readwrite_slo “ Akumal Medical Center Clinic Assist ” Oct 31, 2012, 4:27 PM For those of you traveling to the Riviera Maya and staying in an all-inclusive hotel, beware of a business called "Akumal Medical Center Clinic Assist" that is found on the grounds of many of these hotels. During our stay at last July, my husband was bitten on his hand by a stinging fly. After about 24 hours, it became painful and swollen. We asked at the hotel about a doctor and were told one would be there that afternoon. The doctor met us in the lobby and took us to the clinic, a small building attached to the side of the lobby. After advising us how serious this bite was and treating my husband with a shot of cortisone and a few cortisone pills, she charged us $505 American--cash! Belatedly, we noticed a small sign on the clinic door stating the hotel was not responsible for the clinic or its charges. If you have to get treatment, at least ask the price before you let anyone touch you. There is a hospital in Playa del Carmen which I'm guessing is not a predatory enterprise like this clinic. Pass the word!

treating my husband with a shot of cortisone Wow. Sorry to hear what happened. I'm always amazed at the amount of reports of people getting one time "shots" while in Mexico. Whether they be antibiotic, cortisone or whatever. No way would I consent to that.

I have only been to Dr. Xavier for a pain shot for a bad back with terrible muscle spasms, but Dr. Vaquero sounds good from what I have read here in the past.

It took me a while to figure out why I liked Mexico so much, but I finally realized that so much about Mexico now reminds me of my childhood then. The infrastructure, the way people relate to their neighbors, the pace of life, the laws and so many other things, it's like going back to the fifties. One of those things is doctor appointments. Somebody here on LG a while back made the statement that if you see the doctor in Mexico you are guaranteed that you are going to get a shot, and that the visit may be a house call by the doctor. That took me back to when I was a kid in the fifties when the doctor came to your house if you were sick and it was guaranteed that you were going to get a shot. That doesn't happen in the US anymore and I dare to say that the term house call is not a part of you youngster's vocabulary. At least the doctors down there now use modern disposable needles like in the US and not those god awful huge, chrome plated, re-usable and re-sharpened (or not) needles that they used when I was a kid. I'm amazed we survived.

In Mexico....watching kids riding double on bicycles (sans helmets), hitching rides in the back of pickup trucks or crammed like sardines in cars .... all bring back childhood memories too. Childhood seems more carefree there...as it did when I was growing up. And being in Mexico brings that back for me.

The whole state is "a little behind the curve" on a lot of things but I find it so refreshing and I enjoy it.

Dr. Salazar in Tulum is first rate. He is on 307 right in the middle of town. I saw him a couple of trips ago for an absess. He did an outpatient procedure and prescribed anti-biotics. It was a couple of hundred dollars. Pretty much saved our trip. I was in some serious pain for a couple of days before I saw him. If I wasn't so lazy I could have had Kaiser reimburse me for the visit.

readwrite@charter.ne -- Sorry to hear about the exorbitant charge! Since you are trying to warn others it would be more effective to name the hotel. I googled Akumal Medical Center Clinic Assist and am not getting a clear picture which hotel it is in. I see others have had good experiences with other doctors. Here is our medical info on our FAQ's. I have been personally been treated by Dr. Vaquero and was quite pleased. BTW- you might want to change your login name. Looks like you put in your email by mistake.

I agree with Zorro , Readwrite , it might be best to name the hotel in question so people know where to be more cautious. It may be a case of one opportunist like a dishonest Pemex gas attendant ruining the reputation of many others . Your warning to ask first is always good advice . We found our way out to a jungle cenote and were surprised to sit with the owners for a half an hour and had a good chat and then had a private tour of a quite cool place . Our normal cenote costs are 10 dollars or less per person and I nearly soiled my drawers when the owner offered us a discounted price of 70 bucks ! Always ask . The worst of it was it was , that it was the first Locos , identities unknown , that we ever met that sent us to the expensive place from Manatee cenote that was free in those days !
