“ Akumal Medical Center Clinic Assist ”

Oct 31, 2012, 4:27 PM

For those of you traveling to the Riviera Maya and staying in an all-inclusive hotel, beware of a business called "Akumal Medical Center Clinic Assist" that is found on the grounds of many of these hotels. During our stay at last July, my husband was bitten on his hand by a stinging fly. After about 24 hours, it became painful and swollen. We asked at the hotel about a doctor and were told one would be there that afternoon. The doctor met us in the lobby and took us to the clinic, a small building attached to the side of the lobby. After advising us how serious this bite was and treating my husband with a shot of cortisone and a few cortisone pills, she charged us $505 American--cash! Belatedly, we noticed a small sign on the clinic door stating the hotel was not responsible for the clinic or its charges. If you have to get treatment, at least ask the price before you let anyone touch you. There is a hospital in Playa del Carmen which I'm guessing is not a predatory enterprise like this clinic. Pass the word!

Wow. Sorry to hear what happened.

I'm always amazed at the amount of reports of people getting one time "shots" while in Mexico. Whether they be antibiotic, cortisone or whatever. No way would I consent to that.

505 bucks? That is outrageous. Next time try the clinic in Akumal Peublo. They are great and the clinic is beautiful and clean and there charges are much more reasonable.

Tomas has had to get a steroid shot twice now, but it did not cost anything remotely close to that. The first time i actually took it back to ABR and gave it to him myself, but now I trust Dr. Vaquero.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS check the price the doctor in Mexico is going to charge you BEFORE he or she performs the treatment. I spent a good 30 minutes going over the charges last year at Akumal Medical Center even though my right foot was having a major gout attack and the pain was almost unbearable.

If you had been a member of our forum here you would have known this but gracias for bringing this to everybody's attention again so that more folks can be aware.

Oh, SD. If only you could say that with the pain I was in. You would soon become a believer. You would be one serious "consenter".

I agree - AMC was great...I had to use their services last year for a ruptured ear drum, among other things...and I got a shot too- and no worries -

I will say, I was very happy that Tomas and Crunch had been there & reviewed it in their trip reports. I knew where to go, what to expect, etc.

When I had a bit of misadventure in July, the good folks at ABR sent me to see Dr. Vaquero.
I was more than impressed with his services and price. BTW he speaks perfect english and has a terrific bedside (deskside) manner.
When I got home even my own Doc was happy with the treatment I had received from Dr. Vaquero.

I have only been to Dr. Xavier for a pain shot for a bad back with terrible muscle spasms, but Dr. Vaquero sounds good from what I have read here in the past.

I've been to the doctor at the Hacienda at the Gran Bahia Principe, and it was around $100 for the office visit (almost comparable to here without insurance) and around $20 for the meds I needed (for a UTI). The doctor spent quite a bit of time with me as I'm allergic to several different commonly-prescribed meds and they're sold under different names down there so we had to research what could & couldn't be prescribed for me. To be honest though, I was at that point that I just wanted to feel better and I would have been happy to pay twice that. Also, it was 8pm so definitely what I would have considered to be "after business hours"!

I'm curious about this.  I have comprehensive out-of-country medical insurance through work.  Would something like this be covered?

I know most of you are youngsters who missed out on the forties, fifties and early sixties but I had a recent revelation. It took me a while to figure out why I liked Mexico so much, but I finally realized that so much about Mexico now reminds me of my childhood then. The infrastructure, the way people relate to their neighbors, the pace of life, the laws and so many other things, it's like going back to the fifties. One of those things is doctor appointments. Somebody here on LG a while back made the statement that if you see the doctor in Mexico you are guaranteed that you are going to get a shot, and that the visit may be a house call by the doctor. That took me back to when I was a kid in the fifties when the doctor came to your house if you were sick and it was guaranteed that you were going to get a shot. That doesn't happen in the US anymore and I dare to say that the term house call is not a part of you youngster's vocabulary. At least the doctors down there now use modern disposable needles like in the US and not those god awful huge, chrome plated, re-usable and re-sharpened (or not) needles that they used when I was a kid. I'm amazed we survived.

Hi Seagoat
3 years ago i got sick in the Dominican Republic and spent 3 days and many tests in the hospital. when i got there they took my work provided medical insurance info, called the provider and i did not have to part with any cash. it would be a good idea to check with your insurance company before you go.

Thanks Pinky....I will check.  It's through Blue Cross, so pretty sure it would be covered.  BTW....your ticker is very pretty!

See you soon!  :)

I totally agree with that train of thought, Whale.
In Mexico....watching kids riding double on bicycles (sans helmets), hitching rides in the back of pickup trucks or crammed like sardines in cars .... all bring back childhood memories too. Childhood seems more carefree there...as it did when I was growing up. And being in Mexico brings that back for me.

They still do all that in Texas.

Bless their hearts, here. The whole state is "a little behind the curve" on a lot of things but I find it so refreshing and I enjoy it.

SG,

We had to pay cash, but he gave us detailed billing statements to submit to our insurance and so we were reimbursed at the out of network rate and then the trip insurance covered most of the rest.

Dr. Salazar in Tulum is first rate. He is on 307 right in the middle of town. I saw him a couple of trips ago for an absess. He did an outpatient procedure and prescribed anti-biotics. It was a couple of hundred dollars. Pretty much saved our trip. I was in some serious pain for a couple of days before I saw him.
If I wasn't so lazy I could have had Kaiser reimburse me for the visit.

Thanks Crunch...was it cold hard cash or do they take credit cards?  I'm carrying some cash...but I need it for Budha gardens spa!

That is good to know Panesh...thanks.  In fact, I just called my dentist and asked for some antibiotics to take there with me.  Given the way my teeth are these days, there is no way I want to be in that position while on vacay.  My dentist always complies with my request....how can he not? ...I'm funding his retirement!

readwrite@charter.ne -- Sorry to hear about the exorbitant charge! Since you are trying to warn others it would be more effective to name the hotel. I googled Akumal Medical Center Clinic Assist and am not getting a clear picture which hotel it is in.

I see others have had good experiences with other doctors. Here is our medical info on our FAQ's. I have been personally been treated by Dr. Vaquero and was quite pleased.

BTW- you might want to change your login name. Looks like you put in your email by mistake.

I agree with Zorro , Readwrite , it might be best to name the hotel in question so people know where to be more cautious. It may be a case of one opportunist like a dishonest Pemex gas attendant ruining the reputation of many others . Your warning to ask first is always good advice . We found our way out to a jungle cenote and were surprised to sit with the owners for a half an hour and had a good chat and then had a private tour of a quite cool place . Our normal cenote costs are 10 dollars or less per person and I nearly soiled my drawers when the owner offered us a discounted price of 70 bucks ! Always ask . The worst of it was it was , that it was the first Locos , identities unknown , that we ever met that sent us to the expensive place from Manatee cenote that was free in those days !
