We are hitting the San Francisco inTulum Wednesday night to stock the condo with groceries. Can anyone name some Mexican biodegradable sunscreen brands so we do not have to decipher the labels?

I hope this info will be of some help. We use Mexitan even though it looks like we have smeared some cottage cheese on our bodies. I also use a long sleeved rash guard and baggie shorts while snorkeling.

You can order Mexitan products for Amazon.com or directly from Mexitan. I don't know where you can buy it in Quintana Roo.

You already know why sunscreen is an issue, but, for those who don't, click here.

This link has some info on a sunscreen test some snorkelers did after realizing their favorite sunscreens were not reef friendly.

See you soon in beautiful Half Moon Bay!

Thanks for the info Annie. Unfortunately I thought of this too late to get an Amazon order delivered. Guess we will have to try to find some when we get there.

Hasta pronto!

Mexitan is from Florida, always has been. The original owner based her original formulas on a suntan oil a local woman made and sold on the beach in Acapulco. That's the Mexican connection to the name, but that's it, just a name. It's not a Mexican brand.

Treebeard, why don't you check out Organicamente? They're in Puerto Aventuras and sell Mexican made, organic and environmentally friendly products. I believe they do have sunscreens and other skincare products too. There used to be some sold at a store on the Ukana in Akumal too, but I don't remember the name of the store.

At the grocery or drug stores, you'll find Hawaiian Tropic biodegrdable, and I've found other mass-market biodegradable brands too. It's clearly marked on the labels.

I checked the ingredients for this product a while ago

Not reef friendly as it contains chenmical blockers (not good for you or the reef)

You want mineral blockers

I've been using natural, biodegradable stuff since before it became the "in thing" to do. I've never used it, but we don't have it in the US. I've never read the bottle in Mexico because I alway come with my own.

Honestly, I tend to not bother with any kind of sunscreen when I'm in the water. Most of my water time is diving so it would be a waste of effort anyway. If I'm swimming or snorkeling I also skip it. (and rash guards are pretty useless to me... if I get burned, it's going to be behind my knees and the backs of my legs...) Even the bio stuff doesn't really stay on that well in the water so it's not worth the effort. I dry off and apply when I get out, if I plan to be sitting out in the sun, which I usually don't do anyway. I'm in the water then out of the sun. I'm not someone who sits out baking all day for for hours.

If someone needs to have sunscreen and a drugstore brand, biodegradable or not, is all they can find, use it. I'd always places someone's long term health above all else when it comes to doing what you need to do to protect yourself... and having had more than one person I know die from melanoma that metastasized to their brains and other organs, if you burn easily or will be spending the day in the sun, take care of yourself. Cover up or use a sunscreen, even if it's not a biodegradable one.

We are using USA transfers to get to Akumal and having a rental car delivered to our condo. Thanks for the tip!

I peel my wetsuit down to my waist during the SI and lather up with sunscreen on my back and shoulders. I do not put it around my eyes are forehead anymore. I learned the hard way last year what happens when it gets into your eyes when you are diving.

I take my wetsuit off and put a t-shirt on. I hate the mess of having the sunscreen mucking up on the inside of my suit. I'm just not a big sun lover... I burn too easy... I'll be the person with the hat & tshirt on under the palapa.

The large grocery store in Akumal carries the biodegradable sunscreen for about $15 for a reasonable amount.
