Hey all,

We are booked at La Joya this January, and was wondering if anybody here has any advice/reviews/tips about the place. I did a little research before booking.... TA reviews etc. but would like a little "real world" feedback if I could. We are there for ten nights and are really looking forward to the relaxed quiet atmosphere of Akumal. We have been there on day trips from Playa, but this will be our first time staying there.

Thanks in advance
KTS

Akumal is NOT Playa....and Playa is not Akumal....so the wildest night life which is LBV closes at 10pm.....Half moon bay is shallow so bring the appropriate things you will need to neekid snorkel and all will be well on your trip.

Neekid snoreling is not recommended in HMB but can be done....enjoy your trip!

Hi Kenny,

We stayed at La Joya in 3/2011 and I wrote a review complete with photos. That may have some of what you are looking for:

Kenny , welcome to this board . I'm gonna wrap it up on this thread instead of spreading it around . I think I remember friends whining about paying twenty pesos for a cold beer at Super Chomak , the same price as at La Cueva del Pescador , a restaurant . I won't beat you to death with too many recommendations to make a stop in PA at the Chedraui for supplies but a transfer stop is still my best advice . They had some snorkel gear there as well but I would buy some on line or otherwise from the comfort of home and try them and adjust them at your local pool . I personally have a hockey bag full of masks and gear that I collect from thrift stores for a couple dollars and  sanitize and reuse . We take a spare mask to share and leave it behind if it isn't a perfect fit or if we need the return space . For the condo packing we each bring the maximum rolling suitcase and the carry ons . Over time we bring a few things like a sharp , sheathed paring knife and a little cutting board for fruit , our own old rag for cofee spills and an old towel to use as a doormat , flip flops , running shoes and good strap on sandals that you can walk into Halfmoon Bay with instead of fins if you wish and that's just for a male , a small soft sided cooler for heading up to Akumal bay with your cheap Chedraui Sol - forget those other brands - we have a cooler from Canadian Tire with a shoulder strap , coffee filters cause you only need ten , some old margarine containers for take out and leftovers or in the cooler , a good pair of absorbent but not particularly eyecatching towels for seat saving and sitting on up at Akumal Bay , a beach blanket for the same purpose perhaps an old sheet and leave it behind , laptop/notebook - decent wifi at La Joya ,cameras , binoculars for turtles and Parrotfish and rays that are visible from shore , a compact flashlight for walking home in the dark - mine is a crank light that does not need batteries and I have given these to security gaurds and other locals as they never need expensive batteries , a shirt for a rashgaurd/snorkelling sunscreen  and potions , lotions , notions and the like . The suitcase lets you take home some booze as well . La Joya is awesome ! We had the middle ground floor room and it was great . I was a little worried about privacy and my naked wandering inside the condo but it didn't seem to be a problem . There is a shared rooftop sitting area and we never had any beach seating issues in March high season . There is a nice young guy on site a lot of the time for any questions or advice . There were novels in the rooms and the office if you need one . You can snorkel right out in front of the building but I would walk a little north to the empty lot where there is a better path into the water and swim to the north a bit the first few times out staying behind the fairly obvious north end reef line until you are used to the wave action that can be strong at times . I still wouldn't go out past the reef (in either bay - ever) but you can explore back around the coral heads in front of La Joya with more confidence . The shallow exit from the water can be a potential hazard so pick out a landmark so you can return to a path you are familiar with . Have your transfer driver swing through the pueblo for you and then across the bridge rather than using the retorno so you can see what's in the pueblo for later walking trips . There may be some bikes around to borrow or perhaps rent to tour down around by Yal Ku and Que Onda or over to the pueblo . Enjoy

Kenny2skidoos (snowmobiles)? We stayed there in 2010 and loved it. Booked another stay this year. We had a blank lot next to us last visit but there is a new building so the fireflies we used to watch have probably moved into the jungle. If you are looking for a condo experience its great. We like to eat in about half the time and the kitchen was well stocked with dishes and cooking supplies. We have stayed in 3 other facilities and La Hoya is clean and as good as any. The maintenance was being addressed when we visited before and as rucruizin noted the sea is hard on everything. Overall a good Akumal representation.

Wow, thanks to all for the info! there is a lot.

@gitrdone we are on the ground floor in a studio on the right facing the building from the beach. wonder if this is the same room you had? And yes snowmobiles, but they truly are ski-doo's. The name was given to me by a friend who is First Nations. He called it my Official Indian Name.(his words not mine)

Thanks again all

Kenny2skidoos; We rented #2 and #3 and loved them. We shared with friends and the common patio works well for eating and socializing. Access to the beach is wonderful from your studio. Enjoy!!! (I used to run Polaris)

Hey. Gir r, Which patio is a common patio? If you don't have the two rooms rented, isn't the one in fron of the studio, a private patio for the studio? I'm not excited about sharing my patio, especially in the morning in my jammies and yesterday's makeup Or with a smoker. Sorry, nothing personal against smokers, just very allergic (to everything ).

We have stayed in 2&3 with friends so I don't know the particulars about the deck. I do know both 2&3 have an access door to the deck area. Loco Gringo might have an idea about the area you a concerned with.

When we stayed in the studio #3, we used the table and chairs which is right in front of the door. It's a cozy space and is definitely your patio. The folks who were in #2 next door had a table and chairs right in front of their big, front window and always used that. It just made sense and worked out great. And, I felt I had enough privacy.

Hey Kenny, as it turned out, I didn't end up staying in the studio. I stayed in #6 for a couple nights, then had to move to #4, both 1 bedroom condos.

The refrigerator is a dorm room size, little mini fridge. Also, while I was there, they started to put in a pool. I don't know how far along that is... maybe people can give you updates.

This I know... if studio #3 is rented, the patio in front is private, for that unit only. You now have a pool front unit. If that makes you happy, great. If not, you might coonsider changing to 4, or 6. Unit 6 was nicer, way nicer, if you have the option.

I prefer the units on the top, for view... but the ground floor has great, easy access to the beach.

If you look at my trip report, there are lots of pictures of the beach, and even a couple of the pool being dug.
