Went to the Tulum Ruins, Coba ruins and Gran cenote last year. This year thinking of a day in Playa del Carmen. Was wondering about one of the parks. Are they worth it and what is a good one. Xelha, Akten Chen ?? Also maybe a drive to Valladolid. Has anyone been there and how far is this from Akumal?

V-Town is about 2 hours or less from Akumal. If you want to see other ruins check out Ek Balam about 20 minutes North of V-Town.

what is the price for the day at xelha?
So far 1 vote for xelha.
what about xcaret or akten chen etc? I will only hit one park - i would like to pick the best one.
I would like to snorkel and probably zipline etc.

Xelha is $79 and includes food and drinks. Good place if you enjoy snorkelling, we were there opening to closing.
We did cave tour at Aktun Chen $30, spent a couple hours there and glad we went.

Go to Cenote Xkeken just outside of Valldolid. Great place. There should be a huge fair going on in Valladolid in late January and early February. When I get the exact dates I'll post them here . Went last year and had a ball.
The drive from Tulum is less than two hours. There is a lot to do there.

My friend and I traveled by bus, taxi and colectivo to Valladolid and Ek Balam, among other places. Visiting Ek Balam is like it was visiting the ruins in the early 70s. It is a work in progress, uncrowded and you can walk up everything. Don't miss this. As I recall, we passed through a cute town just before the ruins that looked like it had lots of wood items for sale. We were unable to spend any time in the town so, perhap, someone else can give you advice about it.

My friend, Ha.

I loved Ek Balam and enjoyed Valladolid, we haven't been to other parks but enjoyed Xelha - we were there before they opened and left as they were closing, we could have spent longer there.

Enjoy!

Great info. I will go to Valladolid - tour the city, check out Ek Balam and swim in a cenote. Sounds like a great day. Has anyone tried any good places to eat. Mexican food is always an important topic.

By a doe leed.
Cenote Zaci is probably the one most folks go to. It is right in town. Cenotes de Dzitnup is where you will find Xkeken. Check out the Mercado de Artesanias, right off the plaza for handcrafts, some made on the site..
Campanas is a good place to eat on the plaza. Meson is good but way expensive. If you go to Xkeken there is a place on the way back that makes good poc choc.

Thanks

I was just at Rio Lagartos in mid-October with my marvelous guide Charlie, & it was wonderful! Only a few other visitors; we mostly had the entire place to ourselves. So many bird species! And very tame as well, allowing amazingly close approaches with subsequently terrific photos. Got some excellent shots of flamingos feeding, taking off, & in flight.

Also, if you do get to Playa del Carmen, make sure to get a pedicure at the Fish Spa in Wayan Village. My whole family loved this! Was one of the highlights of our May trip.

Great places - looks like bye-ah-doe-leed will be a hilite of my trip. I may go to Playa del Carmen for the day. Any beach clubs or beach space I should attempt to sprawl out at. Probably get some sun, some lunch some souvenir shopping and race back to Akumal.
