Thanks Craig, and thanks to everyone. These threads a truly a collaborative effort! Watching 92L as well, Craig... we'll see if can survive the dry air. The next wave coming off the African coast has a pretty good punch to it as well.

We're definitely into Cape Verde season, and the western Caribbean season hasn't even cranked up yet!

Soooo glad to hear there was minimal damage to the Akumal area .... exept for the turtle nests

I just heard from our friends Bob and Caroline at Casa Carolina in Xcalak. This is what they had to say:

"We have been out and checked all the property, and there's actually less clean-up to do than we anticipated. Mostly, there are a lot of leaves on the ground. We and our guests should be able to take nice long showers for quite a while now!"

That is really goood news for the folks down in the Costa Maya area!

EXCELLENT!!!! I read this morning elsewhere that max winds were only around 60mph, so that shouldn't have done much damage anywhere... I think a lot of us have had fiercer storms in our areas this summer. Storm surge can bring a lot of crap, and it looks bad if you haven't seen it before, but it's just clean up, as are palm fronds.

It is sad about the nests. I do like to believe though that the strongest, the ones that are destined to make it to maturity (and so few do), are the ones that survive this stuff. It's still nesting season too, so there will still be mamas hitting the beaches to lay eggs. Even if the markers didn't make it, there's still going to be nests that did. All is not lost.

Sorry, Dollar. The "dude's" a lady.

Runs a dive shop over on Cozumel. Right, Reef?

I guess I can understand where she's coming from now as a tour operator over there when there's a storm. I still remember our Cozumel trip during the swine flu fiasco. Positively dead on the island and it tore my corazon out to see such financial devastation there for no reason.

Not sure what you're trying to say with the question and the "" She's got her name on her profile, you can google her, but you seem to know her name. Yup, she does run a shop there. I haven't dived with her or her shop, but I know her business has an excellent reputation and lots of repeat customers. I didn't realize she was on this board until yesterday when I saw a new name and clicked to see the profile.

One thing I will say for the dive shops I use in Cozumel in Akumal, and the places I stay in these destinations and elsewhere in Q.Roo, I have never once had an owner or manager tell me, "come on down, the weather's fine," when that was not the case. In Mexico and elsewhere, I have had times where I've been told it's likely going to be a day or two of bad weather, and possible an additional day or two of either no diving or not great visibility, so if either of those possibilities was going to ruin my vacation, consider rescheduling. When I've been places and something's developed during our stay, I've never had any business not be totally honest with me as far as what to expect and what the options were as far as what we might want to choose to do. Maybe I've been lucky, but it's never been a question of what's in the best interest of their wallets.

My first trip to Q.Roo was shortly after Gilbert. No denying what a mess that monster made. We had a trip planned for just after Wilma hit. We did have to push it back a few weeks, change accommodations, etc., but nobody either in Cozumel or Akumal sugar coated anything. We knew what we were going to and chose to still go. These people, as you know, rely on tourism to make a living, but they want happy, repeat customers, not one timers who have a bad experience and then go home to post their negative reviews on every board they can find.

I see you got two got off on the wrong foot. I would bet though that if you ever crossed paths, you'd see she's quite a nice person. Sometimes what comes across typing on a keyboard is a lot different then if it's in an actual, real life conversation.

I'm completely willing to go with that!

Tomas, your comment about the Mexicans being in denial really hit a nerve and I did find it offensive. Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but it sure came off as a derogatory statement about them - and obviously, I vehemently came to their defense because I know it to be an inaccurate statement! I also didn't intend to start a debate with you by stating my opinion that your remark was offensive - so when you came back on the attack, I bit back

As far as my screen name, I actually used to have CozChristi, but so much time had gone by since I actually posted (had only been reading) I couldn't remember log-in info so I tried registering again. That name was taken, so I registered again back in May under this name when I was looking for a place to stay and info on Akumal. I am not trying to hide who I am.

And no, I would never encourage people to come down if we were in the path of danger. If you knew me a little more, and knew my history with hurricanes, taking strangers in, etc. - your opinion wold be much different. Just as my opinion of you is different after reading your wife's GREAT trip report from May - I feel like I got to know you and see that I probably misinterpreted the intent of your remark! I know we really WOULD get along if we met in person.

So, I will publicly apologize for my snarkiness towards you and believe that your comment about the locals was not intentional

Hi, I'm Christi, nice to meet you :)

Coztriathlete,

I can vouch for Tomas. He is a real nice guy who has always respected and enjoyed the locals and they him.

He is very tongue in cheek and what he meant by his reference to the locals is that for our 20 plus years of mexico travel whether you get 3 drops of rain or a hurricane is coming if you ask the locals they look at the sky and say "no, it won't rain, just a little wind, no big deal". He was referencing that laid back attitude.

I know this because as his wife I have been with him every time this was said.

Of course since I have been posting here for the last century on my lunch break my amazingly ridiculous lack of a life may scare you. No worries. We both have a very good life!

Sorry about all this. For sure I meant nothing of the sort. Tambien, encantado.

So now we play nice. Works for me. If we ever went on a dive trip, you wouldn't, by any chance, consider putting anything "funny" in that tank, now would you?

Trust me Christi, I wouldn't last 3 minutes with a jerk or a hater or a disrespectful idiot. Or I should say he wouldn't last with me....... So glad you all are communicating better now.

Haha! No, I promise! In fact, I may even give you a Loco Gringo introduction discount offer! Haha!

I see by your lovely wife Crunch's trip report that you really do know how to enjoy the island! You stayed in a great place, ate at my favorite places, rented from my favorite car rental and neighbor Margarita (total doll), and visited all of the places I adore on the island! Please DO let me know next time you're here and I would LOVE to have dinner and/or refreshing adult beverages with you both :)

I am trying to get an avatar picure up, but no matter how teeny tiny I make it, I still get the "file too large" error - it's within the parameters given - any tips on that?

Update on the Coz turtles...I can't give one :( The Federales have the east side of the island closed off - I have no idea why, but I can't get over there. I am trying to find some information but haven't been successful thus far!

The trick is to use this avatar sizer:

http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/

I think I set it at 145, but if that ends up being too small you can up it. And then don't forget to hit "apply" after you put it in your profile.....

THANK YOU Crunch! That is a cool little tool, never knew about it! I hope it worked! this was my favorite sunrise picture when I was in Akumal - the morning after a horrid night of torrential rain and wind back in May!

I don't get it - it's not working :( File uploaded successfully, I hit apply - and then I went back and did it again. Still no profile pic :(

Y'all are just pure evil. I mean, you know that right?

I was just breaking open a fresh box of live, furry little bunnies I found munching in the front yard this morning for all of us to hold and there you had to go and do that.
