We are looking to book a week in the Akumal area in late April. We were wondering where we should stay.

Looking at either Half Moon Bay or Akumal for something on the beach. We are looking for a nice beach where we can snorkel, swim and close to dining options.

Both bays look good but need to deceide on one. Want a nice beach and also good snorkeling. Turtles are important, so looking for the best beach in late April.

Last year we did a week on Soliman bay and looking for a different vacation this time around. We are planning on having a car so transportation is not an issue.

Which bay should we book?

HMB in my opinion is just a slice of heaven and it is such a short walk away from Akumal Bay and all the restaurants and stuff.

If you want an AI then ABR or if you want a hotel HAC in Akumal. If you want a condo then HMB for sure. HMB is soooooooooooo tranquil and gorgeous.

How about Jade Bay? We loved Las Villas Akumal. Sandy beach, good snorkeling. You can walk up the beach to Akumal fairly easily. We don't drive down there and the last couple of years we have traveled with someone with mobility issues so it hasn't been an option for us. Someday we'd love to go back there though.

I like them both but Akumal Bay does have Akumal Bay and more restaurants. You really could walk from one to the other but if you have a car even better.

We've stayed on HMB for years, and even build a house on the north end. We love Akumal Bay too, so walk or ride our bikes there, while staying on the quieter HMB. You can't go wrong with either. Enjoy!

Are you wanting a condo or a hotel. If you have a car, HMB may be the way to go.

Akumal Bay is calmer for snorkeling on windier days. HMB is quieter, but a snorkeling write off if the breezes come up.

Personally, I lean towards Akumal, due to proximity of restaurants, easy water entry for snorkeling (IMO Half Moon Bay is a real challenge due to all the iron shore right at the waters edge) and the ease of being in town and not requiring a vehicle. Love Hotel Akumal Caribe which is right in town on the beach, or if you want to spurge a bit more Las Casitas are terrific.

Ditto on what she said!!!

We prefer to stay in a condo on HMB too, it's sooooo relaxing ... but we like to go over to Akumal Bay for snorkel trips if the water's rough on HMB.

Caribbean5, I think you are the only one who knows which is the bay for you. Ask yourself what you are seeking for your vacation.

Akumal Bay is a busy place.

Half Moon Bay is a quiet place.

One of these pix will call to you and that is the one you should pick. Enjoy your vacation at whichever bay you chose. Check out the map and you will see the lagoon is the farthest to the north on the road, HMB is in the middle, then Akumal bay.

BTW, I would like to make a clarification from an earlier post. Half Moon Bay is not on the iron shore. This is iron shore--

Annie,
I didn't suggest HBM is one ironshore. I suggested entry into the water is difficult, at best. I assume that it's ironshore at the water's edge. If not, I stand correctly. However it is there... rock, reef, ironshore... whatever.

I'd suggest HMB as well. When we stayed there we'd go into Akumal bay first thing in the AM, no later than 8 to snorkel & swim then back in HMB by noon to chillax on the beach. Snorkeling in HMB is awesome but you just need to be careful getting in.

Thanks everyone for all the info. The pictures of both beaches tell the story. Want to find a nice snorkel beach and for thanks to all your posts I don't think I can go wrong with either

I will search both beaches for a place to stay.

Any suggestions?

Do you want a hotel, or condo, or AI (only AI in Akumal proper is the ABR, or Akumal Beach Resort)? I have stayed at Hotel Akumal Caribe (non AI) many times and once in the Villas Maya bungalows, once at the ABR and several times at a condo on Aventuras Akumal with a friend. Have not yet stayed on Half Moon Bay but they have some nice looking condos there and one hotel (Vista del Mar).

We do not want an AI. We plan on staying one week in the Akumal area, as we are staying two additional weeks in AI but in different locations.

Condo or hotel works. Most likely on the beach. But we know we do not want an AI. Last year we spent one week on Soliman Bay but looking for a different location this year. We were planning on Akumal last year but changed our minds so pretty firm on staying in the Akumal area this time.

I like the idea of getting up early and going snorkeling in the morning as my wife likes to sleep in when on vacation. Prefer to stay at a place where I can snorkel close to where we are staying and not having to walk or swim too far.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

Bob

I recommend Las Casitas Akumal for you. We loved it! Nice quiet private beach, but more a condo atmosphere and walking distance to everything. If you on on a budget, then a condo or hotel on Half Moon Bay would be great since you will have a car.
