Our friends will be arriving earlier than us and plan to drive back to the airport from Akumal to pick us up. Where can they park? Where can we plan to meet up at? Any suggestions to make this easy will be appreciated. Our friends have never been to the area but we are pretty familiar with the airport.

Driving into the airport can be pretty intimidating if you have never done it and the first time I ended up going round and round looking for the Terminal 2 lot entrance lol Make sure they leave themselves extra "getting lost" time.
There seem to be too many lanes but tell them just to be careful and follow the signs; the taxis and other transports seem to watch out for the erratic gringos

Both terminals have parking lots in front, the "take a ticket" kind, you pay the guy on the way out.
They will have to wait outside. At the terminal 2 arrivals it seemed easy for me to access the arrival area, and just stand and wait with all the other transports.
If you are coming in Terminal 3, you can't get into the actual arrival area from there, but just to the right of the "out" doors (or your left as you come out of the terminal) there is a small gate with a guard; I collected my passengers there.

I think most if not all flights coming in from the US go into terminal 3. If that's not the case could someone please let me know. I need to pick someone up on an American Airways flight. Sounds like for terminal 3 I would park the rental car and stand just to the side of the Arrival area where I will be able to see her come out and direct her my way. If any of this isn't right any help would much appreciated.

They can also wait in the covered area just outside of the airport, to the left of the door as people exit the building. However it's a restaurant, so they can pick up some way-overpriced cervezas! It's a few steps up from the sidewalk level and it's easy to spot people coming out.
