7 months after last visiting Akumal someone attempted to withdrawn $460.00 cash in Mexico using a fraudulent ATM card with my card numbers.

Fortunately they didn't know the password and the bank froze the account. I only pay in cash in Mexico, usually bringing it with me and withdrawing pesos from the ATM machines if I run out.

I used the ATM machine outside of the jewellery store in Akumal once and the ATM in the Super Chomak once on that trip. It's the only time I used that card. Somehow the numbers on the card were copied. I always thought ATM withdrawals were the way to go if I need cash. Now I know it's not safe either.

Thanks for the warning. Lately, I have just been taking cash and keeping it in the condo safe.

Yep, they most likely used a skimmer.... very small device that fits into the card slot on the machine, and copies the data from your card's magnetic strip as you slide it into the machine. The identity thief comes along sometime later, removes the device, plugs it into a USB port and downloads tons of credit and debit card data.

Several have been caught and arrested using them on gas pumps around here.

Have to admit, using the ATM at ABR did make me nervous because of these little gadgets.

Good Advice.  I usually take only cash - mix of US$$ and Pesos.  Only use ATM in emergency.

Well that's too bad, I hate to carry too much cash with me and was hoping to take some/get some while there, but this makes me leary.

We've had some skimming issues around here lately too. Don't know if any of this will help or not, but here's an article on how to spot the skimmers, and precautions to take for avoiding them.

One of the issues is that when your bank is suspect your account will be locked. I just spent an hour (I had to go in person into my bank) dealing with reports/paperwork to get it functioning again. That would be a nightmare if you were in Mexico.

If memory serves I have heard about an issue with that ATM at the Chomak before. Maybe best to just avoid it altogether.

So for those who just take cash with them ... I assume you mean dollars? Where are you going to exchange them? TSA? In October their hours are super sketchy ... sometimes they are there when they say they will be ... sometimes not so much.

Maybe ATMs inside a bank are safer? Are there any ATMs in banks that are easy to get to? Seems like I remember a Scotia or a Santander (one of which is associated with Bank of America) in Tulum in the strip mall with the San Fransisco.

Maybe it would be a good idea to change your pin as soon as you get home? The whole money thing can be a pain - forget credit cards it has to be cash, pesos are a better deal IF you get them there and not here, now they don't really want dollars anyway, getting the safe to work, finding somewhere to exchange them. Every year we do something different and every year I think we are doing it wrong!

Anyway, thanks for the head's up SD. Sorry that happened.

I buy pesos at the currency exchange before I leave, and like Rose, only use the ATM in case of needing emergency cash (which in this case was to purchase silver jewellery ) I'm going to make sure I have enough pesos next time. Can always exchange them back if I don't spend them all. Or use them on the next trip.

Well that royally sux SD - I undestand that silver purchase was an emergency though

The last 2 years dh and I take a pre-loaded "visa" and use the atm at the resort to get cash (pesos) - buy the time we get home whatever IS left on the card is used asap - ya know like that first grocery run when ya get back home.

I know this sounds crazy, but it's so simple for me to replace my ATM card through my credit union...would it be smart just to replace it after yourr trip to Mexico? Only use that card for cash withdrawals at ATMs, then cancel it and get a new one on return. Makes sense huh?

Sorry for your inconvenience Schnauz.

Doug - dh does that if/when he uses a credit card in MX.

SD - I've also read where some people set up just an account for vaction - nothing else linked to it - so just in case a thief does get ahold of your info sooner rather than 7 months later - at least they'll only get so much.

We always try to avoid using a debit card anywhere other than our own bank's ATM's however we have not hesitated to use our VISA cards worldwide as they provide fraud protection (as does MasterCard, AMX,etc.).. We always make sure to carry enough cash for those places who don't take plastic and use the cards with those who do. Just make sure to notify your credit card company about the time you will be traveling and they will flag your account so it doesn't get frozen while you're there and then check your balances regularly to look for any unknown transactions. You won't get charges for any transactions you didn't make.

Always best to use a ATM at a bank location. Never had a problem.

That IS scary, Schnauz! We use ours all the time down there, but try to only use the same one every time - a secret location! I have heard tell of electronic scanning devices that can get the info off your card, but obviously this wasn't as sophisticated as they didn't get your PIN number - thank goodness!
Thanks for the head's up. My bank will be pleased that I won't be just asking for US $1's this time. But I do like to have the pesos I get from the ATM....

I think I got it figured out. Did you stay at a resort? If so, they will typically want to have copies of CC number. Also a rental car place. Some bad folks will try to use number to purchase..but not having PIN.....saved your situation. Again, I assume.

I shred my customers CC purchases to make sure no criminal in my company would have access to those CC numbers.

Didn't stay at a resort, CC. Actually it was an ATM not a credit card that was compromised.
Sounds like the safest bet is to bring a preloaded vacation credit card for emergency cash as Kwing does. Always thought the ATM was the way to go.

Barata.... have you considered buying pesos at the currency exchange in Canada at the airport prior to boarding? Seems like there are quite a few kiosks... at least in Vancouver Airport. Or ordering them from your bank. I buy them in town here at the exchange and the exchange rates are excellent.

Frankly, using at ATM anywhere should make you nervous because of those little gadgets. My ex husband is a Senior Fraud investigator with a leading Canadian bank...and the stories I could tell you - not just about ATM machines, but any POS terminal - anywhere. Protect your PIN.

ATM fraud can happen anywhere. I was lucky enough to catch someone using my card number at a bank machine I would never be at. I happened to be online checking my account status and noticed a 1000.00 deposit.................which means they were then going to withdraw 1000.00. I called my bank. they froze my account. I got a new card within the hour. End of that transaction.

I have used the ATM in the store across from chomak on numerous occasions and never had an issue..............just be careful!

Fins, I have used that one as well on previous trips. As well as the Super Chomak one.

But how can you just be careful if there is some hidden device in there copying your information? Sure has made me double think ATM withdrawals.

Was your card a chip card Schnauz? I wonder if that gives us a bit more protection re PIN numbers.
We live in a small town, and thanks for reminding me, cause I have to give them at least a months notice to get our US $ for tip money - I don't know what they'd say if I asked for pesos! I find the exchange booths at the airport to be a little usurious.

You're crazy - airport exchange places are know to give the worst rates - you would lose less money if your ATM card was stolen

Kinda like when my wife's credit card was stolen - never reported it as the thief was charging less than my wife

Yes, it was a chip card Barata. I don't know how a thief could ever guess my PIN number, but it was a real pain to spend an hr at the bank at the bank trying to clear it up as they froze immediately yesterday afternoon. (considering it was my business account).

I'm pretty sure you can order pesos from any bank. I always get great rates at the currency exchange store in Abby here.

Sundog... I just checked the foreign exchange rate at Van Airport and they're offering
10 CAD = 12.95807 MXN That's not a bad rate. So... not too
