I have always booked ahead when travelling to this area in Mexico but am tempted to try just showing up and seeing if I could get any sweet deals. It could be a bit of a risk but may pan out as well. Has anyone done this in Tulum or similar area and had success or maybe bad experiences in doing so. I am not particularly picky about which specific place I end up but would like a nice place preferably on the beach... thoughts??

I'd guess it depends on when you are planning on traveling ..low season or mid season I'd say no problems. See many signs for rooms on the beach side of Boca Paila often.

If getting the best deal is your goal, the internet is your friend. I found my favorite room at OM during a limited sale on another website for $56. I dare you to just show during high or low season and beat that.

However, if you just want to go down and look around and find a special room that fits you, go for it.

it is a bit of both. I am thinking about low season. wouldn't try it during a busy time as the odds of success would not be good. i like the idea of booking something for the first couple nights and then strolling the beach until i find something compelling and then see what kind of deal I could get. Makes sense to me that you should be able to get bottom end prices on that arrangement as it would likely just sit empty otherwise. I was curious if anyone has tried this in the past and had any success or failures and what recommendations may surface from the more experiences travellers in the area.

That's what we're doing this time down. Either that or Xcalak or Xamach Dos.

Last year we spent 3 weeks, and only booked the first 2 nights in Playa del Carmen, and the last 5 on Isla Mujeres. We had no trouble finding places to stay wherever we went as it was the off season.

I am quite experienced at this "task" you have at hand!! Your best bet is to book your first two nights and scope. If you don't reserve at all, you're going to loose that wonderful "first day" feeling and you'll spend the day searching-beat from not sleeping the night before, travelling and tired from dragging luggage. Totally not worth it-I know!. Once you find what you're looking for and kinda know where you want to go next, use a computer and search cheap hotel websites. You will find something on the beach under 60US easy. Do a beach/bar crawl and search for a good rate in person. DO NOT allow yourself to get burned out fretting and searching. I did, the first time and blew 2 days. There are good prices available for Tulum, Playa, and Isla. Do a search for cheap hotels. Some of these prices match their walk-up rate. Another hint-I always wind my trip down staying somewhat near the airport for so many common reasons. Check out Puerto Morelos for your last couple of nights.

Bringing a PC to Mexico (especially Tulum) is everything I'm against. No offense but that's just me. Too much work. But your right. The walk up prices aren't usually any cheaper.

Awesome idea! But... There are really a ton of deals on the internet. I found a couple places right in Playa Del Carmen. One for 42 dollars a night and another for 45 dollars a night. Mid December prices too. Sweet deals. Found a place in Mahahual for 75 bucks a night too. Deals everywhere to be found. I would rather kill some time at home searching for an awesome deal than down there killin great beach time, hehehee. I would book a decent cheap place, then go check out a bunch of places for the next time you go.

But, that's just me, hehehehe

Cheers!

Doug

What's your Mahahual deal if you don't mind me asking?

PlayaKath,

I just look on line and find em. I found a place on ****(Vacation Rental By Owner) website. Under MAhahual. I found one place, depending on when you want to go, it's 65 to 100 dollars a night. Looks like a fine room. And beach is right nearby too. So many places, So little time. Hehehhee

Cheers!

Doug

I think that waiting until the last minute and then looking for internet specials is the way to go. La Mezzanine, La Zebra, and El Pez all have awesome October deals going right now. I'm considering grabbing the La Mezz $54 a night offer.

It's their "Buddha Den" rooms that are 50% off. King size beds. No ocean view.
Their seaview rooms are 30% off - so $119 a night - still a pretty good deal too.
