First, thanks to all who made suggestions of what to see and do. Our path was as follows.
We landed at Frankfurt, drove to Saarbrucken where our son and daughter-in-law live. Next morning we all drove to her family's home. It is a village in the state of Baden-Wurttenburg, east of the Black Forest. We spent 4 days with them, seeing the area and eating traditional food and sampling beer and wine. Then the 4 of us drove to Munich. We only had one day there when we had a call that Stefanie's mother had died suddenly. We were all in shock of course, and headed back early next morning. We stayed around in that area until the funeral and did a bit more touring for a couple of days. After the funeral and some adjustments to our plans, Ron and I drove to Garmisch where we were able to visit the Zugspitze in the Alps - the highest point in Germany. Next was on the Vienna for a couple of days. then we drove back toward Saarbrucken, taking time to visit some vinyards in the Rhine valley. From saarbrucken, we visited Trier and Saarschlief.
It was a total of 3 weeks and despite seeing so many wonderful places and meeting lots of our new family and having time with Alan and Stefanie, our memories are dampened by our loss. Anyway, some pictures are coming.

Love the photos, nipper!! the architecture looks like it's right out of a movie!! That's so sad about Stefanie's mom. Sounds like there was plenty to see in her home area.

The lake looks snorkelable, but I'm betting it was very cold, eh?

I guess that was the ultimate in good/bad timing Nipper. I am sure it was a great comfort to them for you to be present though. Really enjoying your pictures.

Yes, crunch, good/bad timing. We are happy that we did get to meet her and see what a loving family that Alan has joined.
Thanks for your thoughts everyone. The area where they live is beautiful - lots of small villages, towns, a couple if cities, farms and vinyards, parks, walking/cycling paths, rivers - we loved it.

Oktoberfest - we were there in september but we found lots of biergartens, beer halls and many fine beers!

Munich - Haufbrauhaus

New City hall

lunch at the food market

The Zugspitze is a mountain that has skiing, climbing, hiking and easy access to the top. We took a train to the mountain then a cog wheel train through a tunnel to the Zugplatz where the skiing starts. Then there is a short cable car ride to the observation area at the top - food and another biergarten! We took another cable car ride down from there to the very bottom. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed it very much.

Seeing your pictures makes me realize I need to get back to Europe for a vacation. My husband has never been and I just know he would enjoy it so much. We gotta do this before we can't!

Sorry for your loss but thanks for the pictures.

Sorry to hear about Stephanie's mother

I loved your photos, they brought back many good memories - made me regret not going up the Zugspitz ... but that almost 50 euro cost seemed excessive ... until I saw your photos - gorgeous!

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the report nipper. Love all the beer pics. And sorry for your loss.

What is in the sippy cup looking thing and what's the brown stuff that looks like maple syrup?

My sympathies Nipper.

Your pictures are gorgeous! And ironically I just used a match out of my Hofbrahaus (sp) matches from the
location we have here in Kentucky (Newport).

No idea Bosco. I was concentrating on the beer! We were at an outdoor cafe and folks were having coffee and stuff so the sippy cup may have been sugar. Per haps the other is vinegar for chips (french fries).

This was Ron's

These were in Garmisch

and Vienna

First, I'm sorry for the bad news.

But, your trip report is great! Thanks for the pics...
Years ago, we found the Hofbrauhaus by noticing a couple guys dragging their drunk friend down the street!
Vienna is a cool walkable place, once you get to the city center.

This is my idea of a bier selection.

Is that motor oil or beer on the left?

It's a meal in a glass crunch!

So our last stay was back in Saarbrucken where the kids live.

There are some neat buildings here, despite the losses in WWII - it is right on the border with France.

There are parks and green space and bike/walking paths all along the river

At one of the parks, we found a mariachi band and a celebration of Mexico.

We took 2 day trips from Saarbrucken. One was to Saarschliefe - a lookoff where you can see the Saar River double back on itself. HTere were some amazing hiking paths there too.

The other was to Trier - established in the year 16. There is a gate built by the Romans and later made into a church but now back to its basic roots.

The pedestrian area is huge and encompasses several churches, the market, Roman baths and many stores, cafes, ice cream parlours etc.

So sorry for your loss. I imagine that did put quite a damper on the trip.
That being said, thank you so much for the pics. I'm seeing some familiar places and having some nice memories come back. I must get back there again some time.
