ok - I read tsa's www site. It has conflicting info.

Three years ago they took my lighter (Bic) and my lithium & AA batteries from my carry-on. I was too bummed.

Now I read those items are OK for carry-on.

So - what's the deal? I cannot afford them to snatch all my batteries. I can buy another lighter...but not lithium batteries.

Can someone advise?

The last 5 or 6 trips (2010 to present) I've traveled with a Fuji HS-10 camera in my carry-on.
It takes 4 AA lithium batteries and I also bring along a bubble-pack of 4 spares in the camera bag, just in case.

Never had a problem at SLC, DFW, DEN or CUN.

Those lithium batteries are a bit spendy, but they ROCK!!!
We take hundreds of pics - some with flash - every 10-day trip and we've never burned thru a set of batteries.
With rechargeable-type batteries, we have to change them out EVERY DAY, usually at the most inopportune time...

Hola Scubs. Here you go http://safetravel.dot.gov/whats_new_batteries.html

Apparently you can now carry spare lithium batteries in your carry-on but not in your checked luggage. The reason is because they may catch fire if they short out. In the cabin the fire could be extinguished before it gets out of hand but not so in the baggage area. Looks like they are OK in either area if they are inserted in the device they are supposed to power, it's spares that they are worried about.

Don't know about lighters.

No problem going to Mexico but I've had the Mexican security confiscate my package of unopened batteries when leaving Mexico. Cancun airport, they were taking the batteries away including rechargeable, didn't bother the ones in the camera though.

Disposible lighters..in small quantities..1 or 2..are okay...in a carry on...what's not okay are refillable ones and the fuel..either zippos or propane..so a BIC to light your candles or incense is just fine..Where ya goin' ?...

If you are taking extra lithium batteries and they are outside the device they power the requirement is to have them in their original packaging and be well insulated from contacting anything.

From TSA:

Tips For Safe Travel with Batteries

Keep batteries and equipment with you, or in carry-on baggage - not in your checked baggage! In the cabin, flight crew can better monitor conditions, and have access to the batteries or device if a fire does occur.

Buy batteries from reputable sources and only use batteries approved for your device – avoid counterfeits! A counterfeit battery is more likely to cause a fire in your equipment – costing you more in the long run, and compromising safety.

Look for the mark of an independent testing or standards organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Do not carry recalled or damaged batteries on aircraft. Check battery recall information at the manufacturer's website, or at the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Only charge batteries which you are sure are rechargeable! Non-rechargeable batteries are not designed for recharging, and become hazardous if placed in a battery charger. A non-rechargeable battery placed in a charger may overheat or cause damage later.

Only use a charger compatible with your rechargeable battery – don’t mix and match!

If original packaging is not available for spare batteries, effectively insulate battery terminals by isolating the batteries from contact with other batteries and metal. Do not permit a loose battery to come in contact with metal objects, such as coins, keys, or jewelry.

Place each battery in its own protective case, plastic bag, or package, or place tape across the battery's contacts to isolate terminals. Isolating terminals prevents short-circuiting.

Take steps to prevent crushing, puncturing, or putting a high degree of pressure on the battery, as this can cause an internal short-circuit, resulting in overheating.

If you must carry a battery-powered device in any baggage, package it to prevent inadvertent activation. For instance, you should pack a cordless power tool in a protective case, with a trigger lock engaged. If there is an on-off switch or a safety switch, tape it in the "off" position.

I once put a fully charged battery in my pocket with my car keys. Only took once to learn the lesson, I must be a liar, liar.

I usually take 8-12 extra rechargeable batteries and a solar Goal Zero charger. The last time they were quite interested in the charger but let me keep it (good thing cause it ain't cheap). After reading this thread it looks like I just have to make sure the contacts on the batteries are insulated. We can charge our cameras, music players and other electronics without a power source now. Just need daylight. It's very cool.

Wow! I'm so glad I asked! Going to repack the spare lithiums as they are not in original packaging.

Thank you all very much!

The "rules" for what can/can't be carried on seem to be fluid. Especially on departure from CUN. I got challenged about spare AA and AAA alkaline batteries a while back and explained that they were for my camera and flashlight. That got me through. But, the guy wanted my cherry cough drops so I gave him a few from the bag.

The last trips into CUN, after getting the green light at customs, we have been stopped and challenged about whether we had food items and/or gifts for people in Mexico.

This week, on departure from CUN, the Federales were setting up 3rd level inspections at our gate, along with sniffer dogs. We watched several travelers have their luggage stripped down and everything in their carry-on spread out on the table and inspected VERY carefully. The pattern of who got selected seemed to be heavily weighted to single travelers. When we went through the gauntlet, I was asked who I was traveling with. Once I pointed to my DW, we were waved through with no further questions.

So, who knows what will (or won't) be a trip point the next time in/out of CUN ... or in/out of our home airport. We all know that TSA stands for "Thousands Standing Around" and what antics a bored workforce might decide to pull off on us.

AnotherBob

P.S. Just be thankful you are not getting all of the government you are paying for !

I have carried extra "regular" batteries along with all the cables, portable speakers and such in my backpack for the past 10 or so trips. Leaving Omaha going thru DFW, Houston, Charlotte with no problems.

Lighters have turned into a fun item for my husband. I would say about 2 years ago he forgot to take out of his pants pocket when departing. Buzzed right through TSA with no problems. We'll that got him started seeing when he would get caught with the lighter in his pocket. He flies about 5-6 times a year including flying to Cancun, Merida & Campeche. He just returned from Campeche Wednesday with his lighter.

The TSA ladies or guy's must have an eye for my husband!

It's funny he always has to tell me he still has his lighter when I talk to him during his trips. Silly man I have.
