I decided I better get a vest for this trip, as I may be snorkeling a good bit alone, unless I can find folks that are also part fish .

I bought one that I returned one year because it SUCKED! It was a cheaper one - the blow-up kind - I believe ~$30. It rose around my neck and about strangled me, and I won't talk about what the strap does, but

I think I have seen posts of a different type which is more like a real ski vest? A regular vest/jacket fit I think? I can't get the Cadillac, but something good, that works and mostly will NOT choke me to death would be great! Any ideas?

Usually when the cheaper vests (which we have) ride up it is because there is too much air in them ... I wear mine without air my dh is a sinker so he puts air in and when he first used it he hated it because of, ahem, ride up he tried letting out some of the air and it worked fine .... those other more expensive vests look like they would be great though but I am too cheap to buy one ..... I am sure there will be people who have links for you .....

Do you have sporting goods store or a dive shop you could go to so you can see some different ones and try them on? I know it's not the answer you really want, but the right one will be the one you're most comfortable in. I'd suggest looking at ones that the crotch straps. They're not uncomfortable and using the crotch strap can lessen the chances of the vest riding up around your neck when you're in the water.

Hi chica,

Mine is much like Nipper's, but it has a couple pockets also. I believe this is the one:

Thanks all!

And Crunch! I was hoping you would reply because you mentioned a lot of detail about yours once, and I remember the pockets for putting stuff in! That works out better than the swimsuit legs or bra! LOL

I like the Scubapro Cruiser as well, nice zipper pocket at the bottom front, side zipper, good fit!

This one from Innovative (as Nipper said)

Has the neoprene stretchy back that wraps around and velcroes in the front.  Helps keep you a bit warm, and keeps it from riding up.  Nice because no zippers!

Also comes with the emergency whistle, and is easy to inflate, deflate even while swimming.

Runs about $50 new, or half that at an online auction site.  They run about one size big in my experience.

Thanks for starting this thread Isla Chica as I need a new one, too. I have a Body Glove vest I bought from Costco. It rides up at the neck and knocks the back straps of my mask constantly causing it to shift and water to get in, and is really bulky and doesn't dry fast (so no snorkeling on go-home day).

I think the inflatable ones are the best because you can adjust the amount of air depending on your own bouyancy. I'm a natural floater, especially in salt water. I don't wear my vest. Just put a bit of air in it for safety, and tie my camera to it and pull it along. And as Nancy said, less air, less ride up. Also much easier to pack.

Nipper, I like that ScubaPro vest. Is it inflatable so that if I wanted to dive down, I could release the air for diving? I have never had a snorkel vest before, but figured as I get older, I should be a bit more safety concious. Well, that, and I'm lazy, so a vest will keep me from having to tread as much. lol

Yes, the yellow part inflates on the ScubaPro and the Innovative.

I've been using that ScubaPro vest for years and dive frequently. Very easy to let the air out and re-fill.

I bought this one and used it during our annual Akumal trip in April.. I sink like a rock so the neoprene gives me a bit of bouyancy and I float higher than the common $29.99 plastic with crotch straps that I used for 5-6 years. However, the Cruiser does creep up around my neck like my old one so consider going down a size or even two. I wear XL and I bought a L. My DW may have to sew on the annoying straps to stop the creep.

And most importantly - no crotch strap!

Crunch, does that one rise up around your neck?

And, did you get a small or medium? (check your PM)

medium, and it does rise some, but usually it is because i put way too much air in.

Thanks for the reminder!!! If I don't write it on my hand or put a sticky note on the computer, it gets forgotten these days!

I'm a bit concerned... the one I like with the pockets (like Crunch's) only comes in Jr or adult M/L! I don't want another that chokes me! Is that normal sizing?
