Thanks for the warning. Lately, I have just been taking cash and keeping it in the condo safe. Annie

Yep, they most likely used a skimmer.... very small device that fits into the card slot on the machine, and copies the data from your card's magnetic strip as you slide it into the machine. The identity thief comes along sometime later, removes the device, plugs it into a USB port and downloads tons of credit and debit card data. Several have been caught and arrested using them on gas pumps around here. Have to admit, using the ATM at ABR did make me nervous because of these little gadgets.

Good Advice. I usually take only cash - mix of US$$ and Pesos. Only use ATM in emergency.

Well that's too bad, I hate to carry too much cash with me and was hoping to take some/get some while there, but this makes me leary. We've had some skimming issues around here lately too. Don't know if any of this will help or not, but here's an article on how to spot the skimmers, and precautions to take for avoiding them. http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/01/more-on-spotting-a-t-m-skimmers/

One of the issues is that when your bank is suspect your account will be locked. I just spent an hour (I had to go in person into my bank) dealing with reports/paperwork to get it functioning again. That would be a nightmare if you were in Mexico.

If memory serves I have heard about an issue with that ATM at the Chomak before. Maybe best to just avoid it altogether.

So for those who just take cash with them ... I assume you mean dollars? Where are you going to exchange them? TSA? In October their hours are super sketchy ... sometimes they are there when they say they will be ... sometimes not so much. Maybe ATMs inside a bank are safer? Are there any ATMs in banks that are easy to get to? Seems like I remember a Scotia or a Santander (one of which is associated with Bank of America) in Tulum in the strip mall with the San Fransisco. Maybe it would be a good idea to change your pin as soon as you get home? The whole money thing can be a pain - forget credit cards it has to be cash, pesos are a better deal IF you get them there and not here, now they don't really want dollars anyway, getting the safe to work, finding somewhere to exchange them. Every year we do something different and every year I think we are doing it wrong! Anyway, thanks for the head's up SD. Sorry that happened.

I know this sounds crazy, but it's so simple for me to replace my ATM card through my credit union...would it be smart just to replace it after yourr trip to Mexico? Only use that card for cash withdrawals at ATMs, then cancel it and get a new one on return. Makes sense huh? Sorry for your inconvenience Schnauz.

Doug - dh does that if/when he uses a credit card in MX. SD - I've also read where some people set up just an account for vaction - nothing else linked to it - so just in case a thief does get ahold of your info sooner rather than 7 months later - at least they'll only get so much.

I think I got it figured out. Did you stay at a resort? If so, they will typically want to have copies of CC number. Also a rental car place. Some bad folks will try to use number to purchase..but not having PIN.....saved your situation. Didn't stay at a resort, CC. Actually it was an ATM not a credit card that was compromised. Sounds like the safest bet is to bring a preloaded vacation credit card for emergency cash as Kwing does. Always thought the ATM was the way to go. Barata.... have you considered buying pesos at the currency exchange in Canada at the airport prior to boarding? Seems like there are quite a few kiosks... at least in Vancouver Airport. Or ordering them from your bank. I buy them in town here at the exchange and the exchange rates are excellent.

I have used the ATM in the store across from chomak on numerous occasions and never had an issue..............just be careful! Fins, I have used that one as well on previous trips. As well as the Super Chomak one. But how can you just be careful if there is some hidden device in there copying your information? Sure has made me double think ATM withdrawals.
