After a good nights sleep, I was up early. The sunrise was spectacular!

I made a pot of coffee. Did I mention that our condo was equipped with everything one would need? There were plenty of plates, bowls, cups, margarita glasses, pots & pans etc.

I also forgot to mention that we picked up a couple of necessities on the first night at the Super Chomak. We bought milk, coffee and some cervaza. The prices were crazy, but we had to have coffee!

I pre-booked a dive a couple of weeks in advance with Akumal Dive Adventures for 9:00 am. We loaded up all of our dive gear in the Tsuru and did the short drive to the dive shop around 8:45. We carted all of our gear in a couple of large suitcases up the steps to the dive shop. It was locked up solid. The note on the white board says “Gone fishing, back at 11:00” What the heck? We were booked with a $50 deposit two weeks in advance. Bummer. There was no sense hanging around here for two hours so we threw the dive gear back in to the boot (had to throw that in for my South African wife!) and headed for Puerto Adventuras for supplies.

Sharon sat in the back. Mrs. TB sat shotgun and took pictures of Sharon.

We had never been into Puerto Adventuras before but we found the Chedraui easily enough. $1800 pesos later we were stocked up with tequila, fruit, veggies, tequila, limes, cervaza, milk, eggs, snacks, bacon, bread, tequila and steak.

We headed back to Akumal with our booty and put it all in its place. It was getting close to 11:00 so we drove back to the dive shop to see if Jose and Mario had any luck fishing.

Jose and Mario are there when we arrived. They immediately remembered Mrs TB and me from our trip in January 2011. I tell Jose that we had a dive booked with him for 9:00 am and he says he knew nothing about it, but is very apologetic just the same. Perhaps there reservations lady forgot to send it to him. No problem, he says we can dive at 1:00. We unload our dive gear and head back to Playa Caribe for a sandwich before we dive.

12:45 and back at Akumal Dive Adventures. Jose has a sheepish look on his face. He holds up his appointment book and there is my name in the August 2nd, 9:00 am slot for 3 divers. He apologizes again, and says he wrote the reservation in the book when he first received it, two weeks earlier and had forgotten about it. No worries Jose! Lets dive! Morgan’s Reef, here we come.

As usual Mrs. TB is at the controls of the Nikon S8100. I have a difficult enough time swimming and chewing gum at the same time. No need to over burden myself with trying to take pictures. The coral will be thankful.

It did not take long to meet this chap.

Hello there gorgeous!

What? I AM smiling!

I hand my hands full trying to keep Sharon from inviting this guy back to Playa Caribe for supper.

We saw lots of Gray Angels everywhere we dove.

This ray was cruising in the distance. I just noticed those divers behind the ray now. I did not know we had company.

We had a great first dive and headed back to the condo for a shower and refreshments.

Next on the agenda, LBV for happy hour!

Sharon had a goal to try every drink on the menu before we left Akumal. I think she succeeded. Two or three times maybe.

We finished our drinks at LBV and headed back to Playa Caribe. For more margaritas. Did I mention that Mrs. TB and Sharon like margaritas?

Mrs. TB managed to catch this bright light that was lingering over HMB.

And so ends another day in paradise.

I forgot to mention that we met another LG member and his wife at LBV for happy hour. We had arranged the meeting via email in order to organize a fishing trip with Francisco.

Luv your last pic. Also dive pix. Just starting to learn about dive pix. Was there a strobe(s) used on these? If so, were they used at full intensity? Does one need to be a minimum distance from subject to get full color?

very, very nice photos and a great trip report.  Thanks.

Looks like a wonderful time - it is great to see some of the sealife with names, will help for my snorkelling in the future.

Keep it coming!

We do not have a strobe but it is on the wish list.
If we use the camera's built in flash there is too much scatter so we keep it turned off. It makes for dark pictures on depths greater than 60 feet, and even less on cloudy days.
It does a nice job at pictures in the 12" to 15 foot range if the light is good.
We use a red filter on the housing for colour correction.

This is a good site for learning about underwater photography: Underwater photography guide. I wish I would have discovered it before I bought our camera and housing.

Oh my gosh I love your dive pictures. Gorgeous. Would you mind if I borrowed one of the turtle pics for my desktop?

Awesome pics ! Mind if I ask what kind of camera you used for the underwater photos? I am thinking of buying the Sealife DC1400 underwater camera.

Also, love the Sunrise photo! It is perfect!

Cheers!

Doug

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. My wife is the underwater photograapher and I will pass them on to her.
Doug, the camera is a Nikon S8100 with an Ikelite underwater housing. We originally bought the camera because it had good reviews and Ikelite happened to make a housing for it. Now we use it strictly for diving because if it ever got damaged on one of our hikes we would be stuck with a $300 housing for a discontiinued camera.
The above water photos are shot with a Sony DSC-HX9V.
