Saturday, Babs and I, C&C and Patty1975 spent some time talking to Renato about the planned construction here at the ABR.
Renato said demolition of buildings 1&2 will be starting soon, they will be replaced by new rooms, although the buildings might extend farther back away from the beach.
Construction expected to take up to 2 years.
Also, at some point the Moonrise Bar we be demolished, to be replaced in some form in the future. Renato said an efforrt will be made to save all of the signs at the bar, except tor those so deteriorated that it will be difficult to remove them without destroying them.
Some good news, he said at some point soon they will be getting nice seat cushions for ALL of the wooden chairs at the resort.
There are currently no plans to install Wifi in the new rooms, but tubing wilL be put in place so that it may be an option in the future.
He shared much more with us, but a lot of the plans are not yet finalized and right now the beach is calling me.

Thanks for the update, Badger.
Any word on how many stories/rooms these new buildings will have? In other words is the place gonna grow?
Sounds like it's gonna be a lot quieter on the south side of the resort for the next few years due to construction.

As for the cushions.... I bring my own. I hate having numb butt.

Not surprised, been hearing different things about the fate of 1 and 2 for a couple of years. I hope the Moonrise is reincarnated in a fashion similar to its current state.

If there is an auction I might suggest it benefit the turtle program since that beach is such an important nesting site.

I seriously doubt it! The dining room and main bar are already packed when the hotel is at full capacity.  I can't see them adding more rooms unless they renovate the whole place..

Question... How do you manage to fit clothes into your case what with the pillows, sheets, bedspreads and cushions that you take along?

Soo happy to hear about the cushions! When you say "for all seats" does that mean that they have SOME cushions now? That's the main reason I go to bed, numb butt. Come to think of it those chairs have probably saved me from numb brain a few times.

Thank God!!!

I'm so with barata...
My congenital extra vertebrae & prehensile tail can't take much more of those bar chairs.

I have an abundance of extra flesh on my butt unfortunately and those chairs are still killer. Cushions would be a pretty significant and not that expensive upgrade.

Ok, on the contruction start all I know is Renato said "soon" Yesterday there were surveyors working around the Moonrise and buildings 1 &2.
As far as how many rooms, I sensed that they would be more rooms rather then less and that they will extend out more towards Hwy 307, but Renato definitely said they were still working on the final design.
There are no seat cushions here yet, but Renato said they were at the point of picking out the color for the fabric.
Most of us have been sitting on doubled up beach towels when at the Moonrise, which in right now calling my name.

Badger, ask him if he can put shims for the table legs on his list of improvements too. They seem to wobble a bit more every visit!

NO! That wobble is mandatory for Mexico, along with dogs and cats in the dining area.

Cuts down on the floor cleaning costs.

We chatted with Renato this past July about the renovations and he indicated then that because ABR is in a protected area, they are not permitted to add to the room count, only renovate what's currently there.

Nice to hear that my favourite small resort will always stay small!!!

Wegamoose, that was the best post on this topic, here's hoping it stays small. Sad to see the Moonrise go though.

Actually the tables stop wobbling after you been at the Moonrise for about 2 to 3 hours. They then just tend to follow your every move!!!

I wonder what type of cushions they're planning to get for the chairs? Something all weather-proof that can be thrown in a washing machine?

I know, I know..... I'm a bit of a germ-o-phobe.

I'd really like to see lower tables and more comfortable chairs - the kind with arms.... club-style or whatever, if you know what I mean. Wicker, or something, like I've seen at other resorts. Those hard-back, straight-up-and-down chairs just aren't conducive to sitting for more than about 30 minutes. But then, maybe that's their plan.

most resorts go max of 3 floors

Perhaps a U Shaped building facing out to the Moonrise with an Adults only pool in the centre

A protected area - zoning - nothing some pesos can't overcome

I know exactly what you mean Crunch. My extra padding doesn't do much good on hard chairs lol

Just a suggestion, but maybe they could put new mattrersses (sp) in their budget. I like a firm matteress, but bricks just don't do it.
Say matteresses three times. It's silly.

sigh, I really hope the construction won't be too noisy when we're threre, our favorite palapa is right in front of bldg 1.

The interesting part is that there will be new rooms extending back into the jungle, but, if the zoning holds true, and they can't add more rooms, perhaps the rooms themselves will be the new premium rooms, and will be larger, and perhaps even nicer than the current superior rooms. I've said for a while now that ABR might want to consider creating some time share rooms, with kitchens in them and sitting areas, for those of us who would purchase a share. I know we would love to have a time share at ABR. That said, we do not, repeat do not, want to see time share sharks hanging around ABR. If that's what it would mean, forget I ever said anything.

As far as cushions on the chairs, all I can say is, hallelujia! Now if they could throw in a few ceiling fans in the restaurants, I'd be thrilled.
