The weather has been fantastic, but cool enough that a light fleece shirt feels good in the morning.
Also, in the evenings and early mornings the mosquitos have been bad and as of yesterday there was no insect repellent available in either Chomak or El Pueblito, both completely sold out. This morning I will walk up to the Pueblo to see if I can find some there.
You might want to bring some along with you if traveling soon.

I stopped at Chomak on my way to the Pueblo and Chomak now has a few cans of Off spray and a few tubes of Off cream, but it's probably safer(and cheaper) to bring your own.

Thanks Badger - just got the bulk of my packing done and didn't think we would need that. I have added it back onto the list!

Yeah, when I went down to Xamach Dos I noticed the mosquitos. But they never bit me so I didn't really think about it. The funny thing is Hugo, who works there, gets eaten up by them. LOL! It's like being an albino lifeguard.

I have read that rubbing gin on your skin will repel mosquitoes. Is anyone willing to try it tonight and report back for tomorrow lol.

I can try - I have a bottle of gin in the basement - but the mosquitoes are non existant in Calgary in November! LOL Guess I would need to be in Akumal for this to be a proper test - and I am NOT in Akumal

This might be what you are referring to:

"Gin and Tonic was invented by the British in India as a double whammy against mosquitoes and malaria - the tonic is obviously citrusy which repels the mosquitoes but it also contains quenine which is a natural anti-malarial. The Gin just happens to combine very nicely with tonic. (i.e. just drinking tonic would have the same effect)."

Are the mosquitos bad year around or is it more seasonal? What could I expect in February?

I'm going to suggest that mosquitos (or as we called them in SE Texas, buzzards) are MUCH better in February. You see they breed in water and we are currently coming out of wet season, so you have more. Plus, it gets much windier in February so the tradewinds help.

All that said, I've never been in February so bring some repellent anyway.

Homecrew - We spend a month in Feb down there, always bring some repellant and have never once had to use it.

How bad are they badger? .  I've never really noticed them on the beach.

Mostly seem to find them ( or they find me ) when in the jungle ( cenotes or ruins)  I'm used to Canadian deep woods suckers, so maybe I'm tougher than the rest of y'all!   I always pack bug spray...I just forget to take it on excursions, which is not a good thing.

I sorta tested this one a few weeks ago. My "go to" cocktail is tequila y tonic con limon and I consumed "a few" most evenings.

No matter, the skeeters ate me alive!!! I went thru a box of the Off! wipes and a can of Muskol, but the little s#its would find that few square millimeters of skin I missed - usually ankles and behind the knees - and attack!!!

Chris never got one bite...

Thanks so much guys, usually go in Feb and don't really have skeeter issues but they absolutely LOVE me so if they're out in full force now I'm bringing a gallon 'O spray when we head down in two weeks!

Thanks for the the heads up Badge. Juan is on it! In January I've only ever gotten a couple of bites on my ankles from sand fleas I think.
margaritamama, you made me laugh out loud! Applying gin in November in Calgary - I think it will work!!

Tomas has to marinate himself in bug dope or they are all over him. In recent years they have started to find me to be sweeter also and so now I never leave the condo without a Deep Woods Off shower.

C-goat, I've been bitten the most while sitting on my balcony in the morning and again late evening when the wind dies down. I am like Snow, always manage to miss one spot on my legs and they feast on me, while Babs hasn't used a drop of repellent and hasn't gotten one single bite.

I only collected three bites during the entire visit, but the Daughter child was getting multiple bug bites daily. Never have problems in February.

Thanks Badger....I guess I'm like Babs and Chris.  Maybe they don't like the Celtic blood or something?  .   Will you be at ABR this weekend?  May run into you.

Cheers,
Seagoat

I love that Off Botanical cream. The spray is good too, but the lotion smelled good enough that I could put it on my face and hands and never had to deal with mosquitos or a chemical smell. I usually get eaten alive, those mossies just love my blood, but, this trip I used Off Botanical on every day except our first day and the only time they tagged me was that first day.
