I was over on that "other" travel forum. And there is a big discussion going on about not using collectivos that they should only be for locals. Someone else said the locals don't like the "Gringos" on the bus. Personally I cannot afford to take taxis everywhere. This is the first I have heard of that. I would love to see the feeling of others on this. I know everything there needs to be taken with a grain of salt..but.. It brings be back to my honeynoom when the locals in Antigua all thought that because we could travel and stay at a resort we were all rich. They were trying to sell very cheap/crappy t-shirts for $15 US (which at the time was over $20 CAD) and I kept telling them that it was too much money. (The price NEVER went down the enitre time we were there, and it was 18 yrs ago.)

some of the TA experts don't like colectivos and state such As previous posters, it is a money earner for many colectivo drivers so they appreciate all the business

A past issue has been the large luggage people try to bring on them when moving hotels etc

The only thing I would add is if there are locals waiting, I would offer to let them go ahead of me and catch the next one. They are headed to and from work, vacationers have more time to be courteous.

Thx, KWing, That is our boy in his winter coat on his first snow hike! If he doesn't wear it, he turns into snowball man! Yes Sherry thanks for the reminder to be aware of our courtesies...we might be in a hurry to get to Tulum but the local folks have actual stuff to do!

Great point made Sherry. We do the same for worker's, elder's and kids. I have been shocked though as to see tourists rush a collectivo and almost knock over the poor people just trying to get home after a day's work. UGG

Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I gotta think that without us gringo tourists, half of those "locals" wouldn't be there. I'm thinking most of them appreciate our tourism dollars. I like Sherry's idea too - there a lots of colectivos. Not to mention, many taxi drivers will negotiate the same rate for quick trips. We took taxis to and fro from Akumal to the Palladium every time because its a short jaunt, and every taxi driver was fine with 40 pesos for that ride. I probably would not use the colectivos for large groups or if you have luggage.

And I'll add that the locals are always very nice and quite helpful when we're stopping somewhere new, happy to tell us where to get off. But definitely, if you're going to carry a bunch of baggage, don't take a collectivo...they're busy and in a hurry. Quick in, sit, quick out...be thoughtful.

The driver would actually yell from across 307 when he saw us walking out of the Grand Palladium and wait for us to cross so we could go south. He also stopped in front of the Bahia to yell at another couple and waited for them to cross. He dropped off a couple at the Akumal stop and they looked lost - so he points across the street and yells - La Playa - La Playa. I was reading on the AI board that now you have to stop and catch another colectivo around the Grand Sirenis??? Anyone going down soon staying north of Akumal care to check this out?

I hope we get proper info soon, but it has to do with a fight between the Tulum and the Playa taxis & collectivos, but they may have worked something out. I hope so.

That was going on for a few days in mid October, but it's was sorted out by the 18th. We did have some "inconviences" on the 15th between XpuHa and the Bahia complex.

ORIGINAL: gal4giants Sherry & TT nailed it. On our last full day in October, our new friend & cenote guide Nick from Avatar Adventures, told us the new colectivo along the beach road in Tulum is for locals only going to/leaving work, that they won't stop for tourists. Will try to confirm this in December. Taxi's make a mint along the Beach Road...so I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. Thank you - when chicagocraig mentioned the colectivo on the beachroad in August - I thought cool that will save us some $$$, but.......maybe not.
