I am returning the Akumal in a couple of weeks and have been trying to find a deal on a rental car. We have always used Cancun rent a car (alias America car rental) and had good luck. So I called because we got no response from an E-mail. The gentleman I talked to said we had to pay the airport tax now. I asked him why would I have to when his office is off airport? He said that the tax is charged to everyone now. Does anyone know about this and is Easyway the same? Could it be a scam of some kind?

I checked their prices on the website this week and noticed they are adding airport tax now. Something else i learned that I guess I never knew because we usually travel during low season, the cars are priced $100 more during Jan- March. Yikes! Thats a big difference.

Git r done , I am doing the same thing . Easyway does not seem to charge airport tax and I also noticed that CancunCarrental had begun to do this . For that reason I looked a little harder at Easyway having been a CancunCarRental man previously . Easyway does not disclose the dollar value of their mandatory Public Liability Insurance (PLI) which they call ALI and other renters do . I am trying to find out how much coverage they offer , especially for the website quotes . Easyway's bundled coverage option does not seem to include zero deductable and so you must pay more for that . In comparing the two with Easyway's bundle and zero deductable(EPC) WITHOUT airport tax their price was considerably higher than Cancun's for complete coverage including zero deductable WITH airport tax . In fairness Easyway's deductables are much smaller for those willing to gamble on the zero deductable option and the bundle includes medical costs to the renter which doesn't concern me but Cancun's is an extra paid option . Easyway is the only agency that I have NOT read any sketchy reports about , such as scams or fraud or missing spare tires or windshield chips on any of the local/Quintana Roo forums . We have only had great service with Cancun .

I feel your pain git r done. We have rented from both of those same rentals over the past 5 years. It seems like there is no "low" season rates anymore. I just rented for Nov. 14-20 and same rates as this past May-June, Sept and March 2011.

did you check with easyway which is another liked rental agency?

We had an issue with Easyway over the summer. My husband spoke extensively with the man at the desk before signing the agreement about what was covered and what we were liable for. Easyway stressed that we should not lose the spare tire or we were liable for it. They explained that they were often stolen. Nothing was told to us about the hubcaps. It seems our car was 2 hubcaps short when we returned it and they wanted us to pay for them. The issue was not paying for the hubcaps, the issue was the attitude of the man at the Easyway office. We were shocked we were missing hubcaps as our car sat in the parking lot of the Palladium for most of the trip. He acted like we either stole them or lost them on purpose. As we tried to negotiate the cost, contract, etc... he just kept upping the amount of $$ we needed to pay them. Finally as we got upset and suggested they call the police, another man came out of the back and spoke to him in hushed spanish. He then apologized and asked us to pay $20 US for each hubcap. It was quite scary and we have NEVER had an experience like that in Mexico. Don't want to go thru that again.
Note: Be aware of your hubcaps

I'm going to have to get a hold of cancun. I have a confirmed res at prices way lower than they are showing now. The difference is over $300 for the month. The rise in rates is ridiculous.
Thanks for the heads up on the insurance. I'm going to try and get the visa info this week for Belize and Guatemala. I'll ask about the car insurance when I do that.

thanks for your input juan. how about from one of the airport rental agencys? Getting quotes from them it looks like the price is actually cheaper paying the insurance they offer.

I to, will be doing a month's rental. I've found that it's best to reserve for the following year as soon as you return from your present trip. You can modify the dates a bit, but what you want is a quoted rate. These rates are bound to increase as the year goes by and you get closer to your rental dates.
So I started out thinking I'd rent for 2 days, buy groceries and liquor, and return. Use collectivos and taxis for a little over 2 weeks, and then rerent for the last 8 days to travel to Xcalak and Mahahual. When I heard about all the hubub with taxis getting tipped over in Tulum, and needing to get off and back on a collectivo when heading north around Puerto Aventuras - I decided to rent the entire 4 weeks. Plus I'd probably waste a day on the rerent.
So then the price negotiations began. Of course I wanted the quoted weekly rate. Would have been 1176 usd. New quote from Caribbean was 1440. I Emailed back and said I don't get the math. "Well senor, high season yada, yada, yada. But my boss is willing to compromise. Total quote = 1275 USD. After 5% Loco Gringo discount, I'm down to `1200 USD. Not that far from the original quoted price of 1176. So I'm pretty happy considering the price increases across the board for car rentals. When I priced out Easyway, I can't get close to Caribbean (American, Cancun-rent a car, et al).

But what I still scratch my head about, is when they finally called me back after not returning Emails for about 4 days, was it was on my wife's cell phone. Now how did they get this number?? I don't recall giving it to them with the rental paperwork. I dunno maybe I musta??

I made my res in August (for jan/Feb) and the confirmed res I have says nothing about "rates may change" so I'm sticking with my original reservation. $817 for 25 days for the VW Gol. The only thing I can see changing is that I might have to pay the airport tax now but there's not much I can do about that. In the past I've been able to change my reservation when the rates went down so I see no problem with the quote I have now. We'll see when I get there. They know me and we've had some long discussions in the past.

We went with Cancun/America this last trip which was 2 weeks in Mid October. No time share pushing with them this time, they honored the hot deal upgrade & loco discount. Have always gone with easyway except once but they couldn't come close to America whose cars have actual plates. Days of the $20+ a day rental are just long gone. Can't believe what we are paying for 2 weeks in December but High Season is High Season, just wish low season pricing would come back . Think we may have to buy a car or scooter down there & just store it next year.

Qoutes a quote. You should be golden for amount on your Email reply. I can see them wanting the airport tax, but just hold firm to your guns. A quote is a quote, and that was bottom line before any regulation changes. You may have to restate your position 4 or 5 timers before they realize you're not going to cave - but I think you'll win out.

That's pretty much my plan, but I got a recent bottom line quote, after adjustments from adding extra days. Any airport tax shouldda been included in a bottom line quote.

Good luck!!

Now next year is a dilemma. Maybe do a different thing where I'm not spending that much on transportation.

just reserved from cancun rent a car. Says it is a 2013 with a radio. hmmm. The quote was about 50$ less than easy way. There was an airport tax of about 26$. If they are off the airport why the tax?
O well. 50$ to spend at LBV. The reply I received was from caribean rent a car and they were prompt at confirming. We shall see in Feb.

When we've rented from cancunrentacar the paperwork was always from Caribbean, so no worries there. I still don't get the airport fee...Econo doesn't indicate that they charge it, and they're slightly closer to the airport than cancunrentacar. How about Easyway? Are they collecting the extra fee?

Been reading mixed reports about this over on TA, apparently this airport fee is something new that the authorities are just starting to charge all car rentals on or off airport. Hope someone can get something definitive.

Most car rental companies (in the US and abroad) put a hold on funds to cover the deposit for the car. Those funds are frozen until they actually run the debit. When you return the car they drop the hold on the funds. At Cancun they give you the signed deposit credit slip to tear up when you return the car.
I've rented from Cancun (or Carribean or whatever) for years now and never have any problems. They brought me a new car in Tulum when the trunk lock on the one I had broke. Took about three hours but nonetheless they did what they were supposed to do and we went on our way.
These are all the same company

Regarding the hubcap issue, my husband had a good idea. He thinks we should remove the hubcaps and keep them in the house and put them back on before we return the car. I guess we can’t do that with the spare tire, but it’s a good idea for the hubcaps. Technically, how do we know it’s not the rental company taking the hubcaps and spare tires so the can charge us later? I think they do ask where we are going, don’t they?

DH just booked a car with Cancun rentacar for our upcoming trip and he asked that they remove the hubcaps. You don't want to remove them yourself because they can say you damaged them and charge you for them. Make sure it is noted on your paperwork if your car does not have any hubcaps.

All I know is I use Easyway and I am paying the same per day $ amount as I paid the last several times (couple years).  It includes all ins.  Yes, ins doesn't cover the windshield, spare tire, hubcaps and whatever.  My car had some major damage from near death/deaf experience with a barreling ice truck.  They never mentioned it when I returned the car and they said "NO PROBLEMS" when I showed them.  Cammie and Doug killed their transmission and Easyway brought them another car in 20 minutes.  Dunno what Doug paid.

BTW, anyone ever try making friends with these guys?  I always take them individual Thank You cards with a little tip money for each one.  Spreading a little sunshine, smiles, hugs and a little cash goes a loooong way in MX.  I even give the guy who cleans the car a couple bucks.
