Read this in my morning headlines....

Feve will collaborate in the implementation of a new metropolitan railway in Mexico, a tram train that will link different sites in the tourist hub of Riviera Maya. Located on the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula, that area receives the highest number of tourists in the whole Mexico and has the strongest population growth within the country.

To achieve this goal, a framework cooperation agreement was signed in order to study the viability of a train system linking the city of Cancun, on the north-east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, and Tulum, about 120 km south along the coast line.

The collaboration agreement covers strategic development, operational management, personnel training and technical assistance aimed at optimizing train service in the area. The deal also involves the sale of equipment and technology transfers deemed appropriate by both institutions.

The tourist corridor on which the line would operate comprises the municipalities of Cozumel, Solidaridad, Benito Juárez, Isla Mujeres and Tulum. In this area the new railway would play a key strategic role in the transportation of both residents and visitors.

Yes, read about this, looks great, especially since the airport is now not on the drawing board at this time. This seems like the real deal.

That could be fantastic! I'd love to see the vehicle volume reduced on 307.

One little chuckle... they've included Cozumel and Isla on the list... hmmm, a rail/tram service you can take to/from Cancun

I love this idea.  Hope it moves forward quickly.  I'm sure the construction alone would bring more jobs to the area, and the completed railway would continue to provide jobs.  It would, however, impact some of the transportation companies that rely on tourists booking their services to go from place to place, like from Cancun to Tulum.

Would rather see this then an airport in Tulum!! Would significantly cut down on air pollution from all the vehicles on the 307.

I agree on creating more jobs. But, then I would assume some of the taxi & collectivo riders would hop on the tram.

There are going to be some VERY angry cab mobsters protesting this one!!! I bet the transfer services won't be happy either.

Any expansion south, anything that makes southerly destinations more accessible makes me sad. Anything that makes Tulum more attractive to the casual Mexico tourist makes me sad.

I feel pretty much like Doug.  Not that we'll influence this much in any case...
I think it will be a looong study.

I have mixed feelings about this and have not made up my mind yet.

One thing, it is gonna cost a lot of money, land down there is expensive, even west of the highway, people are starting to build there also (example, GBP Sian Kaan) and not sure how their economy is going these days, lots of stalled projects. Also does Mexico have eminent domain like California does when we build a new freeway?

Wonder if they would consider building a few water/waste water facilities?

Since I began my Mayan adventure I have slowly been migrating south as the forces of developement advance. Some time down the road I can see myself on the beach in Xcalack, treasuring the memories of what once was

All things change. So book now, book as often as you can,

I would still want to use some form of private transportation from the airport to avoid allnthe stops along the way. Also wife & I really enjoy the adventures of using collectivos to get around. Doubt we would use a tram if it ever gets built.

I for one am not a bit fan of modernizing more of the area. I miss the older laid back feel that it once had 15 years ago when going to Tulum was a huge adventure because there was no 307 only a rickety bus on a gravel road. I may have to find a new/old place to hang my hat for vacation and this pains me as I love Akumal.

has its pro's and con's for sure

the Rome ring road was built around the city in 20 years (or less- my mind fails me at this time) and they... are Italian.. that being said, the airport plan got kyboshed for Tulum..
would be interesting to see if this train tram thingy really happens

Too much access to remote areas, makes our little escape pod from the world ...a possible Cancun explosion

I feel the area's ecology in general is already unsustainable with the current level of tourism. I would prefer to see them use the money to create a huge desalinization plant, so they can preserve the cenotes.
