussing the possibility that we may only be able to have ONE vacation next year.... we used to take so many more vacations than we do now!

Back in 2005 we took FOUR vacations. In 2006 we took THREE. In 2007 we had FOUR. In 2008 and 2009 it was THREE each year.

But now that it's so dang hard to find reasonably-priced airfare, we just can't do it any more. We used to be able to fly to Florida for $200-250 each, and to Mexico for $300 each. Now we have to spend twice that much.

Sorry - just had to grumble, rant & rave a bit. The possibility of only one vacation next year is killing me!

I have found that, even with the higher airfares, decent fares are out there. The problem is, a person has to put in a lot of time and be in the right place and time to stumble on them. And be willing to go directly to the carrier website rather than always relying on the kayak.com type search engines.

We got a $332 fare last June 2011for our 2012 April trip with our family which I was ecstatic about as fares had been around $500 a pop out of MSP.. I woke up around midnight and couldn't fall back to sleep. So I went online to check fares and, bingo, there it was!!!!!!!!! Needless to say, I jumped all over it which saved us about $2300 for our group of 13. Plus I picked up $357 fare in June with aa.com for our 2013 April return without the kids and grandkids. Right now, the best fare is $460.

We really lucked out in July and took advantage of a $122 RT fare MSP to Ft. Meyers the end of this month through spirit air website. The add ons are not included but we did we pay $10 each to select our seats and will use backpacks rather than paying $28 for each carry on.

The days of readily accessible cheap air and a choice of departure and arrival times are pretty much behind us.

I know exactly what you mean sandinmypants.......I used to live in AR and I sware the airfare was a lot less then, even with the extra connection.  I always thought if I moved to DFW, it would be so much easier to fly to Mexico IE cheaper.  But, that is simply not the case.  One thing I have never understood is how it can be so much cheaper flying from the NE to Mexico than it is from DFW.

Last night I read a news article on my ipad that Spirit Airlines is now charging $100 for carry on.  The article says it is to deter people from carry on because of the delays it creates loading and departing the aircraft.  I am disgusted.  Its bad enough that at 5'10" myself and my husband 6'5" there is NO leg room... NO arm room....Can barely breathe and then someone bangs their chair against your legs.  Oh, sure....you can pay extra for better seats....then pay more for checking luggage and now pay for carry on?  I could almost live with some of it, if I wasn't so miserably uncomfortable wedged in an even smaller spot than we used to get and being charged more for it.

On top of all that, being manhandled and nearly strip searched and forced thru all these hoops....and don't be late.  Hurry up!  Only to find out the airline is running an hour late.  Last year, we were on time to connect in IAH and they closed the gate early knowingly forcing us to take a later flight.  This was because they had people on stand by to fill up the plane, they knew our flight had landed and we were precisely on time....

I ADORE traveling and I have travelled so much, I pretty much know the drills.  However, I have to agree with sandinmypants and would add to that I feel I am getting significantly less and being charged significantly more.....

Hi..
I would be pretty happy with a $300. airfare from way up here...
I does seem over the last couple years its gone up every year...May be I am just getting older and cheaper...Crap..
It finds us really looking for something around fringe seasons and being a bit more flexable where we fly from.
Last year we went to PV... That wont happen again..
It would be good to share ideas on budget ideas.
Rich

While I agree with you, I think we need a little perspective.

Back in the early 1960's, when a gallon of gas cost 22 cents, a flight from New York to LA could be bought for $250 round-trip. The average new car was $2,500. Minimum wage in 1960 was $1.00 per hour; it went up to $1.15 in 1961! The average new house was $12,000. And that $250 flight, in 1960 dollars, works out to about $2300 now.
Yes, the seats were bigger and they served food and drinks for free but it was stupid expensive to fly and only the rich and famous did it.

The first flight my Mom took was in 1973 when we moved from Halifax to Calgary, she was 28 years old. It was my first flight too. When I was a kid, vacations were driving to my cousins in Victoria. The ferry from Vancouver to the island was a Big deal! In 1985 my Mom, who was divorced, took my brothers and I to Disneyland. She’d been saving for 8 years to take us. The girls at her work threw a party (with cake) for her and congratulated her on her Once in a Lifetime vacation!!!!

The idea of going to Mexico was something akin to flying to the moon!

So I do understand that it’s getting more and more expensive to travel and they are nickel and diming us to death, I think we should remember that not too long ago we would have had to been very rich to even consider a vacation spot like the Mayan.

I know, looking for airfare for March, which I realize is peak season, but the prices are above $800 a person, from New Mexico! It will start to hurt Mexico tourism too, again.

Tickets RT from Minneapolis 3rd wk of March today is $1544.78 per person. Same tickets 4 motnsh ago were $454.00 each. Hard to understand such an increase even with it being the busiest time of the year. Last March same tickets we got in summer of 2011 for uner $400 each. I am glad we got our Jan flights when we did as those same tickets today are over $150 more for each. I to would like to take 2 trips per year but at these rates pretty hard to. Hence why we extended our Jan trip to 2 wks. Get a little more bang for your buck that way. Can't wait until the day comes we can do a month at a time.

I don't know but the airlines have to be making money. I just bought two round trip tickets to Las Vegas from Chicago on Southwest Airlines for $134 each. I can check up to 2 bags each and change my ticket for free. Las Vegas is a couple of hundred miles further than Cancun and costs 1/3 to 1/4 of what I have to pay to fly to Mexico. Figure that one out.

Our airfare is costing more than our AI for 7 nights.  Makes taking vacations much harder when airfare is increasing so quickly.  Granted, we're in a small airline market which makes our flights more money than if we were to drive to a larger airport, but the parking and gas always even things out and we'd rather land and be 10 minutes from home instead of 3-4 hours.

Hubby and I said just this a few weeks ago, explaining to the kids that they were lucky as we would never have dreamed of going to Mexico when we were growing up.

I wish we could take 3 vacations a year. Never have as a child and we do our best to take small trips ...drivable....during the summer for some others. But the one big one is to Mexico. An extra 650 bucks this past summer. Sucked but yet.....good times for sure. That said..I got RT airfare...MDW to Loves for under 150 RT all in for our trade show in January.

Still blows to go to CUN. Not enough carriers going to make it price challenged. Supply and demand situation kinda thang.
