We have stayed at GBP 3 times, the last being about 3 years ago when it was clear standards weren't as they used to be. We are looking to go back to RM this year and having read the "what's your favourite?" thread, was intrigued to see GBP mentioned only in the negative however Trip Advisor still retains it as a very highly ranked hotel. Can anyone who has been recently confirm whether they've pulled their socks up and got the hotel back on track, or whether we should look elsewhere? Many thanks Oops seems I doubled up here! Computer threw a wobbler while I was typing so I thought I'd lost the message. Sorry to be repetitive :o)

If you were there three years ago and thought "standards weren't was they used to be", you may want to try elsewhere. We also thought they had gone downhill (after 12 trips there), so we went looking at other places and are very glad we did. I have noticed that people that make a "connection" with certain staff members and get somewhat preferential treatment at the GBP generally tend to be happier returning there than those that don't have those connections. Even with our somewhat "shaky" VIP status, we were unhappy with the staff turnover in the Akumal section, and the trend the GBP was taking in booking large, uncontrolled parties.... Lots of drunken behaviors that turned us off completely, and shoddy cleaning of the public areas were the last straw for us. There are so many good resorts out there, I would advise you to try another resort - but either way, enjoy your vacation!

I just posted a trip report on the GBP Tulum. I have been to the Barcelo Maya Tropical/Colonial 9 times. Recently went to the Bahia with 8 others that really had nothing to compare it too. We all had a wonderful time. I can see why many do not like the dolphin pool, but no one in our group let that spoil our vacation. Going into the trip I let everyone know the beach was not be best in the area, but its not the worst either. I really thought the food and service was very good. Good luck on your decision, its so hard to recommend or take people with you because of the worry something goes wrong. Its a beautiful resort.

Personally, I would not take into consideration the operation of a dolphin, at least, not at first. Many places have dolphin pools, Xel-ha, Xcaret, Puerto Adventurus, the park on Cozumel. You could well miss out on something you were expecting, and hoping to provide for your friends. That being said, if it came down to all things being equal between two resorts (price, amenities, beach, atmosphere, etc....) at that point, I'd throw that in as deal breaker. How do your friends feel about dolphin pools? You may find things at the various resorts you look at that will have much more impact on you and maybe even your health. For example, one place I went to had zero no smoking rooms. They'd walk in, hang a sign and none of the maids would smoke while you were booked in the room, but the smoky smell still hung around in the drapes and bedding. I had to sleep on the balcony and request a different room, which was only more tolerable. I'm suggesting that you zero in on what you want primarily, then work your way down. Set the priorities. You can completely ignore the dolphin are as a mild protest, maybe state your objections to management (or not). Or do as others and completely not give them your money at all. But I would prioritize based upon what you and your friends want. It's your money and your vacation.

Hubby and I stayed at GBP Tulum May 2011, thought the resort was beautiful, grounds were well kept, the food was good not gourmet but good, our room was beautiful clean maybe a little dated but it had a beautiful ocean view, as well as a view of the snack bar, we missed seeing animals like the Iberostar Paraiso had, But overall I woould stay there again
